The Connecticut Ski Council has sponsored a series of state races (GS, SL, DH, XC) for skiers for several years and last year held their inaugural Snowboard Race at Mt. Southington. Only 13 racers showed up and the organizers have threatened to pull the plug this year if we don't get better numbers (like 50). They are going to use a preregistration to determine if there is enough interest. The format calls for a combined time for two runs but last year they modified it to the best of three runs.
Cost is $24 and that includes your lift ticket. Prizes? Not much. At the end of the season, each person who finished in the top three in an age group gets something like an engraved glass or travel mug. The fastest overall racer gets a small plaque. You earn points toward the overall state series if you're also a skier. You get bragging rights and a chance to become state champion.
It is open to any resident of Connecticut and kids are more than welcome. You do NOT have to be a member of the council's clubs. Registration opens at 6:00 p.m. The adult classifications are as follows:
Men: MA 18-26; MB 27-32; MC 33-35; MD 36 - 39; ME 40-41; MF 42-43; MG 44-45; MH 46-47; MI 48-50; MJ 51-55; MK 56-59; ML 60-63; MM 64-68; MN 69 & over.
Women: WA 18-29; WB 30-34; WC 35 - 39; WD 40-42; WE 43-47; WF 48-52; WG 53- 59; WH 60 & over
Please e-mail me (webmaster@mtlski.com) if you think you might be interested or have any questions. Additional info should be posted soon at the Council's website. (http://www.skiclub.com)

Pre-registration will not be required after all but they do need to know how many folks to expect. Deadline is the 18th. Again, they'll cancel the event if we don't get enough participants.
This is an opportunity to broaden the exposure of snowboard racing. I'd hate to see the event dropped for lack of interest.
All Connecticut residents - Please let me know that you can attend.

Pat,
Wish I could come, but I moved out of CT. Maybe I can find an old drivers license somewhere...
I'll tell my CT buddies about it.
I hope you get enough people and Good luck.

I asked and you responded! A number of you have said you can compete on the 25th. The race organizers are now optimistic we will have enough to hold the event.
Thanks!

I'm sorry to say that the CT Snowboard Race has been postponed until March 4th and will take place at Sugarbush in conjunction with the Connecticut Ski Council's annual Winter Carnival. If you're a Connecticut resident and interested in competing at Sugarbush please let me know.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I won't be able to make it March 4: I'll be at Panorama.

Good question. The Connecticut Ski Council holds a winter carnival called "On Snow" every year. It started over 20 years ago and was simply called "The Wine Race". Since then it has expanded as a three-day competition for the forty clubs in the Council. The Council sponsors a series of five state races during the year. The GS (postponed twice because of rain) and SL are held in CT and the DH and XC are held wherever the carnival is held. That location moves around but is always in VT. The state Snowboard Race was to have been held at Mt. Southington but we were struggling to get the minimum 50 people. My thanks to all of you who said they would race - you made up a significant number of those who did respond in the affirmative. The organizers made the decision to hold the state snowboard race in conjunction with the winter carnival at Sugarbush. As long as you are a CT resident, you are eligible to enter.

Hi Noah, I believe Sugarbush has them and I need to make sure they plan to use them. In the past, the snowboard race portion of On Snow has been held on the same course with a ski race (with ski-type gates). Thanks for reminding me.

no problem...If you need them...or any course setting expertise, let me know. I could arrange a loan (or rent), and could come up and lend a hand. I'm sure you could somehow make me an honorary CT resident for the day...

Wasn't sure I would be able to make it to CT.
I can definitely make it to Sugarbush.
You still planning on attending Pat?

Hi Scott,
I'll definitely be at Sugarbush.
Now I need to make sure they use snowboard panels. In the past the snowboard race at On Snow has been run on the same course as the Junior "A" GS course with Ski Race type gates. Since this year it's being combined with the State Snowboard Race I should be able to make a convincing argument for snowboard type gates.
I bought my plane ticket for Steamboat. Are you going?

Thanks, Noah. That's a generous offer. I'll see how they're equipped.

Hi Pat,
Still trying to figure that one out. New Job, new Home in VT...
I would like to, but I gotta lay some ground work on the job front.
Oh yeah, and we have to qualify too... but I hear they are making that one easier. Top 100 this year?

You betchum' Red Ryder! (Am I the only one old enough to remember that memorable line?) Anyone with a desire to go should have no problem qualifying. I need to qualify on skis too but I'm sitting in #1 Platinum at Okemo (for the moment).
I'm getting laid off at the end of April but ya gotta live for the moment. I've scheduled a "tuneup" on my right knee for April 25. The bone-on-bone is getting a bit annoying so they're going to grind it down a bit.....
