Hey all,
Shred and Cuban, I always head out to Colorado a week before SES...It's been my secret to ride Summit County to aclimate prior to heading into Aspen....Thus the comment on tying the two trips together..So the last week in January suits me well....
I will adjust to whatever dates work out...you guys know that already. I would like to hook up with dredman and johnasmo if they decide on the dates though.
Just got back from camping in Watertown Park(alberta/ BC / US line)...and hiking on the glaciers, hmmm Montana was so close....
It's gonna ba a long summer at this rate.
Dr D
July 13th, 2009, 03:05 PM
johnasmo hardly misses a day on the mtn all season. hooking up with him isn't a challenge:lol: Dredman is no longer local but is relatively close I would think he has some flexibility. Hard to say till they all check in I guess.
any of those weeks works for me. I just need a month or so lead time to get the extra days off.

I have nothing against the Sausage Extravaganza - I really hope to make it some day soon, if just to observe the notorious hot tub sessions. But I've already been to Aspen/Snowmass (back when I was in shape and Snowmass alone could have kept me busy for a couple of weeks, even then), and I'm trying to keep completely new experiences/places on my "Top 15 Things to do Before..." list.
Boarding Montana will surely be near the top of the list (along with seeing Big Mario do his subtle mountain samba at Loveland...).
Trying to B.S. less on BOL since I've not started so many projects I'd "announced" on here. But when you guys come up with probable date(s?) for BMES (er WFES), I'll start plotting, scheming, and saving shekels in an earnest attempt to make it.
Based on Doc's recent commentary about the local "public servants", this southern hothead has some concerns about getting past the border checkpoints, but where there's a will...
(First) meeting Mellow Yellow outside Possum's Pouch would be a hoot, and what hardbooter's career would be complete without meeting the co-conspirator (designer?!) of der Schtump, I mean der Schtubby. (Think that's Shred...?)
Finally, to me, westcarven's running commentary has always been one of the most enjoyable things on the Forum.
So I'll watch this thread with much interest.
Big pool of cold air in the Northeast extends down into the hills of Western Possum's Pouch. Supposed to be 57 F in Boone tonight... just 3+ hours away... hmmm

Howdy to the Big Mtn/Whitefish folks... I've not been around your clan, but need somewhere to head to this season. I wish I could get to SES for my 1st time ever but it won't happen for me this year (again). But I really need to get together with some carvers. I'm strongly considering taking the train to Whitefish for BMES. If I could find some good people willing to share lodging costs I'd be a WTF'er for sure. I'm pretty easy going as long as you don't leave the garage door open when all my gear is right there for the taking when some doofus walks by.

Allee, I should be around all of Jan, and we can talk Dave into coming up whenever you are here. When the BMES was the week before SES, Dave's plan was to come up to the Fish and then we'd road trip together to SES (with a stop at Targhee of course). Now the SES has been pushed to Feb 7 - 12, so those looking to do a week at the Fish and then SES should now be looking at the first week of Feb. If more people are here in January, then Dave will probably come up for that and then we'll meet up again in Idaho falls on the way to SES. I guess that'll work better for car shifting anyway so I'm not stranded in Idaho Falls on the return.

Been to Aspen, so want to do los Montanas, also SoCal (King Crimson & crew) & Mammoth before SES.
And then, of course, there's ECES, but thusfar have seen no movement for a Beech Mtn. venue per Mello Yello's suggestion. (Don't know why. If the snow sucks, we could always drive 350 mi. for OBX kiteboarding. That'd be some caravan ...)

First Tracks? Hardly. There are seriously freaky snow junkies in these parts. It's hard to keep up with them. Last Saturday (the 24th) there was a mountain bike track in the snow at the summit. It looked like a single ski track (see photo) except for the tread marks on the sides. I met a guy hiking up on Monday (without bike), who confirmed it was his bike track. Monday (the 26th) was the first sign of a skier. Someone put climbing skins on starting at the Bench Run, and skied off the back side, probably hiking out on Russ's Street. It snowed Monday night so I was finally willing to give it a go on Tuesday, but even then another (or same) skier skinned from the bottom where there was only an inch or two and again went off the back side and out Russ's Street. He was finishing as I was starting, so I guess that makes me Third Tracks. Maybe next year. At least I was first tracks for riding on the front side. Hail Tony, maximum Matt! You don't need to stay on Jeep trails when you've got PBR base.
As for the music, I actually did hear that on the way up and thought it would make a decent soundtrack for the day -- lighten things up given the wet, foggy conditions. Lately I've been letting iTunes "genius" feature create playlists for me. Pick a few songs, make genius playlists from them, dump them on an old school MP3 player and rock on. That tune ("19-200" by Gorillaz) was put on a playlist spawned from the White Stripes "Fell In Love With A Girl". Go figure. I didn't even know I had it; I got it from dredman, and he got it from some guy in Vegas... all first hand fair use, of course.

If past BMES is any indication of future BMES, it will be a half dozen (or less) out-of-towners on top of the half dozen (or less) local carvers. We'll still all fit at one table at the Hellroaring Saloon.
This thread is as much a Big Mountain community thread for the resort locals and its visitors as it is about any specific dates. Basically, "BMES" is whenever the Cleveland crew shows up.
Lake Louise and Sunshine Village are about a 5 hour drive from Whitefish; the town of Banff a little longer. You're welcome to check it out, but the SES in Aspen is the real deal -- a carving convention, orders of magnitude more impressive, a destination event, accept no substitutes...

energyrail (not sure what that means but it is unique) - not that I have been to this one but this is a bunch of guys getting together to ride at a great mountain. Dr D, dredman, johanasmo and west carven are all local guys up there - then a bunch from Cleveland and points east show up. No organized demos of gear. More just riding with rippers. At least from what I can gather. Been trying to make it up there for a couple years now. The mountain is awesome for a mix of carving and pow. It can be limited visibility at times. Hopefully that is when there is a foot of fresh and you can head to the trees.
The last time I was there the grooming was great - hopefully that has not changed.
This is NOT a SES event. Just some hard booters at A great mountain.

I first used the tag on ebay. It is refering to the first pair skis i bought on there "volkl p40 fl energyrail".

Only 5 hours from banff. hmm. i'm 9 hours from banff. but only 8 from calgary, if I take a different road.
Oh by the way the town of banff is 45 minutes south of sunshine and louise.
Is anybody from calgary area making the drive?
Allee
October 29th, 2009, 01:29 PM
I've made the drive from Calgary three times, it's a pretty mellow trip. The only bit that might get a bit dicey is the span between Fernie and the US border - for some reason that piece of road always gets a bit gnarly midwinter. I can be out of the south of Calgary, across the border (with all the associated BS of having a New Zealand passport) and in Whitefish in six hours.
Probably won't be making these dates this year, but plan on making the trip at least once this winter.

Hey do you mind sharing what type of cam, editing software etc you use.
Asmo's Recipe for Smooth and Tasty Video Treats
Ingredients:
Camera (Canon Powershot SD1100 Digital Elph)
VirtualDub (Free video processing software)
Deshaker (Free VirtualDub plug-in for stabilizing video)
Pinnacle Studio (non-linear video editing software)
Instructions:
Leave home and do something you love, preferably involving snowboards
Pull camera from pocket and take 5 to 10 second clip of whatever you are doing
Repeat step 1 frequently until you are done doing what you are doing
Return home
Upload videos to a computer
Append all the clips using VirtualDub
Stabilize the whole mess using deshaker video filter
Save consolidated and stabilized video as a new file
Open in movie editing software of your choice
Remove and discard fat
Add spicy soundtrack
Save movie and allow an hour to upload to youtube
Your tasty video treat is now ready to consume
It's a simple recipe, and all the ingredients are cheap, but it does take a lot of time to prepare. The deshaker video filter works in two passes, one pass to analyze the motion in the video, and the second pass to compensate for the motion. It's highly configurable in each pass, and it took a while to come up with settings I liked. I can share the settings I use if you want to give it a go.

There's been a ice shell over the mountain all week, but once you get used to the noise, it really ain't so bad. The Face is actually riding pretty well in spite of it.

I think it was a rain event. I was out of town for a few weeks, and it was there when I returned. I'd been watching the snowcams, so whatever happened, I know the snow was only a couple days old when I got back. Snow has a way of transforming each day. Constant metamorphosis. On Sunday and Monday the ice layer was there, and the snow underneath was heavy, but as the week went on and the temps got lower, the ice layer got more brittle and the snow underneath seemed to be drying out. Either that or I was just getting used to it...

was a pretty fun opening day, only chair 7 on the backside was open.
still, better than last years opening day, the runs were well filled and
hardly any gremlins. last run on russ street only way down or download
on chair 1. looking around as i was on russ street the coverage is still
thin, needs three feet plus of snow. it was dumping all day and there
was about four inches of new snow. rode my burton amp5 rock board
with 3 straps softies. i still love this board its like a little skateboard.
i can rail this thing but its so squirrely cant push it to hard, so much fun...

West, didn't see you out there. Maybe because of the strap-ins. Rick has a red coat this year. I'm still yellow on orange (think lemon atop a traffic cone). We hard booted the AM, then I went soft the rest of the day, and Rick went to watch the Griz game. I tried Dave's old Renntiger GS 173 and actually liked it; maybe I won't sell it right away...
Best opening day snow in a few years. I was expecting a lot of man-made snow/ice, but we got 4 to 5 inches overnight, so it was good.

left for the mountain around 9:30am it started to snow in town

piling up. its around 7pm and theres 4plus inches of very fine snow.

what a difference a day makes. for rhyme and reason it was warm today
and ice build up on goggles, foggy, wet heavy feeling of the snow. it was
not a good day to be on the hill. i think it was the warm part of a cold front from the pacific. it brought a few snow tonight. not too many people
on the hill today, not much new snow. rode my rock/pow softies and

stashes. this warming just adds for a good solid base. things are
getting better. rode the 156 fish which is great in the fresh stuff

left for the big. i was with a newbie today for a few runs. i think he
needs to get used to the hardboots and find what is comfortable in

today was a busy day on the hill with a demo tent with skis and jib
boards. alot of weekend warriors and high school is on winter break.
it will be a zoo the next few weeks with the holiday season. as far as
snow condition today it was somewhat spring like conditions. the snow
was getting a little chunky with the warm temps and the fog was down
at the top of chair 2. i did not go on chair 1 today so dont know how

merry christmas all, it was a great beautiful day on the hill.
after the past week of warm weather things finally cooled down
and dried some of the ice. today we had everything, bluebird on top
and with an inversion we had snow below, snowed a good two inches
on chair 2. as the day ended so did the inversion and everything
back to normal. the groomers carved great but got a little bumpy
with the new snow. it was the perfect weather conditions today,
snow on the bottom half which helped the man-made snow makers,
just what the mountain needed. should be clear tonight so tomorrow
should be very good. i think it will be very busy tho. rode my rsfp167

pretty much the same as yesterday, valley inversions, lite snow
bluebird on top half. a little bit busier today but not so bad on the

it was on the firm side today and was skiing fast, people at all levels
on the hill made it hard to find your space. it will be a zoo the next

Hey West! Been following your posts on condtions and I began to wonder what runs are favored. I've been checking out the trail maps and found Ed's and chair 2 that you've mentioned. I'm a little concerned about what I've gotten myself into.
Don't worry..... you'll have your locals, but there will also be plenty of those mid-west (or even Hawaian or North Carolianian) folks who find themselves on vacation! Several years back I rode with PaulK early in the week and we rode until the end of the day, but most of the guys are on vacation and ready for a leisurely pace. Last time I was there (not last season, but the year before.... January 08) there was so much powder that real carving wasn't an option. You really never know what you are going to get, but you just make the best of what mother nature provides and deal with it! That's Montana!!!! If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change.
bjvircks
January 4th, 2010, 08:18 PM
I guess what I'm concerned about is what appears to be constant overcast. It just didn't dawn on me that one of Shred's tee shirt designs with the cloud obscured mountain was right on target. I am hoping for days where I don't have to contend with flat light and limited visability.

this year we have been getting large storm fronts that drag alot of
warm pacific air that gets pulled up from the south west, then gets
cold as it drags cold air from the north west. so when we get the
warm stuff we get alot of foggy days. we had a few days of inversions
were its sunny on the top half of the mountain and the cloud level sits
in the valley. as far as good carving runs, eds run on chair 2 or toni matt
on chair 1 thats pretty wide. the northside (backside) chair 7 for mellow
blue runs. it would be a good idea to bring a powder board with your
carving gear. you get what mother nature gives.

I think we've had great carving snow for a whole week now. The last real pow day we had was Tuesday the 5th, and each day since the groomers have carved better and better. Last week they were still pretty soft so they got choppy by afternoon, but the last couple of days I've stayed on carving gear until last chair. Temps are warming up now, so it could all go down the crapper until the next dump, but we'll just take each day as it comes. I hope the BMES week has snow conditions as good as we've had the last 4 days; it's been a trench fest. Flat light, but great snow.
New video just in. I had a friend visit for a few days after Christmas and got some video of something rarely seen on Big Mountain in December and January, sunshine, so here's a BMES teaser video. My buddy's not a carver, but there are some shots of me hard booting at 3:40 and 7:50 (mm:ss) into the video. It's the Shred Groomer Violator 188 doing Ptarmigan Bowl in the first clip, then a 169 4WD doing Ed's and Toni in the second clip.

In other news, we had a skier-carver collision on the mountain a few days ago. Score skier 0, carver 1. Rick took out someones tib/fib with his Giro full face helmet. The guy didn't even see him, thought he must have been hit from behind, but the break was clearly from the side and he rolled over Rick after impact. It was within 50 yards of where I got hit last year, but that time I was the one that ended up in the ER (score skier 1, carver 0).

Kurt, I do teach, but I don't know how much I'd be able to help you! I'd be happy to give you tips on basics, but it won't take long before you're better than me, I'm sure!
I've been in touch with an instructor from there that I'm hoping to catch up wiith some on Thursday for a run or two. I emailed him and told him I was going to be there to ride with a bunch of carvers.... his response? "Maybe I'll have to dig my hard boots out of the basement!" ha He is a DCL (one step lower than examiner) for AASI in the northwest division.
Anyway, I'd be happy to help if I can, but I won't be riding until Wednesday and I'm sure by then you'll have it all figured out!
Kathy
I don't know if Steve is going to be heading up, but he'd be a good one to get help from too. He's an awesome instructor!

Hi All Dawn and I expect to be arriving Friday 22, early afternoon.
Hey LOCALS... where are the gear lockers for skis and boards located? We plan on getting a locker at the hill for storing our gear so we don't have to lug it back und forth on the bus. Also... we need to go to a ticketing office somewhere to get our "frequent Skier" cards finalized. Where is this office? I'm guessing both the office and the lockers are up at the village.
It looks like the best place to get off the bus would be the village unless there is some reason to be at the base lodge. Right?

I think if your looking for your photo ID.. It "USED" to be in the village across from the Beer stube.. But Call since the recent renovations.. a lot has been moved to the base lodge.. parking down below is a good choice as I believe the beginner chair that takes you up to the village is Free and I believe it starts early.. but it doesn't hurt to call ..so much has changed with recent development.

yes, cuban is correct, everything at the baselodge. the snow bus from
whitefish first stop is the baselodge so get off there. the ticket office
and rentals are in the second level and lockers are on the bottom where
the bus lets you off. on the top level there is the snack shop and dinning
area with a little bar and restrooms, this opens up to chair 6 which used
to be free, this will take you up to chair 1 and chair 2. chair 1 will take
you to the top and theres chair 7 the northside (backside). a good place
to meet is by chair 2 or the top of chair 1. if you see any hardbooters
just introduce yourselfs. theres only a handful of us and are expecting
you all. safe travels and pray for good groomers... see you soon...

From the bus schedule that's posted it looks like I can get to the base lodge in the afternoon of arrival (expect to get to town approx 2:30) and get the pass & locker stuff taken care of. The next day its RIDE RIDE RIDE.
Will the bus pick up/drop folks if they are not at one of the offically designated stops? We are a short walk from 2 stops (between Ice Rink and Lodge at Whitefish)

This marks my 15 years of going to the Big..it may be more but i lost track..
One thing I like taking is pictures so people have an idea what its like. I can't lie the fog. thats a real thing... but once you know the mountain... how cool is it that you ...even when blue bird you don't see a single soul..
For most its a long trip to get to. but this place is truely a local BIG place.. all to your own.. so even when its bad.. its great..
Weather looks like we are hitting it a perfect time temps are dropping. I wil try to show you some good photos,, any special requests.. just let me know and I'll post them.

Hey Shred . 15 YEARS ??? Holy Cow! Wow. Just... Wow.
I know that at my small hill I cruise around my 'good' runs to feel out the groom, etc before charging into it. With what I anticipate to be consistent flat light at BM, I'm concerned about really getting to know any specific run on the mountain. Whatever... it's the Drambuie talking.
Hope I don't offend any carvers out the there who may be of the Hindu persuasion with my HOLY COW comments. (but I must admit... they are tasty)

Carving was good this afternoon. Smooth and fast right up to last chair. Mostly flat light but a few rays of sun near the end. Looks like tomorrow will be even better, maybe even sunny. Anyone going to be here in time to take some runs tomorrow? I'll be up in the afternoon, and I'll stick around for night skiing. The night skiing runs 4:00 - 8:30 PM and is only $16 if you want to get some sunset turns in. Find me at the lifts if you want a first hand snow report before buying in. I'll be in a lemon (yellow) helmet and traffic cone (orange) jacket; hard to miss.
There's a bunch of snow hitting the west, but it looks like it will mostly be south of here or east of the divide. Snow is predicted for Saturday, but only a little, and then probably clear again on Sunday. Should be some good carving to start things off. See you soon.

so i went up to the big to return the neck brace and got the report
from the baselodge clinic and then went to the hellroaring to see if
the boys were there and they were. i got there in time to order lunch
with them. it was nice to see the boys again. it was hard to see them
leave with there boards and carve away, wish i could have straped
mine on. aparently i was walking with my board by ed and mullys
restaurant going to catch the bus when a friend tom taught it was
weird that i was going home so soon. he notice i had a cut and was
disoriented so he left me in the hands of some ambassadors i guess
they took me to the clinic. i will talk to them later and find out what
i can. still dont know how long i was out on the hill and i must have
walked down some. anyways, after i left the boys at lunch, i went
to watch the little kids race. it was 5 to 12 years old, it was fun,
the little ones were so cute and fearless, some of the older kids
were really good. had a great day even tho i was not boarding...
oh yeah, snow conditions looked good, a little fresh over groom...

I am suprised they did not notice his orange coat with a yellow helmet. Kind of looks like a traffic cone with a lemon on top.

Could have been me. I'm usually on orange UPZ RTRs, but a week ago (weekend of the 16th) I got out the old red UPZ RSVs to check out my "backup" boots. I have more than one fin-tec (spare parts are good if you don't like downtime), so I put them on the RSVs, fixed some broken buckles, threw in some old Raichle liners and gave it a try. Conclusion: I much prefer the softer black tongues and Flo liners that come on the newer UPZs.
However, the "New Dave" here in town also has red boots and a 4WD, and Rick rides red-ish ski boots. Could have been one of them, though I prefer to think it was me "smoking it up." :)

nothing hard just tipped over, still not a good thing. the conditions are
still spring like and more warm temps in the forcast. rode my 160 speed

"snort" Canada needs its fans where they are. It's unseasonably warm here too, and we really need some more snow ...
West, I'm coming down there next month, but your snow and weather reports are not making me happy!! I want blue skies, warm temperatures, and a foot of that fluffy stuff just like I had last time, please and thanks ...

wow! what a great day, a little rain/snow around 10am then just snow
about 11am on, just a lite dump, but at this point any is good. the
groomers were fantastic on the frontside, stayed on chair 2 mostly cause
the fog started to creep down from the early morning. great carving snow,
i'm still taking it easy, but pushing it here and there and felt really good.

well... seems like spring has sprung. today it was very humid and the fog
was very thick even down to chair 6, but there were pockets of clear
spots moving about. the snow was very wet and hardpacked with some
loose stuff, pretty crappy conditions. this is one of the busier weekends.
last night i went out to see tony furtado play at the northern and left
about 1am and it was raining, not even icey rain, just rain. i am going to
call it the worst season ever!!! so now maybe it proves me wrong.

i knew it was going to be a crappy day and it was, wet heavy snow,
thick fog, just like saturday. i was at work sunday and looking at the
big it was clear all day. i'm coming down with a cold and probably will
not go tomorrow. today i rode with "new dave" (notarealname) he is
progressing well. he's been putting in the time which is good. as for me
i am getting discouraged with the quality of the snow conditions.

thanks to cooler air from the north and a little dusting yesterday,
todays bluebird day and good grooming was great! still crowded with
lots of canadians on holiday and the weekend warriors. i think the
canadians leave tomorrow and we will have our mountain back.
had a blast today! stayed on chair 2 all day cause chair 1 was full
till the end of the gates. on my last run a girl says, your having
too much fun and yes i was. rode my rsfp167 from 9:30 till 1pm...

Yes, it was friggin' awesome today. Sunny blue sky and cold temps made for great carving that lasted all day. Did a lot of Bowl, Larch, Corkscrew, but everything was holding up pretty well. Did 50,000+ of alpine today and there was still smooth hardpack on Slalom on through night skiing. Tomorrow looks like a repeat... WhooYaaa!

it was one of the better days for me. bluebird skies smooth buffed out
groomers and very carvable snow. the cool temps during the evenings
helped the snow stay drier. stayed mostly on chair 2 and did three runs
on tony matt which was great, did not see the regular trenches. we got
our mountain back and it was pretty quiet today. rode my 178 speed

Arron, we were over on the Bowl, Larch, Corkscrew circuit in the afternoon, 1:30 - 4:00 PM. Rick, Rob, Mario, and myself. Stayed really firm and fast all day.
Another perk of riding Big Mtn on a bluebird day is the chance that a Big Mtn Photo photographer will just happen to snaps some picks on the run your trenching. She came to the bowl about quarter to 3:00 while we were still sessioning it.

it was really warm at 3:30pm and the snow condition was spring
slush. it was very very wet-n-heavy and as the piles of slush

well... kinda felt like the last day of the season. very wet heavy snow
and at the bottom the new snow felt like sticky glue that makes you
want to do an endo over the nose. the slush piles made it bumpy, the
backside was alittle better, but still it was wet-n-heavy. i think its over
and i'm ok with it, it was a f#*$ed up season for me with the concussion
and the spring like conditions all season. had a great powder day early
on and that was it and i miss the best week when the bmes was on.

errr... it's not that fun anymore, gotta find the the good snow
based on time of day. early morning is too hard so hit the backside
which is holding up, then go to the frontside when it softens up,
get your few good runs then its too soft and its spring slush.
theres still 5 more weeks so lets cross our fingers and hope for a miracle!

it was a high overcast day so good visibility and it helped the snow
stay cool. the frontside was ice sheets all day and the backside was
still holding up well. so make a few runs on the backside then go to
the frontside to see if it softend up, but it stayed firm all day. might
be good tomorrow if the ice sheets get ground up by the groomers.
hope the temps stay cool overnight. rode all day to work on my vert

took the day off to ride the spring slush... in was good carving snow
on the backside in the early morning. made some pencil thin carves
on silvertip, but the backside is the backside, mellow blues more like
green runs, still, it held a good carve. at this point you find what
you can. it was high overcast till 12pm then the sun came out and
all hell broke loose, spring slush, if this keeps up it will end soon.
i'm putting my boards away and will ride my rock board with softies
from here on out. it's done and theres one more month left. spring
slush has a surfy feel and is kinda fun in a pathetic kinda way.

The way things are shaping up here, I might have to bust the mountain bike out this weekend. I hear the trails around Canmore are already clear and riding well. In the first week of March.:( There's been no significant snow here since before I left for Vancouver.
Kinda finding it hard to motivate myself to drive six hours to ride on crap.
Let's see what the next couple of weeks brings. I could always be talked into coming down for closing weekend, pond skimming and some beers in the sun...

Not unless you get out before 10 am and run studs.
The only snow left is ON the trails.
You might try Prospector in Exshaw, otherwise, we're still a few weeks out, but we'll get a big dump before then...

Hiuh. The guys from work did Benchlands last night, and said it was stellar. Snow on the trails still, but hardpacked and grippy enough to ride without studs.
Might haul the beast out anyway ... most of Fish Creek is thawed. Might still be muddy in the trees, but mud washes off...

rode the spring slush and had a blast! it was a hot bluebird day as was
yesterday. took it easy in the morning cause its hard ice sheets, but it
did not take long for it to soften up. it was pretty busy today, i think
everyone is getting their last licks in before its over, dont know how long
this will keep up. there was a brewfest in the village with some local
flavors, all to support the snowbus. it was an easy investment as i am
a rider on the bus. there was a couple of good bands and a good turn out.
standing in the sun it felt like 60 degrees, felt great, but i'm sad that
the season is ending so soon. rode my amp5 with softies from 9:30am

thought it was going to be concrete ice sheets, but it was pretty good.
made a few runs on chair 2 then headed to the backside which is holding
up well. i rode my fp157 thinking i was just going to putt around and wait
for the slush. the sun was out for a little while then the clouds came over
and kept things cool, looks like it was snowing here and there and we had
a very very light sprinkle of tiny snow over the big. the snow on the
backside was very carvable and had a blast on the fp157 doing the
cross-under on the easy pitch, had a great workout. rode my fp157 from
10am till 3pm...

woke up to an inch of white stuff here in town. the big had almost three
inches of new. brought the wrong board but still had some fun. it was
snowing teeny tiny snow/ice all day. the frontside got groomed first and
was icey groom under the new snow and got bumped up pretty quick.
the backside had some of the fresh groomed down with a little new snow
on top so did not get bumped up to much. i will take the day off tomorrow
should be some soft groomers. hope it doesnt snow too much over night.
forcast is snow/showers till thursday night then 50 plus on friday and more
warm weather. the days are numbered and have to get what you can.

took the day off and it was worth it! nice groomers with a little fresh
on top. the new snow was light and dry in the morning, but got wet
by 11am. started on chair 2 and stayed there cause it was so good.
met up with notarealname and rick and had a great day riding with them.
the sun was trying to peak thru, but it was mostly cloudy, visibility was
good. forcast is 50 degrees on friday but the radar looks like some cool
stuff is moving in. theres still 3 more weeks, lets hope for more snow.

Since Wes was not on the mountain today, I thought I would fill in. Spent the day on Chair 2 from 9:30 till about 2:00pm. From early on the snow was really nice and there was no problem carving deep trenches from top to bottom. Add to that the minimal numbers or skiers or other traffic and it was a most stellar day. It warmed up and the sun came out around 11 but that only made it better. Rick joined me for a slew of runs and we were both carving it up in the sun. Had to resort to some race wax as we were getting seriously slowed down by the warm slush, but that was good for me as I was finally able to get some traction on my heelside turns which was a huge relief. Conditions kept holding up and I only stopped cause my muscles were totally worn out. Rick took off to the top, but didn't hear from him how the conditions were. Rode my new to me Nidecker Tornado 173 all day. Very happy with it. One of the lifties is going to start carving next week, hope the snow holds up for him. Going up again early tomorrow, as I think it is going to be another awesome day.

huge puffy clouds that passed thru all day, one minute sunshine next
minute light sprinkle of snow. cloud cover was higher than the big so
visibility was good all day. snow condition on most of the mountain
was polished ice, great for sliding around and pretty hard to dig in a
solid carve. it did not get too warm today and that is a good thing,
kept the snow firm. about 2pm the lower part near the village got a
little slushy. so sliding around most of the day was not hard on the legs
so i stayed all day. rode my fp157 from 9:30am till 4pm...

started sunny than high overcast than sunny. icey in the morning
than slush in the afternoon. riding chair 2, toni matt, the backside,
just go and find where the snow is carveable. got pretty warm by
the afternoon. so from the summit i go up to chair 5 and get about
3 or 4 turns of untracked groom on the front. i did four runs from
there and on my last run of the day i clipped a skier. as i was turning
toeside this skier was traversing across the top and he was coming
straight towards me so i dive toeside into the hill and ran over the
right side of his boots, was not going fast, but he fell over and popped
out of both his ski's. he and i was not hurt, but still a little shaken.
he took off and skied away and he looked fine so everything ok.

waiting for the frontside to warm up, it was sunny in the morning then
slowly high overcast builds then clouds in the late afternoon. it was
very warm today, got up to 50 drgrees in the village. there were some
spots in the runs that were a few inches till dirt, i dont think it will make
it till the end of the season. had a great day and pushed it here and
there when the snow softened up just right. rode my fp157 from 9:30

i could have so much fun with the crappy conditions. made some nice

Anyone else thinking of joining?
The weather is not currently showing nice warm sunny conditions for Pond Skimming.... burrr....
So West... How are the conditions really? Rocks? Dirt spots? Is it safe to ride metal without major risk of damage to boards? Johnasmo said he has only been riding old glass boards thus saving the metal... What's the scoop...

it was a very wet soggy foggy mess. the humid factor was all the way up.
it was raining in the early morning at the bottom, snow from the middle to
the top. snowed really hard around 10:30am then nothing. the wind blew
from the south so going up chair 1 did not feel windy, but the trees were
dancing, had a good wind all day. i was soaked and was a little cold. it
was my most miserable day of the season. i dont think the snow set-up
last night, it was pretty soft in the morning. i was on my fp157 and not
a scratch on the bottom, but i was lucky cause there are rocks and twigs
everywhere, riding over places that are an inch of ice than dirt on the
frontside. the backside is still holding up well.

started mostly sunny in the early morning with cooler temps, then big
puffy clouds rolled in and out. some sun some snow, kept things cool

bottom was icey. just hung out to work on my vertical, today is my
50th day and i think i made it over a million. anyways, after lunch i
was thinking i was happy i did it and was going to make a few more
runs so i was crossing the bottom of hellroaring chalet to get to chair 1
and did not see a lady coming down. i looked up and saw a guy in front
so i was focused on him and by the time i saw the lady she was on me.
i stopped and we collided, it was like two linemen in football, she was ok.
i was shaken, but still made a few more runs after that. totally f#$%ed

Hope you're not bruised too badly. I've got a pretty sore hand from a slam I took yesterday. No collision, just a smack down as I exited the trees off Goat Haunt and dug the nose and toe edge in the last foot or so of soft snow off the run and immediately slammed myself into the hard pack of the run. Ough. Bent the chin guard of my POC -- guess that saved my chin.
Anyway, that's not why I'm posting. I'm posting to lament that the Ghee has 27 inches of fresh in the last 7 days, and the Big has had only 7 inches of wet (now frozen) slush. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend, but I apologize in advance for the conditions that will greet you. If I didn't have visitors (brother-in-law, nephew) that need to be dropped at the airport on Sunday, I think I'd blow this Popsicle stand and head south.

I'm leaving early Thursday morning, so if you are coming here for the end of the season weekend let me know TODAY so I can leave them at your hotel or if you know one of the locals I will try to hook up with them and they can try and get them to you.

Wow, hope you guys are healing up!
So the Grand Foggy really has nothing worthwhile going on. :eplus2: The roads up there are just snow covered ice skating, and the Ghee totally misreported conditions today. :angryfire The report said 2" of fresh, with grooming yesterday & today on Joe's Bowl, Williamson & Wild Turkey. So up I went with 3 carving boards - wanting to try out the glass boards that have been in dry dock since the Coiler arrived. But I could find little evidence of grooming.... under the 4"+ of fresh snow. :) Well actually, I never even found Wild Turkey. The fog was so thick off the top that I got lost, fell off the edge of the world and ended up having a suprisingly fun run in the Eastwoods territory - I don't know if I did The Good or The Bad, but at least it wasn't all that ugly! :o I had started on the Coiler - the little Stubette proved to be a pretty good ride in steep treed fluffy/chunky bumps. :1luvu:
But the carving conditions completely sucked. :( Looking forward to carving on some proper ice/twigs/frozen mush at the Big! Woohoo! :biggthump

We had a fun day of riding with a full tribe at the WMR.
The gang included:
Johnasmo
AngryRick
West Carvin
Dr.D and son
Sqwall guy
"The New Dave"
BigDogDave
Black Chicken of Death (Two Ravens)
Allee
myself and my son.
Snow was a great mix of spring conditions!
Johnasmo, Squallguy and I entered the pond skimming contest. Below freezing temps and winds were not enough to keep us out.
In the first round Johnasmo dressed in a vintage jetski wet suit decided to swim after about 50+ feet of skimming. Sqwallguy made it gracefully through the 2nd round of skimming to barely fall short of the end of the pond. I made it to the final round, where they had 3 buoys that you had to slalom around. The skimmer who made the buoys and went the furthest was to be the winner. I ended up in 3rd place overall and 1st out of the snowboarders. I chose to ride my trusty Coiler Montucky Race Carve. What can't that board do?
Every one had a great day of riding and will be doing a repeat tomorrow! Thanks you Whitefish gang for letting the Wydaho riders and International Woman of Mystery Allee join you fun!
See you all tomorrow!!

howdy all
today is my last day of riding and it was a fun day. it was great riding
with everyone as dredman mentioned. not the best of conditions, but
i did not think it would hold up this long. 51 days this year and over a
million vert. it was not the best carving conditions all year and my
concussion and a few collisions made it the "worse season ever". took
it easy all year and rode my smaller boards to slow down the pace. did
not get a chance to ride my bigger boards as conditions never got good
plus the fall set me back in my confidence. today was pond skimming,
dredman, sqwallguy and johnasmo entered and congrats to dredman!!!
thanks to everyone who came this year and rode the big, i hope you all
had fun and are making plans to be back here again. have a great
summer and see you all next year...
rode my fp157 from 10am till 4pm...

Just got back to Calgary after a great weekend with the cross border crew. Saturday conditions were marginal, firm to icy on the front, visibility in and out over the day, and cold in the afternoon. The Black Chicken and I got very wet and very cold from our front row seats at the pond skim, and had to go home and hot tub before we were fit for dinner.
Sunday saw much better conditions on Ed's, which was trenched royally by 10.30, and Toni, but the run of the day had to be the first pass down Big Ravine, which put some wide smiles on the faces of the carving crew. Ice had become firm pack with a little bit of snow overnight, and a great time was had by all.
Tech tip of the day - Fintecs do not work well when full of pond skim water, and then frozen overnight.
It was so good to see everyone! I won't wait until closing next year to come down and visit ... as next year is going to be the "best season ever".
<3, and everyone have a great summer.:1luvu:

Thanks everyone for a great weekend. I was worried that the snow would be bad because of all the warm spring weather we had in March, but a drop in temps brought back good carving for the final weekend. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Many thanks to the Whitefish crew for hosting an awesome weekend! :1luvu: Especially appreciate AngryRick for giving us (Allee & me) the early morning tour on Sat, and Ohob and West Carven for hooking us up with ticket vouchers. You guys totally rock! :biggthump
It was also a special treat getting to ride with the SqwallBunny - I've really enjoyed that video from last year, but there's no substitute for the real thing! :1luvu:
Had a bit more of a full-contact weekend than I like. Sincere apologies to NewDave (aka notarealname) and BigDogDave for the close calls. Clearly, my bad. On the plus side, dredman made me pay for my sins with an expertly applied ninja Coiler Love Tap to the head. (Oooh, baby! Give me 179 cm and make it hurt! :p) But lesson learned & no visible scars anywhere, so hopefully we're all good! :o
It was so great to see Allee and get to ride together again! You totally rip, girl! Can't wait to let you school me again on the large radius turns! :D And it was super to meet the Whitefish locals, plus the always fun Wydaho crew! Just an absolutely great weekend - so glad I made the trip up! Targhee's got nothin' on you guys! :biggthump:biggthump:biggthump

And in the final round, dredman and his Coiler Montucky Race Carve showing some serious ninja carving fu in the pond slalom. Indeed, is there anything he can't do on that board?!? :biggthump

Big thanks to the Big Mountain carving crew. Great to meet you all and to ride the Big Mountain. Thanks to dredman for the invite (and a ride back to I.F.), 2 ravens for the trip up--and the love tap--no harm done, johnasmo for a very nice place to stay, and to those providing vouchers. Good to meet Allee. Hope to ride with all of you again next season. AND--my belief has been restored in the Easter Bunny--I saw him--and he rides-- a--a sqwall!!
