It is with a sad heart we want to announce to the Carving Community the death of Meg VanSciver, our friend and the fiancée of Chris Webster. Meg died from a paragliding accident last Sunday in Golden, Colorado.

You can support Chris and Meg's family either through posting on her page HERE or by contacting Chris directly. Or just leave a kind note here on this thread. I am sure Chris will read it in time.

I always enjoyed talking to Meg as she was a mechanical engineer like myself, but was doing much more noble things with her skills. She worked for "Engineers without Boarders" and I would always ask her about that experience. Below is a great picture of her and Chris with their (and all ours) friend Kevin at the past 2013 Summit Expression Session in Aspen.

Chris, we are thinking of you and are thankful for the time we had to get to know Meg, a wonderful woman.

Hi to all. So after 15 years of softbooting I decided that it is time to get into another challenge and look for extra speed at 47 years young :D I purchased from this awesome place  a beautiful used Coiler AMT, a pair of F2 Intec and I found a pair of Head Stratos Pro used only 3 days. The Head have mounted the ACSS system. Now as I said I am just starting, so everything is new to me. But I have been reading about the many mods many are making on the HSP. Now lets get to my question. Since I am starting from scratch, do you suggest I hack my Heads to get more flex right away or should I start as they are now until I get some experience before mods? For a beginner, is the flexibility important i.e. is the limitation to the flex going to hinder my learning curve? thanks!

Firstly might have my terminology wrong in places so just bear with me (I dont know stuff)

I have been away for a few years ... kids are old enough to belt down the hill now so had a few days last year

I was on old technology anyway as boards in New Zealand hard to get ... have a Shine 162 & an Oxygen 164 proton (which I found recently)

Mostly Ruapehu (whakapapa)

Have started to think about up grading as my weight has changed (pie is good)

5'11" 94kg

I have bought last year UPZ M27-27.5 & F2 to replace the old boots that broke first day back & the old SnoPro bindings I was sh!t scared were going to break

My dilema

I am fat ... the Shine has heaps of mileage on it & wants to fold (that said havent tuned properly yet with the new boots & bindings ... would add the boots & bindings seem too much for this board anyway) .. the Proton is cool but goes straight down the hill & I am too fat for it i.e. I want more G's on a carve than flight down the hill

Dont know where to start on the new boards as things have changed so much & add I like the EC developments

I am looking for a board that can make a very extreme carve ... but something that also lets you carve the mileage ... is this the Variable I should be looking for? are the EC boards only good for one thing

I am happy going slow ... in fact would prefer something slower (my old planks no doubt are well slow in todays terms anyway) ... but want more extreme carves

Thoughts would be appreciated

Hello BOL,

I have a question in regards to switching to UPZ boots. Im an currently using size 27 Deeluxe track 700's, and I am buying UPZ's. A very reputable UPZ dealer in Boulder recommended that I buy size 26 UPZ's because they run big. Unfortunately he is out of the boot that I want until the fall, I wouldn't mind waiting until the fall, but I am going to Hood in a month and I would rather break the boots in at summer camp, rather than during the season. So I am buying them from UPZ online, but UPZ online is recommending that I buy 27's ??? Im being told by most people to buy a size smaller, but UPZ is advising i go bigger.

My Fred Flinstone foot measures 10-1/2" long and 4-1/4" wide.

YABADABADOOOO!!!!

Let me know.
Thanks!
Did anyone know about this yet?! I know Arnaud was experimenting with his ACSS on the UPZ RC10's but this is the first I've seen of a seemingly complete system. Curious about price and effectiveness compared to the stock spring mech. I find the stock one sufficient but perhaps this is night and day difference. Only thing is, is that it appears some drilling is required for the t-nut. Wonder if this could be converted back to stock. Either way, this is progress!

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately an MRI confirmed that I have a herniated disc at L5/S1. It is now causing me some sciatica. Not taking pain meds now, but it's gotten more frequent in the past 6 weeks. Saw 2 specialists (one neurosurgeon and one ortho who specializes in lumbar areas).

Both of them think that I'm a good candidate for a microdisectomy and that PT will not do the trick. I've been doing a ton of reading. I'm currently in PT at a back speciliazation place that has some highly trained people. I think this is my last resort before the operating table, unfortunately. Neither dr. was a fan of the epidural and the standard, run-of-the-mill PT places likely aren't going to fix this. The place now does dry needling and some other techniques, and they cured my dad's cervical issue.

Has anyone here had the microdiscectomy? I am very curious if you were able to return to snowboarding? I happen to think that carving, in particular, may have re-triggered this sciatica. It just seems to me that all the twisting and turning can be rough. Grnated, my technique isn't the greatest (I"m sure I'm guilty of upper body rotation and can have exagerrated motions), but I'm sorta worried that I may not be able to carve again....maybe I'll just have to be extra careful (hard when you're at speed).

All I know is that I have to do something about this b/c I wouldn't even consider riding a skateboard, running, snowboarding , or any other similar activity right now, with the pain and limited range of motion.

I've already done chiro, as I was initially misdiagnosed with an SI joint sprain. Not going back there.

If you've had this procedure or have an L5 disc hernia, please get in touch with me; very curious to hear how you ride.

BTW, I'm a 34 year male, in decent shape (though admittedly, have a weak core, which I will obviously have to work on, regardless of if I go through w/ surgery).

thanks,

Barry

In a late night sleep deprived stupor , while moving my front binding back to it's forward position (I had pulled it back to ride the 14 inches of POW we got Tues this week at Kirkwood!) I had a brain fart and rotated my front foot lift disk to match my rear foot (I usually ride the norm 3 degree toe lift on the front and 6 degree heel lift on the back)....

So fast forward to today, I get into the lift line and step in to my front foot binding and can imediately feel something is differant......I'm jacked up on my heel on the front foot!! Well I was already there towards the front of the lift, ready to load, so I figured I would ride it back down right to the lodge and save the walking back at that moment.

OK...so I get off the lift, click in the rear and take off.........first toe side just drops in like normal, but the first Heel side Was On a Rail!!! I never felt that locked in on my Heel sides! So I keep charging and my heel sides keep getting tighter and smaller!! OMG It's a huge differance and with no loss to my toe side.!
I stayed an extra 2 hours just cause it was so much fun hucking heelsides! Never would I have thought to try 3 degree heel lift on the front!

We only got one more weekend of lift service here at Alpine (Squaw is done tomorrow, the 21st) next week and it's over....but you nkow where I will be!!!

I should have more stupors!!:freak3:
