The Discovery Channel had a program on last night narrated by Morgan Freeman called 'Through The Worm Hole'. In the episode, a Theoretical Physicist named Garrett Liesi is seen wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the Donek logo. This guy is one smart cookie, ya'll!
Is Mr. Liesi a BOL member?

Garrett used to be a Summit County rider. He moved to LA some years ago. Always rode with a trademark white flowing lab coat when riding at Abasin. Not only super smart, a profecient rider to boot.

I wondered if anyone else out there had seen this before me.
Sorry again,

sorry; didn't mean it like that at all.
The more alpine exposure to the main stream the better?
Figure a picture help out the cause.

I hadn't seen it! WOW! When he came to the SES a few years ago, I asked what he did. He said "I'm a physicist" and I went "pfft yeah right" until I saw him in a magazine. I know it's not what I'll be when I grow up - he explained it in layman's terms and i still don't get it
Super cool Garrett - defy all odds and keep creating (and surfing, riding, etc) !

Pow: No problem. Like anyone else, I was stunned to see a familiar logo from carving on television. Initially, I didn't think I was seeing correctly. I got up close to the screen to make sure it was a Donek logo.
If I remember correctly, there is older SES footage of Mr. Liesi riding in his lab coat. Anyone?

I don't think Garrett carves that much anymore - though he's been up to visit my neck of the woods (SF) twice or so in the last few years to give talks at and attend science/physics conferences, and we've done some kitesurfing in the bay when he's free and I'm uninjured :)
Here's him in a lab coat from... gosh, 7-8 years ago? The last year that the SES was actually half in Summit county. I think this was at Beaver Creek... on Harrier? It's been a while.

This brings up an interesting question that I really never ask any of my fellow carvers - what do they do for a living? I know it doesn't really matter, but at the same time it would be cool to know that I'm riding beside a guy who studies worm holes and can rip it! Thanks for the video Ken.

It's weird when I find out what people do for a living. I just know you guys as "carvers". Everyone already knows what I do. LOL
What do you do Steve?

What do you do Steve?Near as I can tell, he rides boards and bikes and travels a lot... there might be some techy thing in there too.

Sounds like a good thread starter. Thought I had saw one already, I'll have to search around.

Hey Kids,
Yah, I'm a flakey BOL member, but I still fly the colors, and get out and carve a few weeks a year. The kitesurfing on Maui has been too good during the winter to leave.
I expect I'll be in Tahoe again for a week in February, and some aerospace engineers invited me to give a keynote for their conference in Big Sky in March; in exchange for lift tickets -- woot!
Every once in a while I think about making it out for another SES... but if you knew how much fun kitesurfing in Maui is in the winter, you'd understand. It's not like I'm missing SES because I'm behind a desk. :D I do miss it though, so I'll come back to the fold eventually... and maybe do another season in the Rockies.
Best,
Garrett
P.S. Michelle, I wouldn't have believed me either. And I think Ken still doesn't believe me -- heh.
P.P.S. Latest physics is going well.

I can imagine that the kiting in Maui far surpasses anything in the Rockies, but we'd love to see your famous face again if you can spare a week at the SES one year. This year is looking to be a huge one for sure!
Glad to see that you are still around! and congrats!

I'm still somewhat confused about what a theoretical physicist would be doing with a lab coat.

Yes, I'm a Database technical geek specializing in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. I own my own consulting company and am a full partner in another that provides database services world-wide. All this to fund my carving, cycling (downhill, all mountain, road), long-boarding, soccer, ball hockey, RVing and photography obsessions.

The first couple years I went to the SES I stayed with Garrett in Frisco. Had some great conditions at the Basin this day. Happened to get a couple of great shots of Garrett on the steeps. The riders on the ridge top pic are: Bob Jenny, Norm Bemel, Ken Lao, Garrett Lisi, James ?.
These are from 2004. Enjoy - McDougall

McDougall, I remember many years ago when we stayed with Garrett at his pad. You brought a bunch of smoked salmon along with tons of shrimp. We had good eatings for a couple of days. That was a great session!

West Wall it is. Its waiting for you Mario, I want to be there to watch. Back side Zuma bowl has some steep groomed faces that I think you will be interested in also. Break free of the LCI bonds and come to the dark side, well, at least the other side of Loveland Pass.

Ha, thanks for bringing the memories back. Between talking about A-Basin and McDougall's Alaskan seafood, you guys are making it harder to stay away. I keep looking at my kiteboard in the corner though... it's needy.

Ask Ice about our day in zuma, how I was killin'it on Bear??? right up until I wasn't on the 86 and did a belly slide for a few hundred yards towards a pair of tele skiers watching us make fools of ourselves:D, fun stuff, I think you were supposed to join us that day. I will probably pick up a 4 pak for the freak show and join you a few times this season

Man, I remember that run, too. Sick.
Maybe second year on plates, sitting at the top of the steepest run I had ever tried to carve on, with like 40 other carvers watching, and it was my turn, and go big or go home I guess! I made 5 very, very high speed carves, just barely holding on for dear life on those heelsides, got to the bottom with the biggest ****-eating grin of all time, and I was hooked. OK, I was already hooked, but I was hooked more.
Man, that was a great session overall, too, with the bomber factory tour (with the fainting) and the A Basin (with the high altitude fainting) and the shrimp and the carvy carving... etc., etc..
