ncermak, did you edit your original post to include the "who do you want to win?" Or am I losing it and just missed it?

It's fun living outside of Hartford, CT at times like this. I think I live right on the boarder of where Sox and Yanks fans meet...A couple of miles in either direction and the table turns big time!

There are plenty of poor sports on both sides, my friend!

A fact I was reminded of when the Sox were down 3 games to none. Someone at my gym was so eager to rub it in that he did it in the middle of one of my sets, not cool!

You give Yankee fans waaaayy too much credit. They are not above anything. As for "Yankees Suck", well, they just do, and they deserve it. There is something wrong with winning a world series every 4 years on average, and being so damn smug about it.

And there is nothing worse than a New England Yankee fan. Except Connecticut I guess.

I absolutely abhor team sports and the commercialism they represent now. It has NOTHING to do with the love of the game anymore. They're all corrupt as it gets.

that said, I will eternally root for the underdog in ANY situation, so my barely noticeable "root" will go to the Red Sox

Im a Yankees Fan by birth (Born in Jersey). They're going to defeat the sox tonight, but I think that the Cardinals will beat them in the series. As for the whole poor sportsmanship thing, the Sox fans are much much worse. If I were to wear a NYY hat into Boston after Boston loses a game to the Yanks, I would probally run into alot of trouble (known from experience). However, during the summer me and my friends went to new york for the weekend and one of them wore a Red Sox hat thinking he would cause all kinds of trouble. We must have been to 40 places that day, only ONE PERSON said anything to him, and that was only because we had been standing in line chatting with the guy for a good hour, and we were getting really bored. The thing with Sox fans is that they all hate the Yankees, but with the Yankees, the Red Sox are just another team to play, nothing more. Try as you may, if you went to New York, you wouldnt be able to find any "Red Sox Suck" Shirts, but up here I see "Yankees Suck" Shirts EVERYWHERE. People around here just need to realize that there is no curse of the bambino, and that every time the Sox talk about it, they lose. Im glad to see the ball parks limiting the number of beers you can have though, maybe it will help to curtail the riots when the Red Sox lose the series.
As far as winning a world series at least once every four years and being smug about it, wouldnt you be? Plus they arent even that smug, just proud. I know that if I was top ranked snowboarder in the world for a season at least once every four, I would be damn proud, and probally even get a little smug.
-Justin

By the way I voted yankees.

I see that there's a lot of New England folks chiming in...for any die-hard Boston fan you have to read the game by game commentary of Bill Simmons aka "The Sports Guy" on Page 2 at espn.com. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/archive?columnist=simmons_bill&root=page2

As a born & bred member of the Nation, he truly captures the passion, swinging emotions, and obsession that New Englanders have for the Red Sox in all of his writings.

For those of you who can't understand the "Yankees Suck" comments or any other tasteless comments about that other team....you must first understand the fact that the Red Sox are woven into the fabric of New England culture. There's a mystique about them and Fenway that's ingrained into our psyche since birth. Sometimes we go overboard and cross the line, but that's just testament to how passionate and obsessed we are about our team. Yeah, it's unhealthy and after the past two games the whole city needs one big supply of Zoloft to cure our mood swings ....but heck, that's the trials and tribulations of a Boston fan. We live by the Sox and die by the Sox.

Ortiz for President!!!

Are you telling me that if the Red Sox outspent the Yankees by a factor of 2 on their payroll, consistently dashed Yankee fans' hopes on the rocks year after year, and won world series at an unnatural rate defying laws of probability, while the Yanks suffered a seemingly endless drought.... that Yankee fans would continue to be so "noble"?

Is anyone in New England getting any work done this week? What time do these games go to there? I'm having trouble staying awake for the whole game and I'm 3 hours behind.

Go Sox! Yankees Suck! Some day maybe we'll have a Red Sox vs. Giants World Series. It would be like when the Bruins play the Sharks. I just don't know who to root for. You can take the boy out of New England...

So true.

I didn't even grow up in New England - I grew up in the Saratoga NY area - in my mother's side of the family (all New Englanders) being a Sox fan is a family tradition, and my mom indoctrintaed me at a young age (5 y/o, 1975, 1st baseball memories are the World Series that year) I still carry it in my blood!

This October and last, it seems like I run into other Sox fans everywhere I go here in OR.

I do think a lot of fans on both sides take it way too far... but I also don't think "Yankees Suck" is going too far. (Nor do I think Yankee fans saying "1918", "Who's your daddy", or "Red Sox suck" is going too far). Violence - that's too far. (I've seen it at both Fenway and Yankee, spent 5 years in Boston and 3 in New York, been to both stadiums quite a bit)

I have a number of friends back east who arte rabid Yankee fans. When the teams play each other, the casual observer might not think we are friends, but it's all in good fun.

As far as classless fans, how about the NY fans throwing stuff tonight? At Fenway they only threw foul balls back.

and for your amusement guys....

Boston sports teams are like men in relationships:

The Patriots are like the new boyfriend that you really like - he's awesome, but almost too good to be true, so you worry.

The Bruins are like the guy that you just casually dated and you don't really care about him, he's just something to do. ( I actually adore the B's but whatever, there's no hockey this year anyway)

The Celtics are like the marriage that was great at one time but has lost its spark and you always kinda look back and think about how great it was.

And the Sox are the hard core abusive husband who just absolutely beats the sh!# out of you, but day after day you always go back to him cause you always believe that tomorrow will be different and you just love him too much.

Go Red Sox!

I was a Mets fan growing up (1986 Baby! oh... um... yea, that Red Sox lost that one too :() and nominally support the Yankees as a New York team (although I don't want pro sport much anymore)... however I'm rooting for the Red Sox to win the World Series that way they can FINALLY stop whining and moping around every year. If it means they have to beat the Yankee so be it.

I went to college in Boston during the recent Yankee World Series reign and it was just painful to see everyone in Boston be disappointed and pathetic looking year after year after year. While I like it when my team wins, I personally don't like humiliating my opponents as the Yankees have done.

Maybe with this unprecedented comeback, the Red Sox can finally get that monkey off their backs.

but at the same time, I HATE it when people win because someone else fails horribly

and that was clearly what happened. it was like the yankees were sleeping or something?

or was it simply BEING THERE, in a game 7 after leading 3-0?

Over the past 4 games the Yanks were totally outplayed and outclassed on their own turf. Give credit where credit is due... sure the Yanks choked, but the Sox orchestrated the BIGGEST comeback in sports history. They fought back throughout the series and beat up the Yanks bullpen ....and put a stake in Rivera. The Sox bullpen staff was phenomenal--the Yanks were practicly hitless. After a roller coaster season, D-Lowe pitched his greatest game ever!! Johnny-D & Belhorn finally realized they were playing in a baseball game and laid the smackdown blasting HR's all over the place.

Even with all of the excitement of winning the series, there are some things I'm still a little perplexed about....
1) What the heck was Francona thinking putting Pedro in the 7th? Is the guy trying to get fired a la Grady?
2) Does the third base coach Dale Sveum ever hold a guy on third? I was holding my breath the entire game hoping that his mistake to send Damon wouldn't come back to haunt us.
3) Did you ever think we'd win the series and have Manny RBI-less?

Yes...hell did freeze over...and....pigs did fly last night in the bronx!!!!

The RED SOX are headed to the World Series!!!!!

You could not be more wrong if you tried! Damon blew them away by surging out of his post-season slump and returning to true form. Derek Lowe shut down the offense last night - allowing one hit in 6 innings. Curt Schilling had a near out of body experience and shut them down in game 6 - allowing one hit in 7 innings with his heel sewn together and bleeding through his sock like The Natural. The Sox posted ONE error the entire series. And we had to do it all without Manny Ramirez's bat. The Yanks did not play sloppy baseball. If there is one team who can come back from 6 runs down in late innings, it's the Yankees. If there's one team who can blow a 6 run lead, it's the Sox. The Sox were just as tired and had been through the wringer and just came back and won fair and square. Congratulations Red Sox!!

In a way, the Sox have won something even more special than the WS. No matter what the outcome of the series, they are going down in history as the first team in the history of baseball to come back from 0-3 and win. The facts that no team had ever even forced a game 7 let alone win, that they did it through the Yankees, and in the Yankee's house makes it a trifecta the weight of which I cannot even comprehend right now!

As for the fans, Jim Rome pretty much ripped the Yankee fans up and down yesterday for throwing crap on the field after the umps made correct decisions. If the Sox fans are being cocky now, well, I can't really blame us. There is a collective orgasm happening in Boston and New England right now, of epic proportions.

Not really Jack I think it was the Seattle Mariners who broke that record against the Indians a few years back.. Try 12 runs in two innings,, I think is was that..

But even better was this years record 22-0 lose against the Tribe in the Yanks house..man how people forget!! its not only Boston who hate em!

Say what ya will, but the Yank fan is right up there with the Raiders fan.. some exceptions exist, but not many!

Why yes,, it is fun to Yankee bash.. Im sorry... oh and a Yankee fan wouldn't be all over this is they won! ohh the pain!

I'm a raised in boston die hard fan for all the teams. I've been there when the Pats couldn't win to save there life, when the bruins won the stanley cup, when Russel and Havlicek took the boys to win the NBA titles and of course have been there year after year with the Bosox even after 75 and 86. This is the meaning of being a diehard Boston fan. It transends the petty and defines the true meaning of "Fan". And I think that all the other relocated fans out there would agree. All teams are great and also change naturally due to trades etc. but not all teams have the mystique. Enough said, Sox in 6.

What is the point? You know, it's all just supposed to be for fun. Why dis on something that brings people joy? I used to be a sports snob. In college I rowed crew. In retrospect we were the biggest pack of elitist A-holes on campus. Not even the D1 football team wore their varsity jackets around more than us. In reality, we looked down on everyone because we were jealous that we chose a life that had us walking around half asleep from 5:30am practices 6 days a week, and which prevented us from partying and hooking up with chicks and all that "normal" college stuff. We'd wear t-shirts that said "I can't, I have crew in the morning", and, "atheletes row, the others play games". Well it's all crap. Take a frickin' step back. When teleboards came out I thought they were stupid. I even told someone trying one that it was the "wrong" thing to use for carving. What an idiot I was. I still have no interest in riding one, but if somebody likes them, what's the problem there? It's all about fun. It's all about doing what makes you feel good and makes you enjoy yourself. That's it. You think it's absurd that a soft-in-the middle near middle-age guy can make millions hitting a ball with a stick, and that millions of other people will watch people doing that? Well, how absurd is it to stand on a plank and slide down a snow covered hill on the hairy edge of control? Or how absurd is it to go out and run to nowhere in particular, or to pick up heavy things and put them down again and perform zero useful work? And how absurd is it to think that other people are silly for enjoying something, and then to actually tell them that you think that? What purpose does that serve? Does it make you feel better? Superior? Enlightened? I know it does, because I used to do it. I probably still do sometimes if I'm not careful. Screw it. I'm learning that I enjoy life a lot more if I don't worry about what's cool or sophisticated or smart or what other people do to get off and if they're doing it the right way. If someone is dancing in the street because their professional sports team of choice just won a game, it's a lot more fun to go rock out with them than it is to walk by and shake your head.

Rant off. This was not directed at anyone in particular. I certainly understand the human nature to be a sports snob.

I truly was congratulating the Sox...I just wish the final game had been a little less sloppy on the Yankees part. 10-3 isnt much of a challenge.

I'll reiterate: I _never_ watch team sports...well...unless the people Im living with at the time do. Dudes I used to live with always watched the laker games so I was forced for the most part...and in this situation Im stayin with my dad right now, and he wanted the yankees to win

As Shaughnessy reminds us....just remember....the Sox were up 2-0 in '86...don't pop the champagne just yet. The Cards are a strong team at home and so far in the series Poo-holes has been shut down. However, we do have Pedro pitching tonight vs. Suppan. It should be a great game!!

It was all meant to be. These guys are what baseball is really all about. Like Manny said, "It's a kid's game and you have to play it like a BIG KID." BLAM!!! They said Ortiz was KILLING the ball in batting practice last night. Our boys were loaded for BEAR last night. A boring game ? C'mon Bob. Can you imagine if that had happened at home last night ? The mayhem ? Oh the humanity !

No way that game was boring. a 3 run lead is never safe against a lineup like the Cards. All it would have taken is a walk, an error, and for any one of their sluggers to break out the way Damon did in Game 7 vs. the Yankees. Plus, after the 3rd inning it was *both* sides putting up zeroes for 6 innings. (The Cards got out of a LOT of jams... the Sox left 12 on base, the game shouldn't have been as close as it was).

In any case... I am all smiles this morning and it would take Mt Hood having a major eruption to wipe it off.
