The Summit Expression Session 2004 was definitely our biggest and best yet! Not only did we have a great turnout, but the weather was definitely agreeable. We had manufacturers come from Switzerland, Colorado, and Boston to show off their goods. We even had some Olympic riders that came out to spend some time with us – thanks to Lisa Kosglow, Tyler Jewel, and Jeff Greenwood for showing their faces at our dinner. The event was a fantastic get together of people from all over the world, and all types of riders.
The event started in Aspen Valley. The first day we all rode at Snowmass, and there was not a dull moment. It was very nice in the morning, and then clouded up and dumped buckets of snow on us for the groomers to spread. Perfect timing! The next day was at Buttermilk, and it could not have been more perfect if we would have planned it. Warm, sunny, and ideal conditions. We ruled the hill, and almost every chair going up had a carver or two. This is the day we took the group photo you see above – need I say more?
Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, then came day 3. We all woke up to a blue sky that was photo perfect. It was warm and the snow was so perfect it made us all giggle like school kids. Some people went to Aspen Mountain (Ajax) for carving on the steeps. Others stayed at Buttermilk for a “Women’s photo shoot” with all the girls not wearing skirts showing their stuff for the camera. If you were not smiling that day, you were not with any of us. We globed on the sunscreen and ripped down as fast as possible to the lift so we could do it all again. There were lots of red smiling faces on tap the next day.
This year we tried something new, and that was having a day off from scheduled riding during the week. It gave everyone a chance to relax, get boots fitted, or ride, depending on how you felt and what your schedule was like. We opened Bomber’s doors for things like boot fitting, purchasing new toys, and just stopping by for a quick hello. The party that night featured the ever-growing One and Only Carve Museum at the Bomber Empire, and a few adult beverages. Tim Mullen was here from Reliable Racing to educate us all with a Tuning Clinic. Well worth the time!
The next day we were back at it at Beaver Creek. Optimal conditions, fantastic snow, and then a new Carve King: Dave Keys. Pushing his helmet so far in the snow that he was coming up with a face full, he won at a scary height of 11.5 inches. WOW! With cow bells a ringin’, another day worthy of a smile.
Arapahoe Basin was a surprise. We arrived to a cold morning at the base of about 11,000 ft and great job of grooming. Their groomers did a fantastic job of making the snow very Carve Friendly for all of us! Sean Cassidy and Mark Harris were out from Snowperformance and graciously gave riding clinics for free! All abilities were covered. These guys deserve a bit FAT thank you!
We called it early, about 2pm, to have time to get ready for Night Carving at Keystone. Night carving is always a hit, and this year there were no regrets. Everything definitely takes on a new perspective under the lights! Later we partook in food and adult beverages at the local brew pub.
Last day – Copper Mountain. What a mountain to end up at! Bomber worked it out so we were all on the chair at 8:45, 15 minutes before the lifts opened to the public. This allowed us to lay some pretty good trenches under the lift while everyone else was drooling. Great weather, great conditions, and a really good end to the event.
The end of the week banquet was not a disappointment. Not only did Bomber give away lots of smaller items, like boot bags, board bags, and t-shirts, but Dominator gave away wax, Jytte gave away a ton of hats, Catek and Bomber gave away bindings, and Prior and Donek both gave away boards. We watched videos that were taken during the week, and also one that Jeff Greenwood made on his experience at the Olympics. Everyone got to mingle and brag about turns they made, and injuries sustained.
The DVD featuring the SES and the ECES will be coming soon from Bob Jenney. We will have it available on the web site as soon as possible. Cool T-shirts are on sale here from the SES event.
Another great SES, fantastic people and new friends, another great year. See you next year!
