I planned to ride Lovey yesterday and hang with the LCI, but my son and his co-pilot friend flew some folks in to Beaver Creek Friday and invited the wife and I over to ski/ride on Saturday. I thought we could swing back by Lovey on Sunday morning... little did I know...

The wife called it quits after lunch on SAT and retired to a base restaurant and as I can remember, I was having the BEST CARVING DAY OF MY LIFE, so I went back out with the boys for more.

The next part is per the boys, as they say I supposedly avoided an out-of-control skier getting a beginner lesson on a blue run? screaming as she squated over her skis straight-lining. They said I was locked on toe edge, looked up and saw the girl, tried to change directions, high-sided down the mountain, smacking the left, rear of my head (helmet), then flipping and coming to rest on my back. I don't remember. They scored it a solid 9.8... prior to impact.

I guess I was out for quite a few seconds before I could speak and I vaguely remember the ski instructor asking if I was OK and did I hit my head. I remember mumbling yes and asking for my son, who showed up with his friend a few seconds later. The boys said the instructor then skiied off with his student making some remark about how I shouldn't have been on the mountain on an old directional board, with ski boots (Donek FCI with Raichle 324's and TD3's), as they clipped me out of my step-ins. They helped me sit up and after a few minutes, I somehow rode down the mountain on beginner trails.

I barely remember walking in to the restaurant where my wife was waiting and we immediately went back to the hotel room, where she watched me closely, while I nursed a pounding headache for 2 days. We made it home last night and the headache has now gone, but the ears are still ringing, the memory is spotty and I'm bruised and bumped all over. Bottom line? I'm here to relate this story, thanks to my new helmet, my wife bought me over the summer. I haven't felt like inspecting it yet, but I know it must have taken quite a smack, so it will likely be replaced.

Hope to see all the LCI again soon!

    Angry Dusty, take Care

James, sorry to hear and hope you are back to 100% soon !

What a Stupid thing for an Instructor to say: "The boys said the instructor then skiied off with his student making some remark about how I shouldn't have been on the mountain on an old directional board, with ski boots" ......

I think I know the guy Tony is talking about. He says he runs the grinder and he seems to be pretty experienced.

However, I was looking at the board and the edges look to be near perfect factory grind so I may just leave them alone.

I'm a bit concerned about the board though. It is pretty narrow (19cm waist), a lot of camber (13 - 14mm) and pretty stiff. I don't know if I'm heavy enough or agressive enough to ride it. We'll see.

Dusty - sorry to hear about your accident. Two incidents of helmet wearing head injuries in quick succession. I don't like the trend. Heal well.

you should have reported him. He definitely should have called ski patrol and had them check you. That's a big no-no for ski instructors to do, leave the scene of an accident when someone is noticably hurt. And then to berate you on top of it? BAD BAD ski instructor.

James, I hope everything is ok with you. There's been a few head injuries here this year, so let's all be careful! I almost got hit at the Basin on Monday - they're out to get us!

Glad to hear you are alright James. Take it easy for a while before coming back.

Just looked at Lovey's camera. SCRUB has a b-e-a-utiful, dbl. wide strip of groom down it. And it is open.

    loveland sunday

crashed under 6 sunday -- worst fall in 750+ days of riding
in colorado. don't remember the fall, getting up, or twenty
    minutes afterward. not ideal.

many thanks to ice, jon, and mario for picking up the pieces.
many thanks to doctor scott for his expert advice via the phone.

    Ace,
Right on! Sounds like a good group coming together.

    PC,
Glad you are ok! Bigs told me about it on the phone as I didn't see you guys again. Heal up and see you on the hill soon. Like the mayor says "Every day is game day".

PC - sorry to hear about your crash. WAY too many head injuries lately. Any idea what your head hit (just the hard snow?). Heal fast and completely.

We left Loveland about 2:10PM. Traffic on I-70 was terrible. This pacing thing by the State Patrol isn't working:

    http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news...38/detail.html

Took us almost 2 hours to get to I-70/C470 with dry roads and clear skies. They said they suspended the pacing about 3:15 because the volume was too high - WTF?

Someone told me that attendance at the X-Games was a record. Maybe a lot of the eastbound traffic was people heading back to Denver from Aspen.

A lousy end to a fun day.

Though I don't know him I heard Ace and others are showing up tomorrow. Potentially a good session for the next few days before we head over to SES....Hit it!

I didn't get to ABasin yesterday due to the usual range of excuses: no pass, had to take the kids to school etc but I did get to Loveland. It was empty and very nice

    Angie,
Kevin is planning on the full week, Bigs will be there Sat, Sun and Fri. The Runes Ohana, Concussed, KarverKai and I, are trying for Thurs and Fri and banquet. Waiting to see if Kevin will have room for us or not. Need to get tickets as well. You got any deals that you know of?

    MattJ,
You missed out on a good one at the Basin. Ace, Snowman, DHong, Fathead, Jim, Greg and myself on a most perfect day at the basin. Similar to the pic you posted but with a group of hard chargers slaying the hill. Some vid and/or pics may surface as Ace was on camera duty for part of the day.
