I'll be there at least for part of it, I'm sure..... I'm within a 3 hour driving distance, so shouldn't be to hard.... maybe I can get the other Missoula folks to join (there aren't many here, but a few floating around)

Allee, don't know how my finances are going to be this year, but would you want to do the condo again? that was sweet....... but that year there was too much damn snow!!!!!

Hey, don't forget, I'm from Pennsylvania..... give me some man-made snow and I'll be quite content!!!! You'd think after 8 years in Montana that I could handle the powerder.... yeah, right! Actually, PA probably got too much damn snow this past year though!!!!

Becki's got a couple good pow boards you could try out with Burton soft SI or plate SI, a board in pow is easier than skis;)

Kinpa, you really need to come to SkES next year! All we had on the King this season was manmade. And that is what always predominates on the lower slopes where the best carving terrain is. Perfect!!! :biggthump

Yes, so true.... that's what brought me out here, bigger mountains and more snow..... but it doesn't mean that can't run a cat over it first and pack it all down for me!!!!! hahahahaha

The board I have to teach on is a Rossi All-Mountain board.... that's what I would use in the powder. I do have Burton SI soft boots, but I can't wear them anymore... they kill my feet! I have plates on that board.

Anyway, 2 Ravens...... think ya might make the trip up for WTF???? I'd love to find someone to share a place with. Maybe we can get Allee to come down too.

Kinpa, it's difficult to see that far ahead, but if I have an actual income and all the various body parts are working again by then I would love to come up! Had a super time closing weekend, and it would be great to see Big Mountain with a bit more snow. And I bet the two of us together could twist Allee's arm hard enough to get her down again too!

That sucks - I hope you heal well Paul. When I broke mine several years back the doctor had me back on snow in like six/seven weeks (can't quite remember), but he also screwed it to a plate in order to make that happen. The plate was somewhat necessary anyhow because the doctor was not convinced it would heal on its own without a plate so YMMV.

Paul, was it displaced much? I did a number on mine a few years ago. Even with a plate I was still recovering at 12 weeks. However... he still rode 3-4 days (if that many) after getting put back together (plate and screws). As I remember, he needed a little less than 100,000 vertical feet to capture the most vertical ridden at WMR for the season. So Angry Rick and I would ride as blockers to protect him from someone else colliding into him. And yes he did get the Big Vert for that season.

Early season snow in the video was excellent! I had not ridden a soft gear/freestyle set up in many many years. The turns were very surfy and so fun!

November 10th, 2010, 06:01 PM
The majority of the 30 inches that were enjoyed a week or so back is nearly all gone. There was a recent dusting 2 nights ago. Snow level is only down to about half way and the top looks pretty thin. 20% to 30% chance of snow till Friday night, then 40% -60% for a couple days after that.

It will come, and it will be so good!

I just picked up some passes for a friend at Costco, they are two for $99cad. They seem to be valid for the full season and they are two individual passes so they can be used by one person on several days.

I am not sure how long they will have them, but if anyone is coming through Calgary and doesn't have a Costco card, I could probably try to make something happen.

dredman
November 30th, 2010, 04:53 AM
I would advise anyone that is planning on riding the WMR more than 3 days this season to pick up a frequent skier card (http://skiwhitefish.com/tickets_passes_winter.php). After 2-3 days of riding you will be saving money and only spending $41.00 per ticket. These cards must be purchased by December 24, so you better get moving on this deal.

Things are shaping up for a reasonable opening weekend here.... Just a bit more snow and it should be great!

Any of the local talent planning on being up on Saturday?

Cheers, dredman

I will be making the 3 hour drive after work on Saturday (get off work around 2:30pm), riding Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, then heading home Tuesday night to make it work early on Wednesday.

did not go up today cause had to work, but just to let you all know
that it started to dump around 11am and its non stop dumping, just
hope that this doesn't turn to rain tomorrow. this big push is comming
from the west northwest so it maybe mixing with cooler air from the
north so this maybe a good thing. this snow is much needed, it will
heal all the ice and be a good base for the groomers. anyways, powder
or good groomers are better than ice. THANK YOU FIN!!! for the plate

Tomorrow should be even better carving conditions if we do not get any snow tonight and the crowds should be non-existent!

Home in one piece, had a fantastic weekend! Even if the snow was not in any way, shape or form "carving conditions" and I got my ass handed to me by Mr Redman's 180 MRC all morning Sunday ... the toe and I admitted defeat at lunchtime and limped back to Calgary ... contrary to what the somewhat optimistic earlier posts would have you believe, it was a challenging weekend on the hill. Very soft, big crowds on Sat chewed everything up, warm temperatures made snow wet and lumpy. Hard yards ...

It was great to meet people I've ony ever spoken to online, and catch up with old friends again. Hope to see you all in March for closing (and that includes you, Kinpa!) Good job on the weather, Shred, couldn't have been nicer. I was thrilled to see what the hill looks like from the top ... it was the first time in 4 visits I could actually see from the top of Chair 2!

Hope you guys have a great week, it should be stellar once the groomers get a couple more passes over it. Have fun, stay safe, see you all next time.

I will post pics as soon as I get them resized. The plate on my forward binding failed at the left rear set screw hole. It broke all the way thru. The bolt holding the heel bail to the plate also failed. I did not feel it break but noticed it when I got to the lift line. It felt spongy and loose. anything is better than rain... so its snow... but not too much goomers are still great.. little socked in today but soft as butter..

Rode the Bomber plate on my Oxess with a waist of 23cm... and it was interesting ,, not for everyone and not for every board.. some things are the same as what has been posted , but I spent all day on it , changing things up to see what does what.. It is not for intermediate rider at all !!!!!! Only because its stiff.. so there is no room for error. especially on cat tracks and slow speeds.. and if your board is wide forget about it.... you got to be really quick on your feet.. The stiffness of the plate really is not forgiving.. agian I put it on a wider board which I think is not a good thing.. but the good point is I know why it works for racing.. the faster you go the better the plate becomes... for just goofing around and all around riding... the plate needs to be more softer between the feet... way softer.. I almost got killed... but when I got to open it up.. its heaven.. My thought is .. you almost need a soft version.. for the all mountain carver.. once you get in a turn theres no coming out unless you know how to really recover.. there is benifits to it but not for intermediate riders.. softer flex may change that.. I have another plate that is much softer and it is very nice to ride.. so maybe just like boards you will have a soft, medium and stiff for what you want... once you are locked in a turn. you are in... Its very good at speed.. it turns a 163 into a super G board.. and its super edge hold.. will know more as conditions change.. If you think you can ride it in moguls and thing that it softens the bumps... then from what I found ... well you got some good hippie lettuce...

If your board is wider than the plate... new issues arise. and it aint good..you need to be on your game cause the plate makes you very very exact.. now I know why its good for going fast and racing but for just tooling around.. the plate has to be flexible.. and maybe some lateral flexibility..

so hard to explain everything of what It felt and what it did.. but its not for wider boards from what I found, I can tell you that.. or at least the version I rode..

The SPG I ride is very soft between the feet and is fun to ride.. so I think its a flexible stiffness thing..

If you race then you want stiffer.. if not you want some flexible between the feet.. I'll report more,,,

The Bomber plate without question is the best hardware best constructed plate I have seen.. its a work of art..as you would expect.. but dont think you become a super hero... again the stiffness was a huge factor at low carving speeds..

Im not saying its bad , because when I started hauling ass.. it was awesome.. but when I wasn't it was a problem. better have good balance skills and quick feet..

Ed's Run?

Actually, I did take it on Ed's after a few easy ones on Chair 6 (that's the one from the village area to the base lodge, real mellow when there are no beginners on it first thing in the morning! After that too many moving targets!) Ed's was a little scarry at first, but the board turned nice.... once I was assured I could skid it out if I needed to, I wasn't afraid of it anymore! Doesn't mean I could link up every turn, but I can't do that on my own gear either! The video was actually on Chair 3 which was a green run and one of my favorites. Yeah, there is a little pitch near the top, but then it flattens out enough that I don't have to worry about speed so much. Yeah, I still equate speed with a big board, but it turns so nice that I didn't need to worry. Maybe some day if I win the lottery I'll hire Shred to design me a board.... And maybe if I'm really nice, I'll get to try the mini naked monster which I hear is the the works! :biggthump

Excellent groomers, Good visibility from mid to bottom, so Chair 2 was riding very nicely till noon... Then Toni Matt was riding very nicely from about 1/4 of the way down to the bottom. Hardly anyone braved the fog on Chair 1 so even in the afternoon Toni Matt was riding very nicely.

At the "Frabert" (= screw-up of the week) in the Bierstube tonight, the ski patrol told a story from the week that involved a ski patroller with mittens that have safety strings on them... who stopped to take a wiz.... the fellow finished up his business and could not find his yellow pee hole in the snow... he continued to look around and his clothes were not wet....shrugged it off...then put on his mittens... Yep, filled it right up.

The skies look clear tonight and the groomers are once again buffing out the snow for another day of fun.

Tomorrow, visibility and conditions permitting will be a tribute the the Honorable Shred Groomer. Johnasmo will be riding the Violator 188 and I will be on the Das Amputator 201. Tried to drink the town dry all week but no luck..... take this commentary for what its worth....

Dredman, Johnasmo, Rick (if you can keep up with those guys, very nice work), and Cuban nearly cut the left hand side of the mtn clean off. Careful next time you ride that side. It might fall into the ocean.

Cuban might have found a board to replace the Madd. His new Coiler is sweet. fo sho.

Steve can still ride the sh*t out of a 210cm Diablo.

Mark from Idaho is most improved rider imo (you're riding wicked bud) but needs money for the stick he, inadvertantly bought. (not his fault)

Shred's new Oxxess is SWEET! Didn't see nearly enough of him. Next year SG.
Shirts are sweet, thanks!!!!

Always good to see Russ from Idaho (Whats your gal's name again???!!!) You were riding the Prior super well. We missed Boardski.

Rode with a guy that made the trip from Hawaii on a Donek, super nice guy, geat rider. I would guess he travelled the furthest.

There was probably 20 alpine riders at the high point, maybe more????, they were spread all over the mountain

Conditions were challenging (for me) with the big amounts of snow and low visibility on some days. Today was over the top and made up for all of them. Whitefish is a great mountain, and a great town. I highly reccomend it.

I'm missing people for sure, I'm sorry. I'll try and add more info as I recall it

We did have the best day yesterday and it looks like we will have sun today. The groom has been perfect the last couple days and I expect the same today. Ptarmigan bowl was groomed for the first time this week so it was not up to par. I expect it will perfect today.

Today is my last day ridding at the WTF and it looks like it will be a dandy.

whew!!! a solid week of wtf11, going back to work is a good rest. wow!!!
another stellar day, same conditions as yesterday, great carving in the
morning than a little wet-n-heavy after lunch. the sun was out for a little
while than high overcast with the sun filtering thru than cloudy. it was
great that the snow held up cause temps are pretty warm. the snow
we had last week really helped maked this weeks groomers carvable.
it was great to see everybody again and i'm glad i got to ride with
everyone. this is the best unorganized carving event in the country,
just show up and ride. hope to see you all again next year...
rode my donek 171fc2 from 9 till 1:30...

Yesterday he predicted I would go home early if the light got flat. But it wasn't so much that as my quads were feeling like I was just borrowing them from a cadaver after riding yesterday afternoon and this morning with the Montuckeyho boys. You guys rip.I like to think I'm always pushing to get better, but riding with Dredman and Johnasmo will surely result in a bump in fitness I needed just in time for SES.It brings up a point that is made frequently on Bomber; ride with great riders if you want to be a great rider.Oh and thanks to Dred for setting up the boilerplate on my board in the dark parking lot.Wow,what a work of art that plate is! And this one was a blem.Who could tell? Mighty high standards at the bomber factory.

Totally agree with big canuck that Mark(kram) is the most improved rider since last WTF.It will be interesting to see how Rick(brand new carver kicking ass on a 155 Hot Logical asym and ski boots! Not that there's anything wrong with that...) is doing next time.Wish I could have been there to see Kinpa, another contender, ride the monster.

Shred and Cuban, always a pleasure.Big canuck,Maureen will be there with me next year so remember to bring lots of aero chocolate bars.

Looking forward to seeing some of you at SES and NICE next.Otherwise, until next year!

Thanks Shred.... actually it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Once again I can say a well designed board rides well. One day, maybe I'll have you design one for me. When you first said about getting on it, I kinda took it as a dare.... I figured one day I'd have to prove myself. Maybe the next dare should be that I actually start laying some over! hahaha..... but seriously, thanks a ton for letting me try it out.

Seriously no carving shots???
I'm beginning to wonder is this actually a carve fest or a drink fest:eplus2:
I've seen more pics of empty glasses than carving?

We want to see some action shots:angryfire

I bet you guys had more glasses of beer than carved runs on the mountain;)

Hell, the only reason I go there is for the drinkin'. Some mighty fine drinkin' in that part of the state.:) There's a reason every second person you meet in Whitefish is from Calgary!

See you in March, team!

you wtf ers were lucky to have such good weather. today thick fog down
to chair 3 and dumping snow in the mid morning. had to be very careful
with saturday crowds and low visibility. forcast is more snow tonight and
tomorrow and temps are to drop to single digits in the next few days. so
maybe good groomers by mid week. anyways, it was good to just putt
around and relax. rode my 160speed from 9 till 1...

hope you all had a good time and made it home safely...

got some

You must stop posting up these photoshopped pics to try to prove how great the carving was....really.

We know you guys spent all your time in the bar talking about carving and how good you are.

If you are going to photochop something, at least make it believable. There is sunshine in these pics......What up with that?
