I've heard rumors that CO 82 west of Balltown (west off Hwy 24, south of Leadville) has closed down in previous years. This will add like four hours to my drive if it is closed. Do any of you locals know the status of CO 82 (between Hwy 24 and Aspen)?
Better yet, can you bump this post Mon-Tues the 13th/14th and let me know the status of the road so I can plan accordingly?
MUCH appreciated! :biggthump

Sorry dude,
That's Independance Pass. Definitely closed: til Memorial Day Weekend.
It's some great spring skiing/riding then, by the way.
Recalc time, but don't think it will add 4 hours, prob 2 at most.

Hey John,
CO 82 is always closed in the winter -- won't re-open until May sometime (Memorial Day?). You'll probably want to drive the way that we'll be going -- north to I-70, then west to Glenwood Springs, and then south to Aspen.
Alternatively, you could drive to Crested Butte and hike over Triangle Pass, that's probably 20-30 miles :)

BTW, here's the CDOT website with road conditions -- you might find it useful next time you come up:

Ack!
Oh well not much I can do about that. At least it's less then what I expected (2 hours vs 4 hours).
Tom-Thanks for the link. That will come in handy on the next Monarch Trip and my A-Basin trip later in the season...

From the intersection of 24 and 82 will take 2 hours and 45 minutes to Aspen with good driving conditions.
I live in Glenwood and drive that route a lot. To that intersection to Glenwood it's a solid 2 hours. Then Glenwood to the parking lot at Buttermilk is another 45 minutes..
In the summertime when the road is open it's 45 minutes to Aspen from that intersection....average pending....summer has brutal traffic on that road.
So the detour adds 2 hours to your time table.
