Is It Ok To Post Ebay Auctions That Are Not Yours?

Just to make all of the whining stop, I thought I would listen to the majority.
If you vote against my opinion, I will never complain again on this subject. I only hope some others will do the same.

I believe that it is ok to post your own ebay auctions, and it is ok to post buy it now items that aren't yours, and it is especially good to post 20 year old beat to hell sticks with a $500 starting price...

I just don't think it is a good idea to post something like this:

oh, its in a grey area. if its obvious ploy (advertising), no it isn't ok. if its actually geninue reference for a person to go to ebay to check out a board, allright, maybe.

Yeah, I think the rules cover this pretty well, although not explicitly. If it's an ebay auction for used gear, then all's well, imo.

However if a link is posted that goes to an ebay *search*, like for a particular seller or whatever, and the search results include new gear, the link will be pulled unless the poster gets permission from Fin.

I think people are missing Tex's point - he's not worried about violating the rules of this board with respect to spam or new equipment sales, he's concerned about drawing attention to an auction that he might have a chance of winning cheaply. It's fine by me.

my point is that we all know how ebay works. if you see a good deal, I guarantee at least 10 other people here have seen it as well. if you post an auction that is not yours and you have no interest in, all you are doing is screwing the guys who were watching it and hoping to keep it quiet. you think you are helping? look at the "users online" at the bottom of the welcome screen...there are always more lurkers than members looking, so you are more than likely pointing out something to someone that has never contributed a damn thing to this community. You see a deal? great - PM your buddies who need boards...don't post it up to the world.

ok so tex, while your point is valid (sorta) you stated that you would accept the majority opinion which is overhwhelmingly against you.

unless Fin says then you will stick to your promise of not complaining about it, right?

FYI Gang. Ebay launched a cool new offering of sorts today. Its called eBay To Go Just go to that site, enter the auction number you want, and a live link gets embedded in the thread. Now if Bomber just figures out how to make that a link that drives a referral fee, maybe they'll have a new revenue stream.

Here's an example to a current auction. In a week, this should turn into some sort of link to a search for vintage snurfers on ebay (that's the option I chose). In the meantime, the default link that came up on eBay seems to work just fine.

    Cool, eh?

Oh, and I think its fine to link to auctions that aren't yours. Perhaps better than pimping your own. It does bum me out when someone links to something I plan to snipe, but so be it.

I don't go to Ebay Often, but when I do it is because of a link posted here. Still, not fair to the guys who do the research and put in the time to find a bargain, only to find someone else here posting for the lazy to come along and snipe.

Maybe we should start a new room in the classified section for ebay auctions...

    say and write whatever.

Say and write whatever you want, unhindered. That's how it should be. Keep it civil and abstain from the ole personal attack. Not that that should be a rule - just a suggestion.

My personal gripe is when forum members battle over an item, nad the price gets inflated beyond reality.

If I show interest in something... as in I NEED THIS BOARD... PLEASE DO NOT COUNTER BID ME..... and someone comes in at the last 2 seconds and snipes it without watching it since day 1... THAT irks the piss outa me.

But hey...... it's a free world, and thats all part of the game.

Linking to sites and deals or whatever that I normaly would never see is a great way to help others in the hobby. I don't look for the same items every week, but when they do come up I like to know of a special noteworthy item

yeah, kinda like this $600+ prior that sold for $100 and change.

so you're saying that...if you say "HEY, CHECK THIS EBAY AUCTION OUT! I WANT IT!" no one else is supposed to bid? If you covet something so much, why would you attract public attention to it? How do you know they dont "need" the board more than you? If they are willing to pay more, then doesnt this imply that they "need" the snowboard more than you? This basically says that you were expecting to pay too little. Also, how in the world would you know that they havent been watching it since day 1? Also, EVERYONE bids last two seconds. That is what software like linked above is for!

But hey...... it's a free world, and thats all part of the game.

So you're ok with someone pointing YOU in the direction of a "cheap" auction...that someone else may very well "need" (and be using the same exact argument you have attempted to use) that item?

I can't believe this discussion is still going on, but the fact of the matter is someone is always going to point out an auction. I won't anymore, Tex certainly won't () but even if the mods made it completely against forum rules (why in the world would they?) someone would still do it. It's an understandable, albeit selfish, argument, but a perfect exercise in futility.

D., one thing to keep in mind is that you're applying today's retail prices to yesteryear's boards. It's not valid. First of all, retail prices have come up over the past few years. Second of all, even if retail prices stay flat over the years on a specific brand, any recent advancements the manufacturers have made in terms of technology, materials, do devalue older boards without those advancements - even in new condition.

For example, I have a Donek Wide freeride board from back when they retailed for $280. Mine has a topsheet blem and I was offered the choice of that board with a discount - which I accepted - or a re-make. I forget exactly what the discount was but I think it was $75 - which would have made it a $205 board. If it were in new condition and I were to sell it today and claim it was a $450 board (today's retail price) I would be full of s**t.

yeah, and you've corrected me on that before. OF COURSE this particular board wasnt worth $600, $500 or even $200. It was "worth" $100 and change.

my point was...pointing it out didnt drive the price up!

    Bunk

The whole topic is Bunk If you are looking for a snowboard shop for it your self.

Everyone here knows how to use e-bay. I see refering stuff on this site as a bogus way to bring more people into the bidding thus bring the price up.

You can say it all about letting other riders know about gear but then again do we really need a "e-bay babysitter" looking out for who???

Everytime I hear about a alpine deck for sale should I run to Bomber and post about it???

Plus half of the crap on e-bay is just that crap. when some semi educated poster throws it up here it misleads new members into thinking its a decent product.

I really think you should let the classifed here do the selling.

let the ebayers have at it there not here.

Why take challenges from the past when we can go on and challenge us on what’s possible with the current technology?”
