Me and Sean are developing some graphics for the new DONEK metal boards. At this stage we would like to get some feedback and opinions from everyone here. Hopefully we can get an idea as to what riders expect.
Thanks for the support!!

I like 1 and 2 best for their look but I think cutting off the verbiage is not going to give the board the brand recognition that it deserves. Only those in the know would recognize that as the Donek logo.
So based on that I votes for 4. I chose 4 over 3 because I also don't like it when graphics end up under the bindings.

The whole Eastern culture on skate decks is getting old.
I like 1 and 2. I always like one big logo plastered on a deck.

I think #3 is pretty bad-ass. The closeup on the graphic so it bleeds off the edges feels dynamic. Designs 1 and 2 are nice, clean modern designs, but for me lack a certain grittiness/oomph that I get from #3.
Also, these designs pretty much treat "Metal" as text -- maybe there should be a Metal logo?

1 and 2 looked very generic to me. No offense to the designer. And when you look down on the lift say, all you will see is the EK. ?????

1 or 2 are OK, not great. 3 and 4 look really dumb IMO.
Most board graphics today look like someone printed some graphic on a big printer and glued it to the topsheet. They remind me of car "wraps". I miss the great look of the old F2s or the serious look of the black Renntigers.
Edit: The diamondplate that Ace posted below would be interesting.

None of the above catch my eye in particular to be honest. 1 and 2 are a little too "Xtreme-style" for me...kinda similar to the Prior race graphic, which I also dislike. :(
But, if I had to go with 3 or 4, I'd rather the graphic at the back and the name at the front. Aesthetically, I like "back-loaded" boards rather than front-loaded boards, or failing that graphics between the bindings.
(And I agree with someone else who mentioned it: what's with the absurb practice of placing graphics underneath bindings? Stop it. Stop it. :D

Boardsports are all closely tied. I skateboard, like everyone else in San Diego. You can't say that the two don't rely on the others for influence. Notice how skateboarding is turning more "Gangsta"? It's not a coincidence, it's drawing off what's popular in snowboarding, and it's selling.
Too many decks go for the samurai or shogun look. I look at it and yawn. Not saying 1&2 aren't fairly generic, I'm just sick of the eastern culture on decks.
Also, the first two decks seem relevant to alpine snowboarding. They look racey. (no, not racy, like the Love) Still just not a fan of 3&4
Jack- Lol! I'll never look at Donek the same..

sorry, but 3 & 4 look like the samurai is hanging on to his wang...That's my problem with graphics like that. I had no idea that was supposed to be a samurai. I don't even know what a samurai has to do with snowboards. Give me graphics I can understand, like skulls with flames shooting from the eye sockets, or a guy with a guitar and a chick holding onto his leg. Those make sense.

I'm not sure if you're going for a graphic that people will, for the most part, generally like; if you will only be using 1 of the 4 graphics; just seeing if people like the graphics; which one people like the best; etc. etc. Not too much background given in the OP, and the following philosophy of mine on board graphics may be unsolicited; my apologies if that is the case.
I happen to sort of like the graphic on 3 and 4, and would pick number 4 between those two. However, if I got to pick up a Donek Metal and had the choice between all four, I'd take number 2. (My poll vote goes to 2.)
The way I see it (just personal speculation here), designs like 1 and 2 are ones that everyone will be generally indifferent to and not mind. As for things like 3 and 4 with some kind of theme, many will like it, but for even more people, it will just not be up their alley.
Personally, I've always been disgusted with the appearance of every single board I've owned before I got into alpine boarding because they all had abominably lame graphics that weren't plain (that is, defining this use of the word "plain" as in designs 1 and 2). I feel that if someone really wanted to have graphics, he/she'd pay the extra to provide his/her own topsheet design. As for me, personally, I will probably design (or hire someone to design) a topsheet myself for all new boards I buy in the future.

Chevy 350s with blowers, headers shooting fire...Yeah! And a guy with bloodshot eyes and pointy teeth holding onto a long gearshift with a skull/piston for a knob, and he's stepping on the gas pedal so hard that his foot is busting through the floorboard. THAT is a graphic. Why can't someone put that on a board? Man, that would be a ride. There are only two messages a board's graphics need to convey: 1) Rock on, and 2) Party on.

Most snowsports enthusiasts don't live in SD, no offense Theo. Gangsta snowboarding is for punks too. Hate all that crap. And I could be wrong, but I think the majority of Alpine boarders feel some of that if not all those things.

In all seriousness, I didn't really express what I meant very well. I'll just use my head bonk as an excuse.
What I mean to say is..in my opinion, the ninja/samurai/shogun look is way overused in the skating world, and I really don't want to see it in snowboarding, I'm sick of it. Primarily people ride decks made by Watson Laminates (they are the OEM for loads of brands, including Sector..) down here, I don't know how prevalent skating, especially longboarding, is in Idaho, but I'd assume it's completely different and more of a niche there.

Watson is the most innovative pressing company right now OEMing not just for S9 but companies like Gravity, the Firm and probably the most technologically advanced EarthWing

I like the samurai. I knew what it was and what it meant when I saw it even though the sword part of the image was cropped out of the picture, but that got me thinking... same concept, different theme.
What about a picture of a big ass Scottish Claymore running tip to tail. Maybe with a "Donek" coat of arms in the middle of the board or maybe just on the cross of the Claymore. Maybe with Sean's tartan/plaid as the background. He could even call the metal boards "Donek Claymores" or something.
Extra bonus... if you break wind in the lift line you could excuse yourself by saying "aye, Laddie, I can hear the bag pipes of Scotland calling".
Concept drawing. A real artist would make it look better. ps that's the Pollock tartan.

Of these 4 options, I voted for #2. I like 1 & 2. 2 much better than 1 because I don't like white boards very much. But they are bit too, Prior-esque as already stated. And 3 & 4 just aren't anything that I'd want on my board. I just never got into the Far East/Asian artwork, graphics, tatoos, etc. Guess I'm just not that cultured!
I'd be more into nature type graphics. Something like what was on the Never Summer Premier snowboards of a few years ago. Snow covered mountain peaks laid upon a black or cobalt blue snowobard.
I'm kinda diggin' this graphic that *Ace* found though!

Since you asked, and with respect, none of the above.
The brand recognition of Donek is already well established; why blare it out with #1 and 2 ? Subtle carves slick. Make them lean over, read the fine print and figure out who makes that fine board.
I like the idea of setting up a 'metal' icon. Better than a Samouraï however, something looking like (picture below) is probably better rooted into the collective heritage of our hemisphere:
- Graphic designers beware. The ideas set forth on BOL's thread Vinyl topsheet cover may seal your doom: http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=22462 (http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=22462)

Metallica died when Load came out. The Unforgiven turned them into "your sister's band"
Yes, I was barely alive when all that happened, but it's what I've noticed. I own every album by Metallica, including the new one, but I refused to support Metallica with Saint Anger. No way.

Generally there is 2 way to go to achieve some sort of enduring design!
1. keep-it simple and elegant
or
2. simply outrageous with a lot of personality (ex. mad graphics are unconventional & timeles)

I was going to say #3, but JK's rusty metal look is awesome. I would totally buy a board with that topsheet.

Something like this? No plans for topsheet so far but a teeshirt an hoodie.
Tack two more cylinders on that (although, Ford flatheads had 3 exhaust outputs on the heads, even though they were V8s, and that cat style could be old enough to have a flathead) or not.
Very close. Needs more..
Rat Fink in it..
Perhaps if I ever get a custom board..It will be flat black, with Rat Fink on the end of the nose..

The pipe you see is after the manifold. Itīs an 4 into 1 into 3 system. Itīs pretty much standard when it comes to hotrodding a snowcat! This is an old Pistenbully;-):D

I vote twenty times for the rusted multi metal with the hand hammered rivets.
Sean you just gotta do that one. Reminds me of some of the 150 year old mash vats at the Glenfiddich Distilery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
add a Gard goose or geese logo on it somewhere and it home to the highlands.

I really like JK moscraciun's design on post #59, specifically the first 2. I wonder if Donek or anyone else would like them enough for them to be one of the options

I've e-mailed JK on the rusted rivets. I'm just waiting for a reply from him. Unfortunately it's not really possible to get a metalic look from a dye sublimated pbt print. As a result, I fear that his first two designs would just look half baked. I think they look great though. We'll see what we can do.

Thanks Sean for your input and listening to everyone's input here. If the metallic print can't come out well can it be substituted for another color for the first 2 designs. Maybe a red or silver? I just realized that the design had the donek bird logo (I'm just slow I guess) and I like the design even more. Its very classy and feels modern IMHO.
JK, can you make other variations of your first 2 designs since the metallic pattern may not be possible?

Well silver is a metalic color, so it won't work. It would be possible to put just about anything else there. Flames, solid, fades...

This may not be constructive but I'm still a fan of the old old Donek bird logo and really love plain but tech looking tops. How about a clear top sheet with the carbon sheet showing through and a simple logo?
Of the options so far, I liked 1 and 2 of JK's but it would be nice to get a more full image of the bird as I sort of had to stare at it a while to get the image. Perhaps with the bird in smaller scale or more centered and on the nose, I dunno, guess I'm thinking of the older donek base graphics but slightly morphed.
I'm guessing the bird in JK's design is clear and we would be seeing the carbon sheet below?

I can go one better than that, I only bought it ( for 99 cents) so people wouldn't think I was making it up.

Thank you for showing interest
yes
is good idea to try to change that metallic surface in something that is even more relevant for your brand(since is in the shape of your brand icon), ex.: speed, agility, lightness etc!
I could explore in this direction later on!

I love the rust bucket look, on a big freeride board like a 180 Incline. Both the others are cool too, those three float my boat. The first four either leave me blah, or the "samuri" leave me sick, yeach.

I like the idea of the samurai sword but there needs to be more sword in the image. I like the clean lines of 1 / 2 though. I always liked the image of menacing jagged mountains as graphics in a cold blue scheme.

Sean after talking with you and re-reading this whole thread, From my background in marketing of new engineering i have come to a conclusion.
The Rust Bucket is so unique a concept and has such visual impact even to the snowboard mags and ski mags that only recognize park boarding will be entranced and have to cover it.
The free media coverage of the board and it's relationship to carving folks is something that could not be bought at any price.
All the bums will have pictures and blurbs in all the mags and online stuff just so they are not left behind on showing it.
lots of free publicity for Donek and for our sport.

Yes, we will be offering the original graphics as well as a couple from JK. I received the final artwork for the rust bucket a couple days ago and we will get it posted on the site soon. We also have a version of the carbon fiber print with the bird in flames as we could not produce the metalic finish with this printing process. I expect the images will be up soon.

Sean/Donek,
Thanks for keeps all the 4 options and bringing in JK's work as well. I was worried that only the 2 most popular voted designs would be available. Now that I see you're giving more options I think that alot of people will be satisfied with the designs available.

Options have always been our intention. We wanted to be sure we were on the right track. If some of the graphics got no votes, we would have obviously nixed them.

Anything's possible. Intergrating this into a design as a custom is very easy. Something simple like this is pretty inexpensive as well. Just ask about it when you order.
