in my quest to find a replacement for the 2 weight rod I crushed I went to the redington website and saw the two most unexpected faces ever for a fishing pole vendor

That's too funny! :D I've eyeballed Redington rods in the stores before, and they struck me as just what they claim---a nice compromise between performance and budget. (In other words, I'd buy one!)
Here's a "budget hint" for reels--- I've been flyfishing for 15 years, and though I own a high-end Orvis CFO reel for my 3-weight, I've fished my 6-weight and 8-weight rods exclusively with $30 Pflueger Medalist reels (the kind you can palm drag, which I think they still make). Those reels are bombproof, and in my opinion completely blow the $300 reels out of the water.
I've dropped those Medalists, stepped on 'em, immersed them in both fresh and saltwater...and they just keep going.
I also recently found some excellent Shakespeare reels for $15 at Wal-Mart. They also are palm-drag reels, built from aluminum, extremely simple and (therefore) tough. I suspect they will last a long time too!
Alas, it's tough to find $50 rods that don't cast like a wet noodle (way slow action, which I dislike)...so I usually invest the $$$ for an Orvis rod.

are cheap and really good, their rods are good except the crosswater series they are really "dead"
I have a couple pfluger medalists I think they are about 20 years older than me and have seen much use and probably will last forever
