View Full Version : Should I try and fix this base issue?

I read about how important it is to have a flat base on your snowboard from side to side. I expected to see some binding suck which is normal but I have between .040-.080 concave base the entire length of my Prior 4WD.
Recently invested in some tuning tools but this looks beyond my skills.

I welcome some expert opinions if this is a big deal or not and if I should have a shop fix it, what exactly would I ask them to do? I don't want all my metal edges taken off!

Great optical illusion. My brain assumes the base is flat, and the bar must be bent. Any one else see it like that ?

The bar is on a corner to better let light show under for these pictures.
It is a new high quality true bar and is not bent. Board is concave. Sorry for the confusion. :o

cripes...I got to buy one of those bars.

I read that you should just ignore the divots under the bindings. But, the entire length?? Scary...

Likely just the camera angle/lense...

Assuming the true bar is in fact true... have that board ground. A good repair tech will know when to stop grinding and not sacrifice the life of the board.

I had a severely cupped board at one point and took it for a grind. The tech got it as close to flat as possible without killing the board but did have to leave some "cup" in the base. It ran flat just fine and didn't notice any problems in a carve.

Sometimes this can be caused by not putting a summer/storage coat of wax on for the off season...
There are other causes... just decided to list the reason mine cupped :smashfrea

No need to apologize. I wasn't questioning your true bar, just my vision.

Holy crap, my mind's been blown!

On another note, I'd ride it for a while as it is. It'll probably be a bit catchy at first, but once you start railing a bit on it it seems like it should flatten itself out. I tune my own gear (and my brother and sister-in-law's gear) and I don't think I've ever even seen a concave base, much less one that deep. If you do plan on tuning that out instead of trying to ride it flat, you're not going to be able to tune it flat yourself.

Still, take my advice, or lack there-of, with a grain of salt... I've got a few drinks in me. Plus, even sober I'm sure that a bunch of people would contradict what I had to say.

Thanks for the offer but I have been riding it 2-3 days a week. How long could it take to "ride it flat"? Hey boss "I need an extra day off every week to ride my snowboard flat". ;)

If the low spots are as much as 0.080", I doubt that you could have it ground flat without eliminating your edges. Maybe try to take about half of the cupping out and live with the rest.
