In all seriousness, we got first pitch in the Sox/Sox series about 2 hours away.... It'll be interesting to see what Contrares brings to the mound.

Come on Jack,

Warming up should be a good thing, not getting embarassed during game 1 of the playoffs. The Red Sox pitching got HAMMERED yesterday :barf: I agree anything is possible

ESPN sports: There are 14 teams in the American League. This season, Boston's bullpen ranked 14th in the league in ERA, 14th in OPS allowed, 12th in strikeouts per nine innings and 10th in strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Putting it mildly, this would seem to be something of a weakness

NY/LA should be a good series, maybe Sox on Sox...we will see. Whatever turns out in the AL, I'm a NL fan all the way :biggthump

--Hugh :AR15firin

Mike T
October 5th, 2005, 10:19 AM
Yep, the Sox pitching pretty much blows this year. But the starters have been very streaky - there have been times when, for a turn or two through the rotation, they've been dominant.

Also keep in mind that some of 'pen innings are from guys that are no longer on the team - Embree, Halama, etc. Papelbon has certainly been a huge improvement over those two. I would have put DiNardo on the roster over Gonzalez, but that's just me.

All I'm saying is, if they hit their stride after yesterday's embarrassment, they could put together a nice little streak. I'm not counting on it though.

Too keep this somewhat on-topic, since I moved to Oregon in 2000, when the WS is won by an AL team we get a crappy season and when the WS is won by a NL team we get a great season. Last year's awful season was ushered in by my lifelong favorite Red Sox winning it all. So part of my wants to see the NL team win it every year

Ouch!

Hmm, Buckner blowing game 6 of 7 (with a lot of help from management and hurler Bob Stanley), or being the first team in the recorded history of any modern team sport to blow a 3-0 lead.....

Oh well, we're still World Champs until someone wins it in a few weeks. May it please be the White Sox.

Actually I'm relieved. My month is shaping up to be hella busy, I'd be a zombie if I had to keep up with the playoffs. Yeah, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

:(

PS - I almost had to use the barf bag on a recent plane trip. I was flipping through the "Skymall" magazine, and it actually had a framed photograph that you can buy of Buckner's infamous mishap, autographed by the loser himself. :angryfire

I've had a hard time with baseball ever since the infamous strike of 94'. After that, I can't seem to get back that loving feeling.

I am in awe of the love :1luvu: that Red Sox fans have for their team, I frankly don't understand it. Cubs fans too :smashfrea

Maybe I'll actually see a playoff game before it is all over, but I doubt it. Following the strike of 94', I have been without TV. DVD's and videos on occassion, but no TV channels of any kind. The baseball strike of 94' was a total turnoff.

Bring on the snow :)

Just for reference, the NY Islanders came back from being down 3-0 (and they did force a Game 7 in the following series after falling down 3-0 again) in 1975. I also believe the maple Leafs did it as well... Boston was not the First team in Sports to do it, just in baseball....

i think we're only talking about baseball here  last year's upset of the yankees was the greatest upset in baseball history. no other team had done that. not sure if anyone was talking about any other sports?

Yeah, I was. I thought all the sportscasters last year were saying no team in modern team sports history. Did the Islanders go on to win that series?

Not the way they've started this year. However, they've had a great week 5. Maybe a sign of things to come? Doubtful. They just don't look as solid this year. In fact, they have looked very bad. Hopefully they turn it around though for all you New Englanders. ( And Billy Bordy even though I know that deep inside he's a Cleveland Fan. The whole Hardbooter crew was born in Ohio. ) There seems to be quite a few of you here and when you have 5 or 6 states backing a team, that's a solid fan base and a lot of electricity in the air for a team.

I'm just being nice. Phil is doing all the dirty work in this thread.... I'm very non-confrontational with the NFL due to the Browns' normal record.

ChiSox, no question. The rule is that you root for whoever beats your team to win it all. Then you can imagine that your team is second best, and if they only could have made it past that team (like if the ump hadn't made that make-up call on Damon to end the bases-loaded inning), then they could have won it all.

Well, if we had the Dodgers version of Manny Ramirez, we would have.

2008 on Dodgers:
53 games
0.396 avg
0.489 obp

2008 on Red Sox:
100 games

Somehow I suspect if Manny had stayed with the Sawks his Aug-Sept numbers would have been more like

40 games
.250 ba
.325 obp
5 HR
15 RBI

He's clearly someone who lets off-the-field issues affect his performance.

I'm actually quite proud of the Sox for getting as far as they did with Lowell out, Beckett obviously hurting, Ortiz obviously hurting, Drew not 100% (Remember he did carry the team for a month this season) and Timlin on the roster for that matter. (If there's one thing I'm pissed about that's it to be honest... he had as much business being on that roster as Eric Gagme did last year)

But losing to the Rays still stings. I'm actually rooting for the Rays to beat the Phillies in less than 7 games so I can take solace in the Red Sox hanging in there longer :P
