Sunny and cold. Soft groom over HARD pack, very nice. Got to explore the Jeff Flood lift for the first time. Kruzer is pretty fun, the upper part is some sweet bank riding.:biggthump Tomorrow looks the same.:)

Thanks for the update Galen, talked to Ross (http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=7162), I think he and his family are going up next Sunday. Sunday's are not nearly as busy there as at MHM?
I think we have a week of clear, sunny and HARD. Sure glad we have the base to use up. Are any rocks popping up yet?
Did you get through to Jim?
"Jeff Flood" definitely adds allot to the ski area. Nice that it is lower and a LONG high speed chair too.
Have fun!! Photos please, (not of you :freak3:, your family riding and Tline :biggthump )

Got a condo on the golf course in Welches, cant check in until the 4th. Yup, we all got the Fusion, I'll probably get mid week passes for MHM for me and Ariel as we will be up here the most. Mario Schooling full time and Sylvan working part time. Where did I go wrong?

Sunny, good groomers early, but suddenly got real crowded on the lower mt around 10:30. Got on the Mile, was good until about noon when it got very soft. Was 44 in the parking lot when we left, 34 down at Govvy. Nice inversion layer! Tommorow should be much the same.

Whoowee!
I wasn't expecting much when I went up on a last minute whim today, but managed to get up to T-line early enough for first tracks.
Was the second person in line at Stormin' Normin' when they opened it. Cut boarder's right at the top and took on Kruzin. Oh. My. God. Hero cord all the way down. Probably one of the best mornings I've ever had on Hood. Proceeded to attack Stormin' Normin' and Mustang Sally all morning, whoopin' and hollerin' the entire time like a fool. :1luvu:
Of course, the fun stopped once the crowds arrived and the surface got all tracked out, still managed to find some smoother areas under the lifts. Around 11:30 the rain started and that's when I decided to call it quits.
Usually I'm a MHM kinda guy, but man, this morning at T-line was an eyeopener. I think that T-line does a better job of grooming, there were no grooming ruts or shelves in sight.
Sam.

My Coiler AM metal 177.
Man it was sweet.
I had picked up enough confidence after run #2 that I felt like the board was a little too tight for me, turning radius wise... almost made me want to try that pure race of yours again.
Oh, and I picked up that rad air tanker 192 from Brent btw... should be coming tomorrow! :eplus2:

I've been pleased with T-Lines grooming this year also. Have found it to be better and more consistant from one run to another then Bach was last year. I'm starting to warm up to the place. Bryan, how's MHM been? Thinking about getting a mid-week pass for there. Ariel, Silvan and I will be at T-Lne tues-thurs.:)

Yes, the new runs really help too. I have not been up to MHM during the Holidays, so far this year they have had some good days and some bad.
I would dare say they are on par with Bachelor or maybe better considering our snow is not typically as good. (dry)
Is the mid week a good deal? The full 450$ (early season) is hard to beat.
Love to see you come over to MHM during the week. I typically have been riding Mon, Tues, or Wednesday this year. Just got past another permit inspection on the house so I am anxious to ride. Sounds like warm and wet this entire week. Bummer on that note.

the forecast makes it look like T-Line wont get much in the way of rain this week. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=pqr&smap=1&textField1=45.344583333333&textField2=-121.70625 Midweek pass for MHM is 500, full is now 900. I missed out on the early season deal, was waiting to see how the season was going to shape up as the long range forecast was dodgy. Still, 975 for all 3 mts (Fusion and late season midweek@MHM) is on par with a full bachelor pass. Oh yeah, and my new VSR f-ing rocks!:1luvu:

MHM base lodge is about 5300 IIRC, and TLine base lodge is about 5950... not much of a difference.
Assuming that Cascade @ MHM and Magic Mile @TLine are either both open or both closed, the top elevation of both areas on a given day are within 300' of each other.
The bottom of Molly's and Flood at TLine are about 4900' - which is almost exactly halfway between the bottom of HRM and bottom of MHX at Meadows.
Bottom line: If anything, your average elevation riding at TLine during the winter is a shade lower than your average elevation at Meadows during winter. Of course once Palmer opens (and the lower lifts close) then TLine's riding is much higher.
When the wind is blowing from the west TLine is more in the line of fire and when the wind blows from the north Meadows is. Also when the wind is coming from the west sometimes the east slopes of the Cascades get cooled due to cold air trapped below warm air and sometimes this keeps Meadows cooler than TLine. Not now though... the cooling effect isn't getting up high enough. For example it's warmer at Bachelor than in Bend right now. It's a good week to be swamped at work...

Yep, I was hoping it would come down sooner and snow early. Didn't happen, at least as of 3am when I checked last, then called at 5:45am for first snow report. Didn't sound good, went back to bed. Try again Thursday. Been a hard post holiday let down.
It will return, looking forward to the turns again.
Thanks for the reports.

We did sneak in a pretty fun day on Thursday. It was icy and poor vis but we found HRM was pretty smooth and made the best of it.

Erin and I hiked up to the midstation of Palmer on Sunday. It started partly sunny, but the clouds started getting lower, and by the time we got to the midstation of Palmer (which wasn't running), we couldn't see the top of the chair.
The descent was kind of meh up top, but pretty fun lower down. I'm clumsy as hell in softboots (until this season, hadn't worn them in 5 or 6 years), but conditions were probably the bigger issue. It was very icy up top, to the point that I could imagine falling and sliding all the way to the bottom of Palmer, and I couldn't carve any turns. Once we got lower, it was warm enough that there was a layer of corn/slush on top of the ice, which was not great but decently carvable.
It was fun enough once we hit the softer stuff that I would have gone for another run if I wasn't so tired out from the first climb. I should work on my softbooting skills (and board setup), but I have a splitboard on the way, so may not be hiking in my softies too much in the future.
Oh yeah, and the point of this post: Tline needs more snow! Looks like it will get some this week - hope so.

Are you running the yellow pads in your TD3SW bindings??
Do you really eat Tatura butter?
Did you take that photo?
How many runs did you get in?
Have you been to Mt Bachelor yet?
Did you have Bruce mount a rubber bumper strip all around your new snowboard?
Do you have an FRS radio?
When do you plan to go up next?
Yes, I am just being silly now.

Pretty day, grooming was a bit "gravelly" though. Mile was soft early, also "rubbley". Still, better then a kick in the pants.:) got foggy about noon, kindaa strange.

Thanks Galen. Pretty much ditto at MHM.
Firm in the am. So-so grooming, south facing pitches softened nicely. Cascade had the best potential, the snow was lighter and drier. Grooming was not very wide on my favorite runs or non-existant.

It was a little weird, like a gravel road,3/4-1 1/2 inch chunks, though they werent frozen solid. With Skibowl out of the loop this year, t-line's statrting to feel small. looking forward to my MHM spring pass kicking in! Take care of that leg! Have you tried Topricin? Much better IMO for localized pain/soreness then IB or other over the counter stuff.

Galen, I was using some of the same words :( "Ice Cubes" , "Gravel" etc)
It was a game of knowing where the best conditions typically are and finding the "Good Parts" of those runs. The upper mountain had the best, driest snow, however the grooming was lacking. My favorite today was again Shooting Star Ridge. It was the smoothest and chalky surface until the last 1/4 of the run where it turned to gravel.
I will try Topicin, I will try anything. I looked it up and it sounds more topical? My pain is inside the leg, might have something to do with the 15" rod and many screws.
Thanks for the tip.

Today was cold and snow showers. Occasional glimpses of blue sky, they were fleeting at best. Cold dry snow, groomers had 1 - 4" on them. Trees and out of the way areas lots of powder left over from yesterday (10")
Light lift lines in late morning.
Don't forget to rip old Pucci a few times, the chair is closed but you can get back to Jeff Flood with a little planning.
Not sure if I can make it Thursday or Friday. You may be the only alpine riders there. I was :( The Coiler "Headhunter" ruled the mixed surfaces, carved hard on the soft groomers and made quick work of some low angle, high speed powder runs.

Man, laying around and healing is getting boring!

Hi Galen, wondered what happened to your tribe?
On the days that have gotten snow, it has been pretty slick. Plowed and rocked but still a bit tricky at times. Chains or Snow Tires have been required allot this past couple weeks. Typically driving down the snow is melting. Today was pretty easy leaving, slick this am (beat the sander up the access road)
Friday will be an epic day. Kram and friends should have a super day.

It is day by day of course. We had snow down to Sandy on Wednesday morning, made for a slush hydroplane drive session. It was all but gone on the way back down at 1PM.
Yesterday the Timberline road was snow covered and slick, however it was fine if you took it easy. The gravel truck had not made his pass yet (he was right behind us at 7:50am. :freak3:
Sounds like a couple days of clearing and then back to some weather next week. Hope you get some more powder!! It has been pretty darn good. :biggthump

You fell off the lift? How did that happen? Was it windy?

The bottom of the seat tips forward so they can dump the snow off of it, there is a little safety latch that is supposed to be clipped to the back of the seat. I decided to clip my back foot in with my right hand while holding onto the back of the seat with my left. This particular chair never had the safety latch clipped on, so when I snapped my boot in the seat lifted up and dumped me out. Luckily I landed face down like a gingerbread man so the impact was spread out over my entire body. It really freaked the lifties out, they made me sign a bunch of waivers. I kept riding but could barely move the next day. I'm a fan of chairs with safety bars.

That's bizarre! I don't remember ever noticing a chair that tips forward - all the ones I've noticed are hinged at the back. Apparently for a good reason!
THose hinged at the back can be slammed against the seatback to bust off the crusted ice, if the liftie is reasonably quick or has a helper for the first few laps in the morning. If the liftie doesn't deal with it, the riders can give it a slam while disembarking at the top. I like to flip up the seat at the top on the last ride so the liftie doing it can catch a little break. They always seem to appreciate it.
Bryan - Sorry I didn't make it down last weekend. We had a couple of trees damaged in a windstorm last week and the garage door spring broke the same day, so I had extra chores to deal with. 'Fraid I'm done for the season. See you next year, I hope.

The snow report sounded a bit iffy. Sprinkles and cloudy all the way up, nearly to the parking lot. Then clear blue sky!! Very light turnout too!! Couple inches of new. Palmer opened. Nice day!! Randy K was the only other alpine rider I saw , although I did see a guy with a Kessler BX board and his friend could really carve their softies.

You will have to tell me about what all happened some time. Rob used to race, like 10 years ago. I had hoped he would make it up today, but didn't. I made plans for Wednesday so I can go. I have a video from today I can post in a few minutes. Randy King was nice enough to operate the camera , so I have some segments of me actually riding :freak3:
Still allot of chair lift footage, hoping it will be of interest to someone. Perhaps those that have not been up to Timberline's Palmer or maybe some of my old friends like Ed that would like a little reminder.

Might head up to TLine one day over the weekend of May 22-23 if the weather holds. Then again might way till they start opening earlier, so it's firmer longer.

another great day, got softer a little sooner though. Palmer and the mile got soft early, but still very ridable until around 11. they had the left side of the mile groomed all the way to the western boundry. Sweet. If the weather continues to warm up, waiting for the early opens would be a good idea. Traffic has been light until about 10:30 when the parkies start to show up, but the are mainly down on Normans.

Galen, my guess is that was Randy King. He is an old friend of Mike's and had that full TNT system board built a year or so ago. Super nice guy, sorry you did not get a chance to meet him. Glad you and your's had a good time at Tline.

Yes, exactly. Summer is big business at Timberline. Makes the daily pass seem down right reasonable? It was a great spring season this year. more like an extended winter season really. Lots of fresh snow days.
Now I just watch as the groups of "Campers" move through the airport. The camp vans coming and going. Hope they all have a great summer season.
I finally took the boots out of the truck. More than likely done for the season.
