Yes, I'll update both sites as the details are ironed out.

This discussion started-up in the "Kicking Horse AM or Carve" thread I've got going, so I'm bringing it over here.

Rice,

Any chance of going somewhere on Sunday to do either some AM riding, or at least a different set of groomers for those who can't get their freak on off piste, would be nice way to finish off NES this year. Sunshine, Louise, and Castle were all forwarded in that other thread. I know you consisdered this last year but all the other mountains had some events on.

Corey,

What do you mean no AM board? That 182 NSR has got to be just awesome in tight trees. ;)

Dave

November 7th, 2011, 01:09 PM
The NSR? It'll stay in the board bag if there's fresh, I can barely bend it on firm snow! Speaking of which, I've got to go do some more squats... ;)

Come to think of it, my 167 VSR is technically an AM board. It was infinitely more fun than the 182 Monster in the powder bumps of 2011's NES. Meh, I'm still more interested in groomers.

Forget the squats, it's way easier to just up your cinnamon roll intake.:)

I'm up for that. A couple years ago we did Sunshine on Sunday and that worked out pretty well. We can do that again! So, the tentative plan would be Friday/Saturday at Nakiska then Sunday at Sunshine.

November 7th, 2011, 07:43 PM
From the Kicking Horse thread:

What about of we made the Saturday freeride day? So we did Nakiska Friday, wherever else Sat, and back to Nakiska on Sunday?

That sounds fun too. I'm up for anything. We should probably just watch the forecast and adjust on the fly. I did cause more board damage on one day at Sunshine than multiple years of crappy Manitoba snow. :( Wasn't a big fan of that, and traverses suck.

Allee
November 8th, 2011, 10:02 AM
I'm kind of over Sunshine right now. I'd prefer Louise, if the snow's good. There's more terrain there, and the carving on the front is rather good if conditions are right.

I'm all for making the decision last minute. It's all within an easy drive anyway.

ti_knee
November 9th, 2011, 08:33 AM
Louise would be my preference over Sunshine, especially with all of the crap around the patrol last year. Snow conditions will dictate though!

I have a massive ski box this year, so 3 seats for carpooling and lots of space for gear.

Neil Gendzwill
November 10th, 2011, 11:28 AM
I love Louise but I agree - let the conditions dictate. The reason we didn't switch hills last year was that conditions were amazing at Nakiska and not so good elsewhere.

There's a run at Kimberley that's much the same. Except that one has a trick stream in the middle of it, that you crash through if the ice is thin. That was a nice touch, I thought.

That's a killer pic of Paradise, though!

Haha, I'd dig out a trailmap if I saw that on the ride up. There's GOT to be another way down! :barf:If you want to get back to the bottom of Paradise lift, it's either the bumps or some hiking and then double-diamond trees IIRC. No easy way down. You can flip over to the front side from there, though, and there's nice groomers all the way.

The locals used to call it "Comedy Bowl" because it looks easier from the lift than it is, so there is always comedy to be had on the lift ride up. Not sure if that nickname is still current.

Corey, where are you staying this year? My sister moved to Calgary this year so I'm crashing at her place. It's near the corner of 85th St and Bow Trail SW, not sure that's convenient for anybody to sponge a ride off, so trying to sort out my options for getting to the hill. Maybe cab to where you are and then hitch with you?

Riceball
January 1st, 2012, 05:26 AM
Only 2 weeks away! I just hope we get a dusting of snow to ease up on the hard-packed conditions we are experiencing right now.

Have run into a lot of new carvers over the past couple of weeks and have been spreading the news about NES. Hopefully we'll get another good turn-out again this year.

There will be a few newbies at the session, so the group may be split between those who want to rip and those who want to learn.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and getting some good photos. Everyone is welcome back to the Recsky house for Pizza and Beer on Saturday night. There might even be a few of us that hook up for dinner on Friday night too.

Here is the schedule for the weekend starting Friday, January 13th:

Friday - Nakiska - 9am meet and greet, 11:30am lunch upstairs lounge
Friday Evening - Dinner out?
Saturday - Nakska - 9am meet and greet, 11:30am lunch upstairs lounge
Saturday Evening - Beer and Pizza at the Recsky's (78 Springbank Cres. SW)
Sunday - Location pending

Can't wait to ride!!!

Given that a half-day at the semi-local pimple is all the snow time I've had since last year's NES, I am pumped to be there but will in no way serve as a good example for the beginners - unless upside down in a tree is their carving goal!

Nakiska has been holding up pretty well during this warm spell and they have had 20cm of snow in the past 7 days. I just hope it doesn't get too much warmer as we approach the event weekend...

There was plenty of white stuff in Lake Louise this weekend (cold too ...) and Sunshine is having a great season so far - Wild West is open, and I don't think that was open at all last season. Forecast for Banff this week is for snow on Wednesday and Friday.

I haven't been to Nakiska since Xmas Eve. I should imagine it got pummelled with all the holiday crowds ... let's see what next week brings. The K Country forecast for this week is snow "maybe" on Friday.

I was at Nakiska today. Weird conditions..... (or maybe it was me riding a new board with a new BBP....) Upper hill, steeper pitch off Silver awsome snow, killed it (after 5 runs figuring it all out)

I said I wanted to ride the steep pitch under Silver as a goal this year and decided to give it a rip, it was too soft, plowed out on every other turn but I rode it. F yeah.

At the bottom under silver chair I generally rail that pitch, I didnt clean it once... It was super firm.

This is Kurt's pal Bruce. I had to back out of our Whitefish trip cuz of work and life so I will definitely be at NES this year after a 2 year absence. Shouldn't be -20 and hopefully conditions hang in there. My second pick would be Louise for what it's worth.

N

Just got back from 1/2 a day at Nakiska today. From the last pitch under Silver and up was great snow. Generally, it got a bit deeper the higher you went up. Red Crow on Gold was fantastic although it appears they didn't groom it so I had to be careful not to stuff the nose in to deep. North Axe on the front was definitely bullet-proof near the bottom. It wasn't Kurt's imagination. I hear there was some rain on the lower sections this past week. That would explain a lot. I saw Alex and Jeff today riding and ran into Chris in the lodge. The way the snow is setting up now, next weekend should be perfect.

I agree. Come out next weekend, let some people point you in the right direction, and give it a decent shot before you call it. This isn't an easy sport to learn by yourself, and the conditions at the moment are better for landing yourself in the ER than learning to snowboard.

Seems a shame to buy all that nice gear and take a loss on it.

The Tuesday snowfall topped out at 27cm. It's cold out today, with a high of +1 tomorrow. The new snow should be groomed in and set up beautifully for Friday - when the forecast is for a high of +3 and bluebird.

Looks like I might not get frostbite this year, huzzah!

Nick - I might grab a ride Sat - I think I'll be picking Steve S up on Friday. I can meet you at the Petro-Can if that works.

January 11th, 2012, 09:04 AM
Does park pass roulette work ? Between Christmas and Newyear i did park pass every other day. I thought all Calgary Rednecks didn't like taxes. Having to pay $20 ever day to drive on a park road to get to a private resort seems like the worst kind of tax , considering that car load was bringing in a mininum of $350 worth of business. Nice to hear you have a dump of snow sorry we missed it.

Allee
January 11th, 2012, 10:01 AM
Meh. Park passes can be pricey (I get a family one so I can have other people in the car, $140 a year) but I figure the parks people do a great job, and I'll do my bit to help. Plus I use mine in the summer as well, when I camp in Banff and Waterton and go mountain biking. At Waterton you can activate the gate after hours if you have a pass - otherwise you have to make sure you're in for the night by 10pm ...

And from the good to know file - if you have an accident in the park and have to be airlifted, or if you get lost and they call out SAR - if you have a parks pass, it's paid for. if you don't, you're on your own. I didn't know that until last year.

You can play roulette, sure, and lots of people do. It's a $250 fine if you get busted, and it gets attached to your vehicle registration. They have stings on the Sunshine road three or four times a winter ... just so you know.:eplus2:

Leave late enough to have to park on sunshine access road your asking for trouble, surprised more aren't hurt on that road. Riding inbound at sunshine with daily lifts for 5 ouch to the wallet. Hop on the road 10 squirts of the washer fluid and your there, from the # of km to sunshine thats a pretty expensive toll. The truith is for locals it's a great deal to a visitor not so much. When your not taking in anything the park has to offer like you would in the summer it's really just a tax. Damn nice riding when you get there i'm just jealous. I was wondering how may of those park passes are actually Wall Mart reciepts tape to the windshield.

Allee
January 11th, 2012, 10:59 AM
The Valley Ridge carpool is the one by the recycle bins, by the Pavilion there? I know where that is, but the Petro-Can works better because I'm way in the south. It's easier for me to take Glenmore to Hwy 8, otherwise I have to take Glenmore/Sarcee to 16th, through all the LRT construction, and it's a PITA.

I'm good for Friday as I'll be riding with Steve S - let's talk about Saturday then.

Weather watch ...

Friday still looks good, sunny and warm.

Saturday looks good, some cloud cover and a little cooler.

Sunday is supposed to snow, and the temperature is forecast to drop like a stone.

Is there anyone who wants to ride in Banff on Saturday instead of Sunday? If the weather is going to turn to crap, I don't want to be driving back from Banff in a snowstorm, especially when people have planes to catch. I can handle going as far as Nakiska on Sunday, but the road between Sunshine and LL is rotten when it snows.

Throwing it out there ...

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get up to to the mountain today, especially to meet Barry who was interested in my Cateks - sorry!!

I have posted some pics of my equipment in case there was any more interest.

Probably too late for you to read this but we're heading to the Lake. Just waiting for Steve to pick me up. Yesterday was fun, but the place was a zoo. Friday was much better. So good to see you all again!

Steve you organize a great get together. Its fantastic to see the amount of skill in the entire Calgary crew. I had a great time and its the first time Les and my two daughters also attended. I actually felt like I could sort of hold my own this year. Stuff I couldn't carve on last year I was able to ride this year and feel the energy coming back from my board.

Olivia (10) had her first day on hardboots on Saturday and is now dying for me to put them on the little FP 3.5 I have in my garage for her. Zoe (7) loved riding and hanging out with "the Carvers". Both girls had fun at the apres party at Steve's and seeing pictures of themselves riding.

Sorry I couldn't hang with everyone during lunch. But seeing as it was difficult to talk it's probably better this way.

Steve and Ann thanks again for organizing this and enjoy the ice wine.

Cheers,

Dave

Great conditions and great people - what more could you ask for? :biggthump Thanks to Steve for organizing and Dave & Steve for hauling me around.

Neil, Steve, and I went up to Lake Louise today. The snow was really fast and pretty grippy, with the occasional ice spot to keep you on your toes. I found myself going way too fast for conditions multiple times! Neil was grinning like a little kid at the moguls. :) Steve and I cheered him on and went around. LOL!

I'll get the videos up over the next week or so as I find time. I'll post the HD versions to YouTube, then people can grab them with something like www.keepvid.com or similar. My 9 PM flight got changed to 11:30 with no notice until I got to the gate. :( Shame I can't edit the videos right now as I've got some dead time.

Home safe, a little sore from lapping bump runs yesterday but otherwise fine. Thanks to all for a great weekend, especially Steve and Allison for being my chauffeurs. Looking forward to seeing some of the pics/video I missed from Saturday night.

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend. Stoked that I got to ride with so many great people! It's just a shame that there were so many peeps at Nakiska on Saturday - although from the traffic going out, it looks like everyone in Calgary decided to get out before the cold snap hit. I don't think the crowds would have been much better anywhere else.

Louise sounded like fun yesterday. Shame I was out of legs and trying to get some mobility back into my neck (yoga this morning was interesting ...)

All the out of towners got out just before we headed into the deep freeze ... stay warm!

That was the first NES for me, and definitely not my last. Next time I need to not hurt myself a week before and get rid of scheduling conflicts so I could come out more than just Sat and actually hang out with you guys later on!

It was great meeting all of you and actually riding with some hardboot brethren, and sisterthen (?), for a change.

Thanks!

Friday totally rocked! left feeling totally inspired. Can't wait to see some of the pics/vids. Nice to meet everyone and nice to see some carvers I haven't seen in a while. If anyone found a pair of legs on the upper pitch of North Axe...pretty sure those are mine.

I'm thinking it's gang colours. Steve hasn't shived his first jibber yet hence he's not allowed to wear the uniform? You can tell Corey is gangsta by the bandana.

Someone forgot to tell Steve that the official NES uniform is red jacket and black pants.Unless you own a red-flamed Coiler AM 172, in which case the general bad-assery of that paint job allows you to wear any colour you like, so long as it's black.

Steve hasn't yet threatened to 'rip the lungs out' of a ski racer that ran over his board. Once he's done that, he can join the red crew.

That was both awesome and scary to witness. I think that guy had an extra lump in his race suit after that lecture. Note to self: don't cross Darcy.

Here are the videos I took with my little point and shoot. Clearly I need a tripod but other than the shaky cam effect they are not too bad. Pretty good frame that youtube chose arbitrarily for that last one, Darcy killing it there as per usual. Figuratively, this time.

Great pictures. I bought a new jacket but decided not to conform, will look more like Dave and Zoe. Might get an NES uniform in a few more years when I am worthy. I will also leave threatening racer punks to Darcy for now.

It looked awesome to me Kurt. That camera angle isn't very flattering, I had to be too close with the super-wide-angle of the GoPro.

That's what it's all about for me Allee. Glad you got a kick, never take myself too serious.

Horned Monster is not likely leaving Alberta. I REALLY like that stick.

I'm at Panorama and ran into two HB'rs, third year hear, never saw anyon on HB's. the one guy rode super well and I was like "are you on Bomber dude"? He looked at me puzzled and I was like "guy where did you hey your Coiler"??!!!!

He said his cousin is JJA and I laughed. Great guy, great rider. He said he rarely saw any HB's at Pano and then 10 min later another ripper appears, turns out he's the head of the ski school and know's Mark Ballard of CSC. He's threatening an alpine get together. The hill is pretty sweet y'all.

Carbo Monster w/BBP comes out again tomorrow. Still trying to tame that MF.

Come to Pano guys. It's super fun.
