View Full Version : Interesting camera perspective

I've seen a couple of videos done this way but I'm not sure how it's done. This one is from Loveland:

Is it like a GoPro on the end of a ski pole? Would it be at the end of the pole (like 4 feet) with a wide angle lens? I wonder how difficult it is to keep the camera pointed at yourself? Would this work for carving?

John,
There is a camera attached to the end of the pole that he is holding.
Here (http://www.transitionbikes.com/Video.cfm?Cat=&StartRow=1#15) is a similar perspective. You can see the pole, camera and counter weight in the shadow.

I tried that link but it seems to take forever (longer than I was willing to wait) to load.

If there is a counterweight in the video I posted, would it be near the rider's elbow? How hard would it be to keep the camera that stable?

no counter weight since there is no fulcrum.
the video I posted that had a counter weight used the helmet as the fulcrum, with the camera extended ahead of the rider.

Of all the Pokkis videos, it seems like the best one was on the pole facing down and forward so you could see the board and most of the rider. It cut off his head but with some tweaking, it comes pretty close. Seems like a longer pole and/or wider angle lens would get it.

Those clips i filmed were pretty much my first real Hero shots and i should have used wider 720 mode instead of 1080 to get my head also in picture :smashfrea

120cm as extended. 150cm would be better due it would give some more room to stay in picture :)

I just finished making my pole. My GoProHD is being over-nighted and I hope to have it in my hot little hands by tomorrow. There are minor differences between my pole and Pow4evers': I added a bike hand grip at the base; I used an eye bolt at the base to attach a leash and carabiner for deeper days; and I'm working on a gimbal assembly for the tripod mount. This will allow the camera to 'float'. I haven't quite solved it yet. I think there is another BOL thread dedicated to this idea OR there is a link to a gimbal assembly on another site. Thanks, Pow4ever!!!

Actually you can mount it to any pole. You just need to use car roll bar or racing cage mount to hold it to the pole. It can be purchased online. That's what we do in automotive comp. on track with GoPro... or many times on fender or on windshield with suction cup ;)
And yes you guys need to use 1080 mode. It gives really nice results, but it also depends on what you are shooting for :)

BB: I am very new to this and hope to know more in a few days. I got the Naked version with a tripod mount. Which means I can add a LCD screen when it becomes available and an additional battery feed.
The standard version doesn't include room for any of these upgrades on the GoPro cameras. Only the HD versions are upgradable. As far as being 'good enough' I'd suggest that if you are just wanting to view your own videos then the standard version is fine. Otherwise, if you are wanting to post videos on the web or make DVDs in HD, you'd be best served by making the additional investment. Hey, in a few years you'll be able to buy these cameras in a convenience store next to the Tums and cash register for $25.99 dollars anyway!!
