Folks

Soliciting dates for BMES 09. I suggest February 27, March 6 or March 13, before things get too warm. I am hoping to get as many folks out there this year. Conditions have been fairly good except for this past week and this wekend should set it right back up.

I am calling to the following:
JBS
JP1
Glenn and Son
Jaco
Cafer
JTSlalom
Ward
Prentice
Mike T
Nick
Phil

And anyone else who wants to make the trip. Blue is well worth it. For travelers, I'd offer floor space, but my house is full with my dad's place burning down. He has a camper at his place but no heat in it. By next year, I hope he will let me borrow his new place for the annual event.

Please give feedback on what day would be best to get most folks there and if enough I will check to see if we can get any kind of discounts, and maybe put a bug in an ear for a slope.

Hope to get a good turn out

Sunday was the last day I was up and though fairly warm the air was still cool enough to keep it stiff. I didnt get up this week at all due to work and balmy weather, but with the drop in temps headed in tonight and the winds should cool it right down. Winds may wick some of the moisture out, making it cheese shredder like.

For Saturday, suppose to drop to 20* overnight so that mush of this week is going to solidify and hopefully the groomers can get on it b4 its starts to completely refreeze friday night. drops below 32* around 9pm so it could go either way. If it drops below freezing b4 grooming, it may get a stiff lumpy and bumpy but if they do Razor first before it completely freezes they may get a good even layer down, then it will freeze solid. I predict fairly stiff all over with some ridges and potential for uneven groom in the morning and with the raise in temps it may loosen a bit for some nice sticky stuff by late morning. Bring your legs either way and to hell with ski team!!!!!!!!!:AR15firin

Might be able to give an update Friday night.

March 13 would be the best date for me but see what others prefer. I will talk to a few people to see what is best for them. Good Luck. I like the picture you posted.

Hi guys.. I just got in from a day up @ holiday valley (we've all had similar conditions lately.. rain, wind, now temps are dropping ok.). While there were some slushy spots (and small ponds at the bottom of some runs), the snow is firming up VERY nicely and was, by the time I left, some of the best riding had in awhile. f'n great, actually..

Greg, my official reply is, any weekday is good for me, whatever works best for the majority. Observation though is that Friday's do 'tend' to bring in more people & buses than other weekdays. From what I have been told, they will only run both lifts (6-Pak & Quad) on Thursdays and Fridays. (Hinting that Thursdays may be a better day, crowd wise) but understand the logistics of others.
I managed to 'score' some $10 OFF Discount Tickets for BMES that we can distribute to riders interested.

As long as it stays cold, i would say the sooner the better. I "heard" that Monday was unreal and lloks like the temps hovering in the 20'-low 30's this week should hold it tight.

You folks pick the day and I will show up.

I posted a poll, but I think Iam the only one who voted. and I can do most anyday that is chosen, hell even if we pcika couple Fridays, I say the earlier the better, I.e. Feb 27 aand March 6, but it would be nice to all on the same day.

How far are you traveling? I would offer up a couch but its taken by my Dad until his place is rebuilt.

That close to Cleveland, check with Shred Grummer, he may make the trip if you give him a heads up. He might be up for splitting the cost of a room. I could check with the wife on letting some folks shack up, but with 3 kids, and my dad on the couch, displacing them for a night or two may not weigh to well with them.

Let me check with one other source. I'd like to see folks coming in, but my resources are limited in helping folks out for a place to rest the weeary heads.

Bobby Buggs & Others that may be interested: Where is this place??
Technically it is "Blue Mountain Ski Area" in Palmerton, Pa. They have a website with GPS coordinates and directions.
Google says from Hartford, Ct to Palmerton, Pa is 3:55 and 204 miles. 84 W to 209 South, then a couple of back roads.
Do you know cafercr35? Their is a B-52 Bomber scheduled to leave from North Jersey, I've met you both, that would be a fun :D ride for sure!
Hope you can make it (free Evil Sports stickers :biggthump for everyone, all 8 of us ?) if conditions are good I think it will be worth your time.

Bobby Buggs, No overnight accomodations on the hill itself, but plenty close by. I think their website has some listed, If I knew how to post a 'linky thing' I would.
Maybe Chubz can post the link when he gets done 'gouging' up others 'well placed linked carves' :D.

Prentice and Ward have made it out for a couple outings over the years. We may need to rustle their cage.

As far as hotels, this place is a touch remote and is one of the last resorts in the area that has not succumbed to the corporate development, which makes it nice. Still has a mom and pop feel, no condos, hotels, etc, but has a high speed 6 and quad. 20 minutes north of the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, PA).

If you Google danielsville, PA Hotels. some listings will come up. thier address is Palmerton, PA, but Danielsville, is right on the other side of the mountain.

Some of the hotels in the area offer ski and stay. I can check with the mountain to see if they offer any packages, but Ihave also heard that many supermarkets in NJ offer great ticket discounts.

Some less than 5 star hotels are also in Wind Gap, PA. The kind that you may have rented a room for a high school keggar, but its a bed and about 20 minutes from the mountain, if that. If you come in the night b4 and stay in wind gap, there is a cool rock climbing gym right in town that might make for a fun evening.

Let us know. Even if you consider staying an extra day, JBS and I ride every weedend to make the travel worth with an extra day.

JBS and I are trying to make this a good venue each year for eastern PA and it a hill that offers good fun with small crowds on weekdays.

Great day in many respects
Attendance Record (8): Jesse, Joe, Joe, Tony, Dave, Glenn, Mike and Greg
Good grooming, sticky snow, afternoon potatoes were fun and no one on razor.
laughs, ball busting
That thing Mike talk about know the situational awareness of your ding dong and Anal Fissues of something like that.
I heard many compliments, questions, stares and some of the best were waiting for other riders making turns watching heads turn on the lift to see what the hell is that and why are there so many. got to see that from two perspectives, Top of Challenge and waiting over on Razor while you guys came down Challenge.
mike trigger happy on the camera, must have been the 5-hour NRG.
Glenn going in the woods. got pics.
Sun came out in the afternoon
Glenn making it even though he was dead on his feet AND he did RAZOR, nice work.
All that contribute to having a great day at the hill with other HB's.

Some good pics and I will post when I get some time to resize and crop. I was gone 10 hours today so I am sorta on BOL detention, but all well worth it. Next year, a few weeks earlier to ensure good stiff snow. Even though I had penty of days out this season, today took the cake and well worth burning a PTO day from work, thanks for the turn out.

Folks

While we did have 435 pics to choose from, I picked and cropped one of each of us that I thought were good shots. Its seems some chowed up in front of the lense more than others;) Great time and I included one extra shot of THE Mr. Smith , because the smile on his face represented the day for me and I think everyone there.
What was weird taking the shot is that I usually dilute my viewing focus when I look through the lense to try and optimize the framing of the picture, but when I took the shot, his smile beemed into the camera and I said to myself, "Good reason to be smiling!!!"

Also thanks for letting me get some time behind my camera. Ireally enjoy taking photos and it seems Mike does too:biggthump

The remaining shots, I dont know if it would be easier to email or just burn 8 discs with each of your own pics and mail them to you.

I have a ton of pics so I will post when I get some time. My free time to today is converting my old HS football 16mm film to DVD to suprise my teammates at the next get together. time is a commodity at our house and the honey do list has begun and my bindings arent even off the board yet.

there are some good shots considering the lighting we had. this was the first time I really put my camera to the test and I think the snow helps with shutter speed. On of my fav things I have noticed in the pics it the freeze frame of the snow as it comes off the edge of the board. I'll post some other rooster tail shots if i get a chance.

Mike rockin the AM and one of Joe showing how the turn is initiated at the top of the carve (12 oclock) and should continue thru 6 oclock. Some of us spoke on this and I think this shows a good example how the edge is set at the top of the turn and the body TILTS downhill. The pic of me shows another version of it, pre-wash out, but optimal days you can lay carves semi inverted on the hill, not just at the bottom end of the turn.

I have always loved being behind the lense, but back in the day 35mm was just too expensive so I quit. After finding some new subject I loved (carving) it gave me good reason to get back into it, plus besides the camera and lense, its fairly cheap, until you start framing and printing, but even then you can come up with way to keep it cheaper.

I am self indulgent with seeing shots of myself but I also like providing that indulgency for others. I love seeing smiels come to people face when they see a cool pic.

I think I would have preferred being apro photographer than what I do now, so I dip into it from a hobbie standpoint.

Here are some I was messing with. Can you guess what # 3 is?

Folks

Last day JBS and I were out together. Saturday, but I went skiiing sunday and JBS got one last carve day in couple shots from the day, which was great, once it got to 1pm.

I love the first shot that Jesse shot, because it shows the both HS and TS track, wish I had a sequence. It was my last turn to set up for the pic in the next post.

Lets being planning for BMES 2010 and consider two days instead of one, if feasible. a thruisday and Friday.

I hope everyone's summer went well and get the legs ready if you havent been already.

UPS dropped off my new Coiler two weeks ago and I'm really looking forward to riding it.

I'm in for BMES. Anyone here planning to head up to ECES? I've got five guys in my group lined up for it. Should be fun.

Greg and John,
Happy to see everyone turning their thoughts towards snow.
I agree about Blue's season pass price this year. I thought there was no way they would raise it over last year, but was I wrong! I would gladly give up the10% food discount and free tubing if they would know off a few $$$.

Greg I think my legs might have to wait until the season starts. I can not seem to keep out of the water during my free time.

See ya in the ruts....

ECES, I sent my pitch to my wife, she initially winced, but I thiik I can talk here into it. I am looking at 3 days, maybe W-F, stay over T-R. I dont wanna be there for crowds.

Jesse, let me know if that fits your schedule or what were you planning

#3 is a set of boot suspension thru negative light snow.

Just hoping for that cold snap soon.

Next season I hope to be in aboat;)

Greg,
W-F sounds perfect to me, as long as we do not get in too late Tuesday night. Give me a call to discuss details and logistics.....

Here is how I spent my last weekend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DO6U655nCA I pop in about a minute into it, orange playboat, red helmet and blue drytop. Small surf, but still fun.

Jesse, nice Vid, who shot it ? Tohickon's a blast. I tried to get my bro's Condo for the week @ Stratton, but it's already taken :(

Chubz, " Next season I hope to be in aboat " ?? (kayak) Dang, I may have to drag the boat out of the cellar next year.

jp,
Kyle, new cat to the LV club did the video. It is amazing how much smaller and tamer water looks on screen. I did the Brodhead a month ago and had seen the drops on youtube before I paddled it. The 5' drop on youtube looked and felt about 12' as you were actually going over it.

Same here.

I got a taste of that this summer with DH MTB. this rock coming off the top of it felt like dropping off a basketball hoop. Not me in the first pic, but one of the main drops in the course.

This is me, praying as I head into a soup bowl of loose fist size rocks.

Dirt jumps offered the same senssation. Feels like you are 5 feet in the air but you might be 12"

I gotta change my settings to see the video but will give it a look.

Season pass purchased today, GAMEON!!!!

Jesse, Oh yea, like when I started to ski, and went to the top of Challenge for the first time  I think the Tohickon and the Bushkill are two most fun local areas (I always liked creeking, except for the Beaver  better than BIG water). The Shades, Big Sandy, Top Yough are serious fun then comes the 'UPPER'. Drops and falls were my favorite, no skill, no brains, I can handle :freak3:

Were any of you guys riding at Blue Moutain during the '01 - '02 season? I lived in Kunkletown back then and had a pass at Blue because my husband was a snowmaker there that year.... well, at least until he got injured when he rolled a snowmobile down an icy run! I don't remember seeing to many carvers back then.... Trying to remember what I rode then.... maybe still on the Burton Alp... can't remember. Anyway, I taught at Shawnee Moutain for a few years before that and also Camelback for a few. Do any of those places have any carving scene still? I've been in Montana now for 8 years..... had to leave Pennsylvania for bigger mountains and more snow! Hope you guys have a good season there this year. The mountain I'm teaching at now out here opened on November 14th..... I got two days on snow already, but now my car is broke down, so last weekend and this weekend I have to miss

kinpa, I personally was on 'sticks' in 02, and don't ever remember seeing a Carving Board on the hill until around 04, but I'm pretty sure their are a couple of 'local guys' that were riding before that. First Carving Board I remember seeing was at Killington, and that guy was 'KILLIN' it  I knew then and there, I had to try it (and I'm still 'tryin') :freak3:
Blue's a nice local hill, most trails have a lot of character, rollers and off camber turns (unlike Camel) and we have a nice group when we can all get together.

I was instructing at Shawnee Mountain from 1995 to 1999 and we had a pretty good size group (probably at least 10-12) of instructors that were riding hard boots while I was there. Teaching responsibilities kept our riding sessions to first thing in the morning, but back then most of the instructors who were moving up in PSIA were in hard boots. That's just the way it was. Things have changed.... :AR15firin
