reading the section on the site about getting started in carving, there is a description of the technique the "norm". if I am riding softboots now at about 20/12, would I keep those angles or change them to a more "alpine" angle? if I should change them ,what is the recommendation? thanks.

You should only change your angles if they prevent you from tilting the board high up on edge. That is, if you get boot-drag and it prevents you from carving, you should probably change something. If you really don't want to change your angles, you can try some risers like those Palmer devices.

Otherwise, as long as you're not booting out, you should be able to do the norm at any binding angle.

There's nothing wrong with 20/12. There's also nothing wrong with you experimenting with your angles. In my softboot setup on a Burton Johan 163, I'm riding 32/29 and love it. I initially started with 21/15 and slowely increased angles cause it just feels more confortable to me. I rarely ride switch and do 90% of my softboot riding in the backcountry, with only about 10% in the park and pipe, so those angles work really well.

But what works for me may not work for you, so experiment and find what feels better.

Also, I use cant plates on my softboot setup with those angles. 1 degree lift toeside on front foot, and 1 degree lift heelside with 5 degree inward cant on rear foot.

... actuallly, Clark Country fairgrounds in Vancouver. If I can't score a good seat off eBay I'll just show up and buy a lawn seat. Anyone else going?

Ya know, I have to think really hard to decide whether my favorite Canadian export is Rush or Coiler!
