Subject says it all: What is the oldest gear you still ride?

I though of this because I read the message in the classified and I browsed www.oldsnoboards.com 's site, and I saw stuff that is not THAT old. I saw a 1995 FreeSurf Highlander 155, the same that I sold 3-4 years ago.

My personnal oldest is my 1993 Burton Air 6.1 with the binding that came with it, Burton Freestyles, all this the first year that Burton came out with the 3D system. It is still my freestyle/freeride board. But I don't get it out much when I go snowboarding, I only see hardpack snow. The boots I had with it (rubber/leather Airwalk Advantage that weighted a ton!) were sold at the same time as the FreeSurf.

I'lll have to think on this one. I've got a pair of Kerma poles that I got in 1984 that I still use (I don't ski much). I have a Masque that I bought around the same time (it doesn't get cold enough in CA to use it - I keep it for wimpy friends). Oh, and I have a pair of Killy gloves from 1986 that never get much use but are decent back-ups in case stuff gets wet. I've had the same boot bag since 1984. It says Olin skis on it.

My ski boots are Langes from 1983, they still get hauled out once or twice a year. Can't justify the $800 it would take to replace them. I have a matching Lange boot bag from then, that sucker is indestructible - use it mostly for my snowboarding gear now.

My oldest piece of equipment that I still ride is a 2001 Burton FP64, but that is going to be retired before the end of the season.

It's width, stiffness and length make it great in powder. It does okay on groomers. Starts to flex at Ludicrous Speed.

Safari 175 with the Vader three straps. I rarely take the Safari out anymore.

I thought my "circa 1997 Donek Incline 168" was too new to mention, but mirror70 has me beat by a mile!!!

BTW that Incline makes one hell of a rock board. The DuraSurf base is close to indestructible. You've really got to work the wax in though. I'm not sure if Sean still uses DuraSurf on request, but if you need a board with a tough-as-nails base, ask him about it.

Don't think its ever been ridden. I'll give it a try if I can adapt a riser plate to fit my bindings to it. 5hole pattern I think.
How old is it?
Everything else is from around 99 and on, when I started my snowboard binge.

I have two pair of sims race plates that I've been using since about 94. Never seen another pair in use but they're made out of some kind of carbon fiber and are light weight and bullet proof. They were on my backup board until last year when I went to TD2 step-ins. Now they are third string after my TD 1's

1992 or 1993 Burton PJ7 Goofy Asym. Traded it last winter. I loved that board.

My hard boots are a pair of 91' or 92' Raichle AT boots.

I had just wore out a pair and bought another pair at a Ski Swap nearly new for only $20. Raichle Concordia model
They have been a great boot and I've rode everything with them in the day. K2 gyrator, Nitro Diablo, Option freecarve, MLY race,
Sims Burner 197, and I still ski with them too. What a fantasic boot. And you can walk around easily wearing them without looking like a freaky robot.

Two seasons ago. Spring time, PJ 7 Race arrives, it is so clean , the bindings are even at my angles and stance. I put some wax on it and road it that weekend /last day of the year. Added some vintage Burton neon clothing. Dude stepped right out of 1992!!!
Pull up at the lifts , the lifties , just stood there with their mouths open. Each round they would have new questions. "Dude, why did you cut the tail off!", "Is that , LIKE a snowboard" . It was then that I knew I would have to converge on the area with a number of the local "Old School" and give them them a visual history lesson. I think the time has come to round up the crew and give them a day to remember!!!

PS. Hey Jim, is that the yellow carving board you have ridden in any conditions for years! Now that is good service! Well done!!

Hi to all,

I'm new in here, but want to write something, too ;)
My oldest SB-Gear is a Crazy Banana from about '87 with the binings it came with. It's one of many Brazy Bs built in these years with that crazy yellow and pink colours.

I must admit, that I use it only once a saison in the powder just because it's a board that's so old-fashioned ;) It's a strang feeling because of huge board-width and lot of setback combined with that big nose... but it work wll in the powder ;)

I did not sell it yet, because I won't get any money for it. And so I keep it for remembering the good old times.

Snowboard-wise, I've got a '94 Asym Air that hasn't seen snow for a couple of years but I usually take it as a backup/rock board. I've also got an '89 or '90 Gnu Raceroom that I haven't ridden since I got the Asym Air. I'd have to drag out my old Koflach Damian model boots to ride it because my Raichles won't fit in the Elfgen heelclip bindings and I can't mount more modern bindings on it. I bought a used Tanker 200 last spring so now I've no reason to do that. Can't wait to try the Tanker out. Can't wait to see the look on the lifties' faces at my local hill.

Welcome to Bomber! Very cool that your first post is about Crazy Banana! They made allot of "Crazy" top sheets. Lots of rocker for sure!! Are you also an alpine rider? What is hot in Germany these days?

Thanks for your welcome!

Of course I'm alpine, never ever used softboots and I'm proud of it! ;) ;).
If your question about what's hot is about Hardboot-gear: Of course Virus is very hot, I love my WCR70 (170 length, 18.5 width), they will offer something wider (23cm) for this season. Anything alse is kind of disppearing :(... And of cours freestyle-stuff is same style as in the US.

Man, my second board was a Crazy Banana with the v-tail back in 88. The base was somewhat rounded, had Fritschi bindings on it. It was great in powder, that was about it, ended up busting it in the mogules.

My oldest board is an Asym M6 I think its 93-94, with some 91 Burton MDX boots. I still use it once a year for my annual Tuckermanns trip.

I remember those from the early 90s. Back then, these boards where insanely narrow. How wide is it by the way, I'm very curious to know to compare with modern boards who are all around 18.5 cm.

Thanks,

every season I bust out the Burton Cruzer 165. I have to wear modern boots, but the board is a trip and always gets some stares. I even passed it off to a kid as a prototype, then let him take it out.

I also run a MADD MIKES Bitchin' Board. plaid topsheet, directional board. 166. body built by k2, usually on that same day. always right at the end of the season.

would any east coast guys be intersted in hooking up for a retro day. we could get some competitions going etc.

I measured the Ride , It has a 19.5 waist width. It is still a sweet all-around board although well used and t-bolted .

Sold my other asyms - still have a '93 m6 but haven't had it out in a couple of seasons. Those things work great in the pow too!

Saw Chris Carrol riding one of those 24-7 boards a couple of years ago in Aspen. I think it was a 185. It looked like it had seen many-a-run over the years - and still seemed to work quite well for him!

This is exactly what I remembered. Wow, it's width is normal compared to modern freecarve boards, but back then, it seemed so narrow compared to other freecarve boards who were in the 21-23 cm range! If I'm not mistaken, there was also the smaller one which was red.

I wonder if we could say they were the first to com out with boards this narrow? The other ones I could think of are the Nitro Scorpion and the Burton Stat. Any ideas?

And I also forgot that my jacket and mitts also date from 1995. Yes, they are still good shape, and no holes in the mitts. The only thing is a the side that was getting used from carrying my board with the edges against the jacket, but I try to be more careful now.

Hell no!!! But it is the pullover type that you pass over your head (meaning not a full lenght zip, only half-lenght). And no, the colors are not fluorescent! The colors are similar to what you find on modern clothing.

1994 Madd 158,

Marmot clothing circa 1990

1985 Denon headphones

the second pair of prototype cateks- so far the discs have been updated to the 2nd generation after I crashed and twisted the prototype light blue anodized discs that were not released to the public. The bail handles have been replaced. But the bails- toe blocks as well as the carriages are all original.

I remember the stat as a wider board (like 21 - 22 cm waist) which evolved to the narrower FPs. The narrowest stock Burton FP I can remember seeing had an 18 cm waist).

Still on my early 90's PJ 6 mostly, when I'm not on my Asym Air. Love both of them, though I admit; between the cracks developing in the boards, my boots falling apart, and my bindings offering little stability, I'm in dire need of a new setup. ;) I didn't ride much after college (wife, house, kiddo), but I seem to be getting back into it more. Might spring for newer used stuff this year. (I say this now as I'm in the middle of buying a new house, and after just returning from an Alaskan hunt. ) Hehe, I've learned to duck when I see my wife reaching for the rolling pin... ;)

Checker Pig - Swing 6
I have no idea how old it is, but it was my bro's first board and I inherited it in '98. At that time it was already pretty much an antique. Still rides like a champ though. I did have to drill some holes and add some t-nuts last season after the front binding pulled off of the original drilled-in screw holes. Great for powder days or when you just feel like cruising in retro style.

The scorpion was definitely one of the first narrow symetrics; I used to ride for them, and made the mistake of geting the asym the first year (when they were still either 5 hole or topsheet). Broke it, and went to 2 scorpions, which I still have! awesome boards, and also 19.8cm wiasts I think.

Also, have a nitro EFT from 1991/92 season.... haven't ridden it for a while, and a brand new unused nitro epic 1992/93 season board... ready for bringing back out soon. Both will need T bolting though to take 4 hole bindings I guess.

My brother also has a moss (which he still rides) - this has to be the first super narrow board I've seen; 195 inch waist, asym; moss is a japanese board company, and it came out in 1990/1991 season. It has the super super tight radius nose shape on the toe side, so permanently sends up a small stream of snow right into my borther's face most of the time when he is riding on the toe side. And it is unbearable in tracking, due to the width and asymmetry; in fact it is the only super narrow asym I've seen, probably because Japanese have small enough feet to be able to ride it at 50 degree angles without overhang.

Bring back the Look Lamar trickstick and the K2 gyrator; the 2 ugliest boards I have ever seen!!~!!!

The other day I rode a 159 asym Misreral Extacy, with snowpro bindings mounted directly to the board (no insert pattern on this board). I think the board came out in '92.
