    Moist--Word of the day.

As I am sitting here in Eugene, Oregon listening to NOAA talk about the previous and expected weather for the area and heard them use "Moist" no less than 10 times.

So the word of the day---"Moist"

    Enjoy

Come on Ais - this has nothing to do with relationships and girls vs boys. What gives? I expected more since now you are no longer considered single

Go west to a ski area for the next six months. Leave windows open slightly.
When you return all will be better.

Actually that is the "new home" smell that is so coveted in some places.

Ok, don't how to get the smell out really but I do know there are water based ( no VOCs as solvent) floor finishes that are awesome. They had to do the floors at the last rental we were in. Bad, bad plumbing flaw from remodel caused leakage.

The finish they put on was incredibly tough. The smell, and not much of that, was gone in a couple of days. I know you can't redo it, but something for others to think about if getting floors redone.

You might be able to run some high volume fans out the window to move the VOCs to the outside. Good luck.

i can't imagine anyone would want a place to smell like that constantly...

well i took the easy way out... i was having a maid service come in to do the windows and vaccuum/clean all the dust from the floors being sanded off of everything ( i have severe allergies to dust and cat dander and the previous occupant owns 2 cats) so i had them do a quickie wipe of the floors and it smells much better in there now!

painting walls next! then yankee candles LOL

    let the painting begiN!

ok so a friend came over to help me tonight or I would never have gotten so much done...

    all rooms: holes spackled over

kitchen: a lovely new shade of sunlight yellow... done! 2 coats!
it had been a disgusting puke green... eww...

bathroom: one coat done! had been a weird pale lavender.. now a pretty mint green

    master bedroom: cornered...

thursday i plan on getting bathroom second coated and master bedroom (hopefully) double coated... though it depends on how much help i get. my bedroom set is being delivered saturday..

the dining room, living room and front hall will come next...

the spare bedroom/aka computer room will be the last thing done so its being left alone atm... it will need a LOT Of work. the ceiling paint is completely falling off... and there is this horrible wallpaper that needs to come down.

i feel like i'm all growns up.

    LOL
oh... did i mention i have a full time job now!? i AM all growns up! hahaha

We sold our old house on the weekend, so I have the financial capacity for some DIY to the new place now too. Not that it needs too much, but just a few tweaks here and there will make it about perfect.

Oh yeah, and DIY is cool fun, so any excuse....

i just had hard wood floors put in my downstairs - all bedrooms and hallway. I also ripped out the vanity in one bathroom and tiled the floor and wall, will put in new vanity soon.

Then I started with the painting - bathroom, bedroom, hallway. I've got one more bathroom to go, and the rest will wait until next year. I'm over it!

    Smile 10th Anniversary!

How about a tale of true love, for a change?

Today is the 10th anniversary of the day Rabbit the wonder dog & I first met. I was headed to recycling, and a friend had some blankets she wanted me to drop off at the animal shelter since it's right next door. To get into the building, I had to walk right by the dog cages. Full beyond capacity, there were 25 dogs jumping up and down and barking at the top of their lungs "ME! ME!!! Take me! I'm a good dog!" And there was one dog standing, completey silent, staring at me with tractor beam eyes and the clear message that I was there only for her.... We stared intently at each other for awhile (Minutes? Years? I couldn't tell you.) then she turned her back and leaned against the wire fence so I could stick my fingers through to pet her.

Upon inquiry, I found out that the dog who had chosen me was about 8 months old, from a litter of pups abandoned in Idaho, and had since been through 3 families and was considered untrainable. Perfect. I was very broke, living in my truck while trying to build my house and in very poor health (having just been diagnosed with celiac disease 3 days earlier) and had NO business having any dog, let alone a high maintenance one. I left without her.

But I couldn't get her out of my mind and she haunted my dreams. So 2 days later, at 5 minutes before the office closed, I got her out of the pound and took her home. Seemed odd though - this untrainable dog was acting almost lethargic. Then she started vomiting. But at the shelter they had said she was nervous that sometimes caused her to vomit. OK...

By morning she was vomiting constantly and was too weak to stand. I carried her into a vet's office the minute they opened and they diagnosed her with Parvo virus - a disease that destroys the lining of the entire digestive tract. They plumped her up with IV fluids and antibiotics to stave off secondary infections, then sent her home with me. The vet said he thought I could take better care of her at home - though later he confessed that he thought she had only hours to live, and it's hard on his staff to have an animal die on their watch - so he sent her home with me to die. I was to give her a 1/4 cup water every 15 minutes, but she was too weak to lift her head, so I held her head up and squeezed water into her mouth by the dropper-full all night. The vet was astonished when I was back with a still (barely) living dog first thing the next morning for more IV's....

We went on like that for days, and I got no sleep at all for the first 2 weeks she was with me. I hadn't had a dog for 18 years, and less than 24 hours after coming home, Rabbit was racking up $600/day doggie ICU bills. Yikes! The shelter tried to get her back - she was the first to become ill in what turned out to be a Parvo epidemic that had them shut down and quarantined for over a month. They would have euthanized her with all the other infected dogs.

She required huge amounts of care at first, and then as her health improved she required enormous amounts of exercise - which apparently is what she had lacked in the homes that considered her "untrainable." Our first year together was hell, and I admit I tried many times to give her away, but no one would take her. It took a few years, but she finally got me trained up right, and we've had an absolutely awesome time together ever since. I have usually been able to take her to work with me, so we've spent nearly every minute together for the past 10 years..... and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

So here's to love at first sight, second chances, and life-long commitment!

    photos:

    1) Day 2 with parvo virus - a very, very sick pup.
    2) About a month later, Rabbit has settled in to her role as head construction dog.
    3) Happy Rabbit dog! This shot taken a couple summers ago.

    Happy Anniversary!

We also have a rescue doggie. I tend to think they make the best kind.
This is Duke, our white German Shepard. We think he was the runt of the litter, since he is so tiny for a Shepard. He has an insatiable appetite for tennis balls.

martyagt4, Duke looks like a very happy boy! Love the tall ears!

Michelle, yup - Rabbit had a rough start for sure. When I dug out that first photo I took of her (which at the time I thought might also be the last I would ever take) I teared up again too...

I feel lucky that I let her talk me into the whole deal. I did NOT go to the pound intending to get a dog that day! The only relationship I've been in that lasted longer was with a horse - 25 years. Still working on that crazy human relationship thing.... Four footed furry animals are just so much simpler.

How is your new work mate, Mathilda getting along? Updates? More photos? She sounds like such a sweet girl!

however i will soon be working graveyard shift and i don't have anyone to care for a doggie while i'm gone.. so no pups for this girl yet.

    thanks for the story!

She is a sweetie! She's doing great, bouncing around the shop finding her way. Fin wears a bell so she can find him, and when he's not around she hangs out in my office. Poor girl, things in the shop move around every 5 min so the box that was there last time around is not there any more, but has moved! She'll run right into you though, so you have to be careful and anticipate that she won't move out of the way like our other dogs. She's still working on going OUT the doggie door, although she can come in just fine.

She's adjusting well and the other dogs are pretty indifferent that she is around. It's quite the dog party here!

We solved a doggy mystery last week. Logan, our eight year old Alaskan, has never been interested in pulling anything. In fact that's how we got him. A guy at work was putting together a sledding team, but Logan, although a fast, high leaping athletic dog, did not like pulling any weight. Last week he started having a lot pain from a hind leg. Turns out he has hip displasia, and a little arthritis is starting to set in. Some anti inflammatory meds, and gentle walks, have him feeling a lot better. Guess what ever the quarter mix with the Husky is, was susceptible to hip problems.

My long ago ex boyfriend adopted out a husky that he got because she woudlnt' pull. the people that adopted her just wrote to me this morning because she is going into surgery for a knee injury. When they did the xrays, they found an old injury to her hip socket - looks like at one point it was dislodged and never healed properly. That's probably why she didn't want to pull!

so here's a weird little thing... not sure if i mentioned this before but apparently i am allergic to flea bath used on dogs? for the future if i do get a dog, i could just use something like frontline or a collar, not necessary for the bath unless they were infested right?
