I wasn't carving or even riding much the last time El Niņo was in town. I'm googling its effects on the Sierra and people said there was a lot of snowfall last time around. Do you think we have an insane season coming up? I just hope the Sierra gets dumped on because I've never ridden in more than 1.5' of powder, ever. Maybe I should put the Coiler on hold and get a powder board :D

No man. Wrong idear. Sell your powder boards, order up 4 or 5 NSR patterns. Please don't **** this up for everyone else just so you can be ready for a big winter. Please.

I guess it's good for those in SoCal but crappy for those in the PNW?

I wonder how this will affect the Vancouver games.

I expected the recent powder cycle around here to be short lived:(
but as long as we get enough snow to refresh the groomers between bouts of sunshine, the vetran cat jockeys at schwietzer will keep us cord killers smiling:eplus2:
at least the powder drought will keep the meat gates to a minimum:biggthump

Last I recall chasing the El Nino and La Nina -- I stayed behind in my home turf -- New Mexico. We got sh*tload of snow that winter, even the forest rangers said theyve never seen that much snow in past 20 years.
Next following year, I heard La Nina was gonna pound, so I moved to the PNW promptly and we got insane amount of snow. Hell, I was even at Mt Baker the year they broke all records, 98-99. It was ... alot of snow.
Ever since then, I've decided I'll stick around to CO and I admit I'm a bit too jaded when people go "oooo, POWDER! Hey, lets go ride!" "naw, man, I'll run my errands, etc."
And no I'm not kidding or being egoistical, I only can tell you what I experienced.

Lee, is this due to your work on the mountain or the fact that the powder gets pounced on so hard?

I'm 90% sure about that.
Tried the archives of Ski Southeast site but couldn't find confirmation. Mebbe MelloYellow can shed some light on this?

Another good reason for you and the Possum Posse to come out to SoCal!

Montana in January, Califrisco in March...
David's school quarters don't mesh well with BMES/WFES, but his March spring break should coincide with maxed out snowpack for SoCal (?)
Be great if I could solo los Montanas & then surfari Socal with my son later in the season. California has so thoroughly blown my mind every time I've been out there - want the young'un to see at least some of it while he's impressionable and excitable. (Come to think of it, he'll probably be excitable when he's 90...)
Hope you guys made it up to Mammoth in June!
Will stay in touch re early spring possibilities.

Hmmm....
2008/09 season was La Nina, supposedly wet, which didn't result in too stellar of a season, here...
2007/08, El Nino, supposedly dry, gave us one of the greatest seasons ever. I think I rode my pow boards more then the carvers.

Hi Loc
check out this link
http://webpages.charter.net/tcrocker818/
Scroll down the page to the "History of Southern California Snow Conditions"
Look at the 97/98 and the 82/83 seasons, both good El Nino seasons.
I rode Mt Baldy on the Memorial day(May 25th 1998) and Mammoth on the last day of June. Baldy had good coverage on Thunder Mt. and was open till the end of May I believe.
Check out the May reports for '98 on this one (3 ft of new snow in May)!

Googled "El Nino Souteastern U.S." If I'm interpreting the graphs right, El Nino winter precip is usually elevated in our NW mountains and the piedmont. And average temperatures are a couple degrees colder than normal.
OK. I'm all wet. And our winter may not be!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but I'll take a guess on what you're asking.
I took desert ecology class with an emertius professor at New Mexico State University back in 96 or so, and you can imagine how big my eyes popped out when I listen to the professor's speech on explosion of mice due to massive growth (i.e. lots of diseases for the native americans according to the shaman's forecast). I purely saw it from snowsports perspective. He commented on how wet/moisture would be saturated considering the climate call of El Nino in the southwest. So I decided to take a spring semester off and he pretty much is accurate with the forecast. So I decided to research on La Nina, when I was doing research on climatology forecast via NOAA. They have an excellent climate forecast with preciptation and temperature.
If you'd like, I could find the link to the visual maps of entire US with median temperature/preciptation ?

Hopefully the snow will be nice and firm when you make it out here, it should be killer in the Sierras.
Rumor has it March is the deepest snowpack, but that's only consistent in the Sierras. We had the deepest pack on Christmas day!
We haven't made another trip to Mammoth since late May, but we've been doing plenty of hikes around the local mountains.
George- Speaking of local mountains, we checked out the site of the former diesel poma at North, holy crap that's a pile of nice terrain! It's like chair 23 down there! I've emailed and called John McCoy about the possibility of slapping in a used chairlift (like they did with the East quad) in that spot. He hasn't responded but I always run into him when he's walking between the bar near Snowflake and the main West lodge so I'll talk to him then.

If by "hay day" you mean that you can see straw sticking up on the runs because of below normal precipitation, then yes, you are correct sir!
