View Full Version : Busted Thermoflex???

I've had my Thermoflex liners from two full seasons now (probably 90+ days on them). I noticed this weekend that in one of the liners there's a "crack" in the foam just above my ankle in the rear of the liner. I felt it a bit when I put the boots in walk mode, then I really noticed it when I removed the liners to dry out on Monday afternoon. Does anyone know if I re-bake them will the foam heal itself? I've only molded them once so far. I'm getting new boots in the fall, but I like having these as backups, plus I've got at least another 6-10 days left this season and I'll need them in the summer in Chile. Any thoughts? I can ride them like they are, but its not the best. I'm reluctant to re-bake them unless I know it will work, since I've got lots of extra foam wraps on them in the necessary places (ankle/shin).

Sorry Randy, I don't have an answer to your question, but what are these foam wraps you speak of? Are they something to take up a bit of volume for a shell that is a bit large?

Baka,

Yes, the bootfitter stuck them to the liner to take up extra space and keep my heel down. I use the Raichle liners in UPS boots. The UPS liner must have more volume in the shin area so they needed to take up some space so I wouldn't have to over-tighten the buckles.

Randy,

Sadly your going to need to replace them, if the area that is affected is where we think it is, my bootfitter recommends replacement ( he was over for dinner and we peeked on line).

Have some fun - get some liners and ride off into the sunset.

Randy depending on how bad the crack is you could try the old standby Duct tape and instead of using contact cement (it drys hard) try some silicon it drys soft and is flexible. You wont know till you try besides duct tape and silicon are cheap and if it doesn't work no big loss.

Thanks guys. I suspected as much. I can't repair or glue it since the foam is in between two fabric layers. No big deal. I can nurse them along until the end of the season. I'm getting new boots in the fall anyway.

I did that to a liner (the older Red+Black ones) when I stuffed them into my Softboots (Ski-School bootdryer quit, leaving my softie liners very moist) to do a Park+Pipe lesson with some very aggressive + talented riders.I jumped off a roller, grabbed 'T-Indy' with a nice nose-poke,and felt the liner 'snap' in mid-air. If tweaked just about 2" above the ankle. The fabric was still intact,so I did spot-heating [With a heat-gun:If you do this,be Very Careful of how hot things get!] on that area, and it kinda re-molded(no 'rift',but it flexed at the spot where it got tweaked),and was o.k. in my hardshells. That re-heating didn't hold for very long, kind of a temporary fix. You'll need a new liner eventually, just postponing the inevitable... :(
