Hey all! I thought I'd share my thoughts on my 171 Stubby now that I've spent a few days on it. Specs are:

The initial wish-list that I sent Bruce looked something like this - I'd like a board that:

Responds well to being ridden aggressively, but doesn't have to be. I like to get my heart pumping the majority of the time, but be able to cruise sometimes in a more relaxed mode.
Has good feedback/feel and liveliness, but is somewhat dampened and grips well on icy crap.
Likes hanging out in long (for Ontario), fast turns, but can be pushed into tighter ones. I'm thinking 12-13m sidecut.
Can be loaded and accelerated from a turn when desired.
Performs well in a variety of conditions, but is biased toward harder snow & ice.
Can be carved on medium-steep terrain as well as shallower runs.
A generally versatile board that leans toward higher performance.
I believe that I got everything I asked for and more! I'll agree with most other reviews about the confidence-inspiring, variable nature of the metal Coilers. The board can be bent into nice tight arcs or long sweepers depending on your mood.

This has been a thrilling change for me - my last eight years of carving were on a Factory Prime... not a bad board, but way too stiff for me and too racy also. After being driven by my board for so long, it is incredible to be completing carves on all of the steepest runs at my local hill - almost regardless of the conditions. The edge grip on ice and torsional stiffness are full-tilt amazing!

At first, I found the board a little too 'quiet', but as I've pushed it harder it continues to surprise me with more liveliness - including popping right out of the snow on fairly hard conditions! (I remember Bruce mentioning that his new boards do still pop - just more from the middle instead of the tail. It is surprising, though, when you're used to it coming from the tail)

There are probably faster, racier boards out there, but for me this is proving to be an incredibly enjoyable, versatile, high-perforance free-carver extraordinaire. I look forward to trying all the other Coilers, (particularly the VSR and monster) as well as the metal Doneks. I am really really pleased with both my board and Bruce - I look forward to working with him again!

16th season carving, no race experience. Past boards include Burton Alp 164 and Factory Prime 173. Current bindings are TD3 Standards with yellow elastomers, 3/3 discs, 58/55 angles, set 20.5" apart. Track 700's with blue spring BTS.

Great write up, it leans me towards a Stubby on my next Coiler, but Monster stills entices me. Angrry has gotten my attention but my POGO OD will due for now.

I have been finding the same here with my Coiler 173 VSR. The more I push it the more it tends to still pop depending on the conditions. I had a Prior 4WD before and if I pushed that it would pop decently.

But the Schtubby doesn't have a variable sidecut, does it? I thought it was just a single-radius board, which made it slightly more predictable/dependable to ride.

That's correct - mine is a single 13.2m radius. The variability of the arc size has more to do with the metal construction. It's my impression (haven't ridden one yet) that a variable sidecut takes that a step further.

Thanks Greg! I look forward to riding the others soon. Yesterday was the first time that I saw the 'Angry' name - I'll have to search it up. Things change fast in Bruce's magic shop :D

I got my first runs on my new schtubby today...after 2 runs on very frim, ice coast conditions in north conway, I enjoyed the way I could load the nose and tail and I had little to chatter. I don't feel like I have my stance dialed in yet and had planned to go one TD2 normal bail in front/one step-in in rear but went with regular heel. I enjoyed the ride but felt already that based on Bruce's builds, I can golonger on my next stick. VSR 180ish. Looking forward to day 2. I love my Coiler!!

How does metal construction help you to vary arc size? Metal construction dampens and smooths the ride. The early-model metal Prior WCR I owned was similar to my glass WCR shape-wise, but the ride benefited from the metal construction. You could change the turn arc by changing the angle of the board on the snow, but the results were consistently similar for similar angles. It was the same as on a glass board, except with a damper feel (and a different flex). Your comment about "tight arcs or long sweepers" has to do with board angle on the snow, not any specific characteristic of the board as far as I know.

People talking about "changing the arc" in relation to newer-tech boards like VSRs or Kesslers or Viruses, etc. are talking about something different AFAIK. You can vary the arc depending on weight and stance placement, and not exactly dependent on the board angle.

Yes, I agree that the edge angle of the board determines most of the turn radius, but there is also the dynamic compression/extension of the rider. What I have found is that this Stubby (and this is the only metal board I've been able to ride yet) bends more under dynamic extension that the previous fibreglass boards that I've ridden. I thought that was the main character difference in metal boards other than the increased torsional stiffness and dampness.

Yes metal does give a different board flex it's true. Again I've only ridden the early Prior metal WCR, which IMO rode similar to the glass boards (i.e. no shape change) except with what I'd suppose you might call "metal characteristics" – which does include flex.

But yeah, I haven't ridden the Schtubby specifically and I don't know what other tweaks Bruce has given them. But I've ridden both glass (Virus) and metal (old Kessler, Coiler) blended-sidecut decambered boards and I feel you'll be pleasantly surprised when you try out one of Bruce's new shapes!

From what I can tell about my Coiler metal AM, its softer from tip to tail and torsional very stiff. This allows the rider or Me to pinch the board and tighten the radius of the arc much easier than any other board I have ridden

My legs are burning after riding BX Salomon FSR and then the Schtub and skiing 5 runs and making it to pick the kiddos up from ski/snowboard school at 3pm. Beat...but a good beat. And now, god bless mother nature, at least a foot or maybe 2 on the way for Friday thru Sunday. Back to the mts. tomorrow nite.:eplus2:
