Early load will be Thur & Fri at 8:00 am. 1 hour before the public. We'll be doing vids & pics at that time to take advantage of fresh cord & no waiting for traffic.
Sat & Sun we'll have our own NASTAR time tables with no charge for NICErs.
The hardboot crew is getting excited about a local event as this comes together with Schwietzer's blessing. We're hoping to draw a big group so we have some precedent for next year.

Cool! I've wanted to check out Schweitzer for awhile. I see that Amtrak's Empire Builder stops right in Sandpoint...granted, at 2:30 a.m., but it could still beat driving.
If I were to go by train, would it be inconvenient not to have a car? (I.e., are there shuttle buses up the mountain if you stay in Sandpoint?)
Does anyone have lodging recommendations, either in town or slopeside? K2 Inn was recommended to me awhile back, but it's been through a change of management since then, I think -- does anyone have recent experience?
b0ardski
January 3rd, 2011, 03:30 PM
Coming to Sandpoint by train is tricky, It's not a manned station so I think there is no baggage service, just carry on. Contact them to be sure. The Edge Water Inn in is next to the train but transport to the mountain may be limited to Bonner Cab to the shuttle bus at the base of Schwietzer Rd.
K2 motel (4 blocks from the train) is still there. Buster (on BOL) & crew stayed there last year and were happy with it. you could send him a B-mail.
Here's a good link to learn more about the town and lodging options http://www.sandpointonline.com (http://www.sandpointonline.com/)
http://www.sandpointonline.com/visitor/travelcenter/index.htm (http://www.sandpointonline.com/visitor/travelcenter/index.html)
By Train
Amtrak's (http://www.amtrak.com/) Empire Builder route arrives and departs on a daily basis at Sandpoint’s historic railroad depot on Railroad Avenue, just off of Bridge Street. The westbound train departs at 11:49 p.m., and the eastbound train departs at 1:40 a.m. For more information, call Amtrak toll-free at 1-800-872-7245, or check Amtrak’s (http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage) website.
Driving from portland (5-6 hrs) is faster and gives you tranport & gear hauling while here.
I'll do some checking to compare slopeside vs in town lodging.

Well guys I checked this whole thing out.. and made calls... so all I can say its not Gruumer economical if you don't live there with a car..
Prices for one person was High as expected for one pers.. so I asked about town..
In town...that was doable.. but the next issue I found was.. they don't offer a ski bus from the hotels or town should I say or at least thats what they told me.. you have to make it to the base parking lot.. and then $3 up the mountain and free coming down... so that would mean a fricken rental car on top of that..
So let me know if I got that right.. was trying to come in on the 21st and leave on the 27th.. dates are flexible..
Let me know...
Man I think the SES is cheaper...Doh!!!

I'll be in Wilson, Wyo that week. I'd love to drive up for a day and hang out. Shouldn't be any issues that I can see. What sort of road conditions could I expect between Missoula and Sandpoint?
Shred Gruumer
January 3rd, 2011, 06:18 PM
Yea . Transpo.. is spendy and then for the whole week of shuttles and cabs..
getting to the mountain from the airport seems doable.. A Condo would be cool if the price is doable..
Or if anyone out there is looking to share and is going to be there from 21st and check out 27th or something like that i can be flexible depending on price and people.. I don't spooo....nnnnnn :nono: need own bed hahah...:sleep:

I live south of Missoula and drive I-90 to the Montana / Idaho border every week. I think they usually keep the roads pretty good. Shouldn't be bad.
Wow guys.... we got to get THE SHRED GRUUMER THERE! He is legendary! hahahahaa

I intend on being there for all the days. I have offered my help at booth. I live south of Sandpoint and will have room for one (sorry small car) and can pick-up and give ride to Schweitzer. Don't know at this point if I will be able to offer a place to stay. I would like to but I have a young child and don't know how this would work.
I have offered to make available demo boards (only alpine, possibly one all mountain) for the event, will see how the next few weeks go. I will not be providing bindings or boots. I hope to make this happen with N.I.C.E. but have not heard from Boardski skibum for about a month.
Looking forward to seeing lots of Alpine riders up there!

Hey all hardbooter's,
I will post a schedule of events in a day or two going over the event. The early loads should allow us to rip up the groomers in style without dodging others.Going to do some T-shirts so drop me a line if you'd like one. I haven't got a price yet but shouldn't be too much since I am hosting this event for non-profit. The warmth in my heart from giving back to snowboarding is payment enough for me. Contact myself or "kram" or "boardski" for discount tickets and use this promo code for discount lodging "trench". Time for a board break.

Hi Boardski, thanks much for all the info. I love the idea of taking the train because you can travel at night and sleep on the way -- I had a great trip to Whitefish a few years ago where I left Portland at 4:30 p.m. and was riding Big Mountain by 9:30 the next morning. But it sounds like it's not quite as smooth going to Sand Point -- carrying on two boards+all my gear would be a non-starter.
I'll see if I can rally some guys from Portland to make the road trip - those private runs sound pretty nice!

Wow, $2,000 midweek for 10 people is a smoking deal. Is 10 the max capacity of the cat? I have a buddy here who was possibly interested in driving out, and if we tossed in a day of cat-skiing, I think he'd be in.
Would people consider Thursday for the cat day? I don't think we'd be able to get there any earlier than that.

The cat seats 10 and lunch is included. Feb. 24th Thursday is 100% open with all 10 seats available, however Friday is already fully booked and 5 seats are open for Saturday. Sunday and beyond is also 100% open too. I would like to negotiate a special price for N.I.C.E. participants for a private cat at next year's event. I am still working on it for this year so speak up if your interested. I am trying for $106 a head. If I can get 10 people interested I might be able to talk my boss into it. Russ

The terrain on the backside of Schwietzer has some wide open bowls & a lot of open glades & sparse tree runs that start slightly steep and keep a comfortable pitch all the way to the cat road. Tight trees can be had along side the open glades for the more the adventurous in the group. Lots of small rocks & stumps to air and way worth the discounted price.

Im somewhat in. So what's the price for thursday? So what's the price per person? And
what type of terrain open or all trees?
Let me know and ill give u a for sure answer once u can answer mine.
Thanks
If i can get 10 seats for thursday it would be $106.00 per person. That is for a private cat full of hardbooters.

January 17th, 2011, 06:52 AM
Hey Buster, your carving skills are pretty solid, and I assume you can surf, so on the right board you should be able to handle it.
For a timid rider it might be a bit much. If your here on tue. you'll have a couple days to dial in a powder board in bounds. If you need one I'm sure we can supply a board that'll work for you or anyone else in your crew.
I'll have Russ chime in as he knows the terrain.

$106? AWESOME. Thank you Russ! As Chris said, let us know how payment needs to work. Do you need a single check for the whole amount, or can everyone just pay to you directly?

Hey Chris! I thought that might be you, but I wasn't sure. Remember riding those trees off the Rainbow chair in the snowstorm?
Glad that you're coming out West again! Is your friend from OES coming (I don't remember his name?)?
I seem to remember that you were right behind me or just in front of me when we were buying raffle tickets -- that means that Coiler should have been MINE! :nono: But it couldn't have gone to a nicer guy, hope you've been having fun with it :biggthump

Verbal confirmation would be fine for securing a seat on the cat, only confirm your seat if you can pay obviously. You can pay me when you get here. I work again on Wed. and would like to secure the cat if we're going to do it or else we risk the cat getting booked by somebody else on Thursday. We could reserve it for a diffrent available day too. Our rider level ability is if you can ride at your local resort on all the runs on a powder day you will have a blast riding with us. Our terrain is mainly black diamonds and blue squares, kinda just like Schweitzer. If you are struggling to keep up with the group you might consider sitting out a run or two to recoup some energy or get off the cat. I will do a head count for the cat on Wed.

But I'll start posting them in this thread till NICE week.
Yesterday was near bluebird (3rd in a row)firm but grippy cold chalk with occasional icy scrapes on piste and tracked up but soft packed pow off piste and fresh pow stashes if you go looking.
The cat jockies have been doing a great job keeping it smooth even on the steep groomers, there are Icy spots at the bottom on the front side where the snow guns are building up the mounds for the outrageous air show airial ramps above the village. This will make for a bottle neck but it's not too bad.

Where is the condo located where you are all staying, is it in the village or in town?
I'm looking at the options to see if I can make this trip happen. So far it looks like it would actually cost less to rent a vehicle in Spokane and stay in town vs. taking the airport shuttle to the village and staying there.
That's based on prices at the Selkirk Lodge with two of us coming but we might have a third person.

The condo is on the hill but it is pretty much full. Here is a link to some hotels in Sandpoint http://www.sandpoint.com/recreation/hotels.asp The K2 Inn might be your best value. 2 beds $39+tax. It's not super nice but it's not a full on dive. You can walk to the bars from there.

Went up this afternoon as it started snowing to take advantage of the empty super bowl Sun. slopes.
Most of the runs were pretty firm with just enough scraped up fresh to turn comfortably around the icy spots. The 165 escape needs a tune.:freak3: It got better by the hour as snow kept falling. It's going to snow all day tomorrow then clear up so Tue will be great.

Russ has lined up a local printer for shirts. The price should be no more than $15 for short sleeve, $20 for long.
I'll post the color choices (dark colors, white ink) and final price as soon as Russ hears back from the shop. Snowflake logo (attachment below) on chest something like this on the back

I have been on the snow every day since WTF. The grooming has been fantastic. Last week it was starting to get firm. Not icy but hard pack for sure. Sunday night it snowed 4" and Monday the groom was too soft to carve hard on. Today was nice! A little cold and windy but it was nice. Tomorrow is going to be even better! More snow coming on friday. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=otx&smap=1&textField1=48.332083333333&textField2=-116.65375

Went up this afternoon, was still nice carving on piste and wind packed pow off. The 178 oxygen railed grippy groomers & the wind filled chop with equal gusto, I just wish it was 23 wide instead of 26, too much underhang is hard work.

One of the Portland crew is looking for a powder board for the cat skiing. He's French, and his quiver here is just a single alpine board.
Rus, does the cat operation have any rentals?
Sean, I think he would love to demo one of the Donek Tankers, but not sure if you're planning to bring one up, and then it kind of misses the point for one person to ride it the whole day (though I would make a point to swap boards for at least one ride).

I have a K2 Eldorado 164 i would happily loan to you. I also could probably put my hands on a few other boards as well. Just pack your boots and a happy face.

we'll hook him up what ever his size/weight.
The 173 Identity is a great all mt pow board for 175-200# strong rider, Russ' 164 eldo is near the same style ride for a 150-180# guy, both are versatile with great float. We'll get him set up:biggthump

Big thanks to Rus, Kram and Boardski!
You guys rock and are setting up what looks to be a killer event. I will pass on all offers to Igor...basically, just let him know to pack boots and a smile.
I offered him the pick of my quiver, but the best powder board I own (that I'm not planning on riding) is an Arbor Munoz 162 -- better than an alpine board, but not an ideal flex or geometry for powder. Rus, your Eldo sounds awesome -- I'm pretty sure he weighs around 160.

Rode the 185 gs with Mark & John and got a little camera practice on perfect chalky groomers. Mark had the dslr, I had the handycam (I should read the directions:freak3:) and we hooked up with a big crew of lifties on their day off to practice shooting.
Loophole was 40yrds wide of ridge-less grippy corduroy that let the 185 rail like it was built to:1luvu:
Our cat jockies are dam good at their job:biggthump
I rode all day, followed the crew OB but the long heelside bushwhacking traverse to get out kicked my a$$ even on the 167.
Put the Elan Magfires on for night skiing and they switch carved like a dream on still sweet groomers (a bit short for me at 168 carving forward).

You will be able to pick them up from us when you're here at our event. Everything is coming out smoothly with pleasant surprises on our behalf, like Boardski & Thirsty Snowboard getting on the local radio kpnd. They both did a great job and thanks kpnd for the local exposure. We also now have a facebook page northidahocarveevent so please friend us & email address of northidahocarveevent@hotmail.com . Good morning Schweitzer crew, I have some bad news and some good news.
The bad news...Igor just broke his ankle snowboarding. (Don't have the details yet, but wondering if it was softbooting...would have been a doozy of a crash to break an ankle in hardboots.) As a result, he won't be attending NICE.
The good news...there's now an open seat in the cat on Thursday for anyone who was interested but didn't pull the trigger fast enough. Rus, I think there was enough interest to get someone else in that seat, but if not, let me know and we'll work something out so Selkirk Powder doesn't have to eat the seat.
Boardski, there's also an open bed in the condo now for Friday and Saturday -- again, hoping it will be possible to fill it.
Portland locals, anyone want a ride to Schweitzer? We're departing Wednesday afternoon, returning Sunday.

There is a lot of open bowl & sparse glades where the 191 will shine but some of the best pow stashes are steep & tight in or out and will favor the 178. Pack an extra layer, neck gaitor/facemask, wool blend socks and hand warmer packs to keep the toes, nose, and fingers happy for our early loads.
We'll start the week with powder and move into the cold chalky cord & blue skies that carving dreams are made of:biggthump

Howdy all,
Just got in from early loads on the Basin Express. We had a strong showing of 30+ riders from all over the USA converging on our early morning groomers. We left the runs an hour later all rutted and torn, good thing there is a whole lot more mountain to carve up. It is cold and most people are taking extra breaks to get out of the cold for a bit. It also also a good excuse to have a beer, which goes well with the cold temps. Blue bird day with unlimited visability is showcasing our resort nicely. Tomorrow is suppose to be cold and clear and we will once again be loading early to rut up the runs before public. Be at the clocktower and the Selkirk Powder Company desk area right inside the doors to the daylodge around 7:45 to sign a waiver and get tickets. You also can get a daily itinerary of what we're doing and where we'll be. You can also call me if you need anything Russ (208-290-8023).

HI ALL,
We had a Dylan with a straight flush for the winning poker hand today. We will see who wins tomorrow poker run. The Hawiians won farthest traveled and Shred will win toughest flight out. Anybody who needs a discount ticket voucher needs to get them from me, Russ (208)290-8023. I will also have some at the Selkirk Powder Company desk right between the cafeteria and coffee stand in the middle of the daylodge. We can no longer get them directly from the ticket window. Early Loads are scheduled on the Great Escape quad at 8:00am but we will be gathering up at the clocktower and the daylodge from 7:30 on. If you didn't do early loads today you need to sign a liability waiver and get a sticker for early load privileges and we'll be doing that inside by the Selkirk Powder Company desk area.If you signed today I believe you only need a new sticker. We also will have the daily itinerary to hand out in the morning as well or you could always call me.

Hey guys!
I was only able to be up for a short time Friday morning, but had a blast and was nice to meet some of you - hope you enjoyed our mountain! Here is a little vid I made, wish I could have taken more clips but the hands, and camera, both froze up on me! If anyone has an email list from the group, please pass this on as a momento of your week!

Without seeing someone boarding with ski poles in the video, this could have been shot anywhere. Fortunately you included the clock tower as a point of reference.
Wish I could have been a part of it.

Thanks Russ and Troy and Mark and Tanya and Sean(Mr.Donek) and Schweitzer for a great session!
For my last couple of NICE hours I had a blast doing Nastar with no practice on the Donek Plate; and then got reminded while going over the handlebars one gate from the finish of my 4th run why I should have practiced.I'll be feeling that lesson for awhile.Needless to say I called it a day at that point. That was my last run of NICE.
N.I.C.E. 2011 was great fun and a cool mini adventure what with the cat trip, the angry skier, getting lost 200 feet from the condo the blizzard of the century and so on:)
Thanks again!

Thanks for the video! You know, considering what Mother Nature dealt us that week, I think the early load made everything worthwhile! (Even if I didn't win the poker hand!!!!) And I think the Basin Quad was the perfect place to do it! Thanks guys all for a great vacation!
