When we have snow the Basin is some of the best carving groomers in the state. We are very slim on snow right now but come back in March and give us a try. Try Bear Springs run off the Becker chair is one of my favorite because it is not ever crouded. The Olympic downhills off the John Paul chair are steep, wide and usually well groomed. Later in the season of corse. My wife and I have a nice B&B small log cabin in the backyard for rent now and then in Nordic Valley near Powder Mt. and Snowbasin. Gmail me some day for a tour of the Basin.:)

Just checking in here. Trying to get down to Snowbasin later this month.
Howsit?
I know you are still a bit below normal. Carving should be good though?

Also any recommends for lodging ( cheap ) in Ogden?
I ended in a way dirtbag place last time over by Roy. I swear to God the crackheads were up all night and there was a constant stream of cars through the parking lot till the wee hours.

CD try calling the Marriot in Ogden...1 min walk to 25th street.
over the x-mas week the :1luvu: and I had:
king bed suite, flattie, huge real breakfast buffet, two lift tickets, transport to and from snowbasin or powder (what we did), pool, hot tub, small gym- nice place for $200/night everything included. I'm pretty sure that is all season round pricing.

So you had some good carving last week?
I already have tix, so just need a decent place to crash at night that is not a complete dive. Thanks though, if I needed the full meal deal it sounds great.

i had a great time, way better than carving slush at home...strawberry was open intermittently because of thin coverage and wind-the good stuff off john paul quad and peak tram had some rocks, be careful. a lot of man made snow caused some iceing and the locals would just stare at it. i found some stuff off porcupine, midbowl lifts and needles gondi. we got 10" or so on the last day, but they need a few feet more to open up everything.
the longer you wait the better it will get....not sure of the current conditions tho, good luck mon.....

The snowpack is slim here now but the groomers are covered with mainly man made snow (ice for us westcoasters). But the carving is great. The best run for carving is Wildcat Bowl but has not been groomed this year due to the lack of snow and no snowmaking in the area. I have been widening Coyote Bowl over in the Strawberry area and is ready for huge trenching!! The John Paul chair has no groomed runs off of it except for the cat access rd.. The Tram has not been open to the public yet. This makes it hard to get to No Name peak but makes for some great lonely sking there if you are willing to hike. This is my playground area when snowing and the backcountry access is wonderful and is why I moved here from Alta 12 years ago. The Dew Tour is coming here soon and has been using 80% of our snowmaking and the paying public has been suffering :AR15firin:smashfrea Ogden has many places to stay the night. My wife and I have a very quaint, warm log cabin in the back yard. 2 min. to the small Wolf Creek ski area (formally Nordic Valley), 15 min. to Powder Mt., 25 min. to Snowbasin. It is $60 week days, $75 weekends including breakfast. 801-745-3774

So you really are a SB Groomer? Coming from Alta are you ripping the HBs or skiing or ...
That set of bowls that lie to skiers left of the downhill start are awesome. I only made it in there once. Traversed in lower a couple of times. Good fun.
Wildcat is the shizznit for sure. Too bad it is not ready for harvest.
So when you say nothing groomed off the JP chair - does that mean the Women's downhill (wildflower maybe? ) has not been rolled either?
I usually spend my time in the trees on the other side of this but just curious mostly.
And thanks for the snow report. Sure hope we get some soon. Here and there. Everywhere for that matter. Except Buffalo. Such a waste. My wife's family is from there and they get tons ( 7feet I think this winter so far) with no skiable hills around. :smashfrea
I will keep you in mind for the cabin. Pics by chance? And if I heard someone else was heading that way, should I send them your way, or do you try to keep this more lowkey?

es, I am in a snowcat 6 nights a week here at the Basin. I do mainly detail work and try not to roll with the pack. Try to keep the runs flat seeing they kept the terrible Sunvalley idea of putting the snow guns in the middle of the runs! Still no grooming off the JP side. No snow. There is a multimillion system up there but it costs $ to keep the public happy so that's out. Carving on the groomers is still worthy! I use both an old PJ for body sliding and some wonderfully powerful Fisher 9+ skies for laying train track rails. Hope for snow because this is getting old. I want to break out the Volkl Katana's with Duke binders for the backcountry soon!!

Awesomeness. I look forward to meeting you. Hope I get the chance this winter. I agree with what a duma$$ idea it is/was to put the guns right in the middle. Unfathomable to me really. I know it's easier to run the water line that way but Good God, that doesn't make sense from a skiing or grooming point of view. Looks like you might be in line to get some soon.
Let's hope so.

Hi I go to SLC regularly for some construction work and am wondering which of the close in hills are best for carving - Park City, Canyons, Snowbird, Solitude...? Thanks!!

For me its Park City for a few reasons one of which is the grooming. I have a pass there so next time you are coming through shoot me an email and we can get out and make some turns.

Will,
How's the cover nowadays at PC? We're planning a group trip (weekend of Feb 5-7) and still have a choice between PC/Canyons and Solitude/Snowbird side of staying. Have you heard of the April Inn on Main? If we go to the Sol/SB side we would probably be staying in Cottonwood Hts. Is it viable to be staying in PC and drive to Solitude? Have you heard about the snow conditions at Solitude? We'll definitely be going to PC on the 5th for the Fly and Ski deal but not sure of the rest of the time. Thanks for your help!

Kelvin,
I just got down from PC, the snow was great for alpine but a lot less than we are used to. I think that the forecast is calling for snow the next 7 out of the next 10 days or so. Where to stay is really best answered by someone else as I couldn't give you the best advice. Hope this helps.

Hows the basin looking? I know you had to get something out of this last round of storms but still nothing groomed off the John Paul chair.
This would be where the Wildflower would be listed yes?
Not that I am interested in the groomers there as much as an indication of whats going on.

SO will be riding PCMR on Friday, Snowbird or Solitude on Saturday, and probably PCMR again on Sunday before I have to go back to work on City Creek. Any suggestions on particular runs to take/avoid or where to hang in PC apres-ride?
I've already shipped my Coiler and 4807. Does the groomed stuff soften up and get cut up enough to ride the 4807 even if there aren't any freshies to be had?
Anyone riding this weekend and if so you guys have a radio frequency that you go to? thanks for any thoughts on the matter. Can't wait to ride "the greatest snow on earth"!
