The pedals drive the vehicle.

If the whole thing was constructed out of lighter materials, and had faster tyres, I imagine it could get going pretty damn fast. It could even be a cool form of public transport, but you'd probably need a system to ensure that people who pedalled harder were rewarded. Perhaps a power meter for each set of pedals, with your fare determined by some combination of distance travelled and power output?

Would be worthwhile for downhills, not so sure about uphills...
