View Full Version : Kimo Is Down

Thor VonRippington
May 9th, 2008, 10:04 AM
Kimo is down and could use some good vibes. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor yesterday after experiencing seizures. It's not so big that it's pushing surrounding tissue so that's good. Tomorrow will be surgery for biopsy and possible removal. The thread will be updated with more details as they are received. He is feeling good today but in the Boulder Community Hospital until the situation is resolved. He does have his Blackberry with him and can receive emails.

If you don't know Kimo, he's a solid member of the BOL community... a great guy (Bryan can tell ya) and a very skilled carver.

GET WELL KIMO!!!

Oh boy can I tell you!!!

First, my thoughts are with you and my next phone call goes to my Mom and putty in an urgent request for the "Prayer Chain" she works with.

Second: a little story.

I am laying at home with a recent Tib/Fib fracture and surgery. (Flown home by another BOL Hero) I get up (heavily medicated) to see a number of phone messages.
It is Kimo, he is IN the Aspen airport calling me. When I call him back, he offers to drive my truck all the way back to Portland !!!!!!!!!!!!!:1luvu:
Are you kidding me? WOW! Jumps a bus, goes over to Joey's house, gets the keys and is on his way moments latter. Two days out of his life to drive my truck cross country nearly 1200 miles!! He is one VERY cool dude!! Gracious, intelligent, kind and a fine carver to boot!! Again, another HUGE thanks for coming to my aid when I needed it most.

I wish you the very best outcome. My prayers are with you my friend. Bryan

PS, in the photos, I am the dumpy old fat guy. Kimo is the tall good looking young guy!! :D

Thor gave me a call to see if I was available to stop by the hospital to pass on everyone's good thoughts. He is very appreciative and seems to have a good support system around him.

He goes into surgery tomorrow and by chance I happen to know the neurosurgeon performing the surgery. Kimo will be in excellent hands and I hope I gave him some extra comfort by passing along the Docs reputation.

What we all didn't know and I am happy to report is that Kimo and his fiance - Sherri, were married today. They already had a formal date set for five weeks from now but decided to confirm their love for one another before this very trying time. I had a piece of wedding cake for everyone.

I left them a few minutes ago and gave them my telephone number in case they would like to give us an update. In the meantime, let's all pray for the best.

Hey everybody this is cherie kimos wife. Thank you for all of your support! This thread is over whelming and I am so glad kimo has so many people that love him! Sorry updates are slow but we are both very sleep deprived! Here's the latest. He made it through surgery with just a little speech impediment and slight facial drooping on the right. Those effects very well may subside. He also is only able to read slowly but I will be sure to read this thread to him. They had to leave a notible amount of tumor tissue in bc kimo started slurring and loosing speech when they stimulated that area. It was an awake surgery for those of you who don't know. That way they can more accuratly tell what needs to be left for functional purposes. We spent the night and most of today in the icu but now were back on the nneuro floor. Tomorrow they will evaluate him to see if he needs some time in in patient rehab. If not well go home. I don't think were ready to go home bc he's on all sorts of strong ass meds and has a huge incision on his scalp and I don't feel qualified to assess those types of things! So let's hope they let us stay a little longer! Well I'd love to keep you updated. This blackberry is hard for me to type on so if someone could email me at pollockc08@gmail.com so I can type updates on my pearl and email them for someone to post for me? Thanks again for all the love and support! And curtis it was great to meet you! Oh for those of you who wondered hoow we got married, in co all you have to do is pay for the license and sign it. Hey guys. I've just got to look at you wrote while I have been in the hospital. It really meant a lot to read what wrote. I am getting better for having had a pretty good chunk of my brain removed. The worst is the speech ability, but they didn't take all it. Also writing is hard too. I actually feel like I could riding right now, but I know that will take some time too. It seems I'm improving slowly, but surely. The typing is much better, but I still have a long ways to go on the speaking. It looks I like will probably be out of the hospital Saturday, but I will a lot to do in outpatient care.

I got a good whack on the head years ago in a car accident and had trouble talking for a while after. And for weeks I felt a little weird... tired, not fully aware... like I'd just woken up. Got a little better day by day though and now I are complztely nrmal aggin. Well, mostly.

A friend of mine went through basically the same thing a few years later, only he was really messed up at first, and recovery took longer. Now you'd never know, other than some bumps and scars on his head.

Best of luck with your recovery, Kimo. Expect it to take some time, and (perhaps most importantly) let your friends and family know that it sometimes takes a long while. Nobody told my girlfriend about that, and for a while she was really confused and worried about me. So now I tell these stories to everyone I know when stuff like this happens, because sometimes the doctors don't, or they don't tell this to everyone who needs to hear it.

Wishing you great success!

Kimo, Originally thinking I was going to be released the day of my accident, changed pretty fast when I was told about some of the issues. After the first night of being woke up every hour and having those pump things on my feet expanding and contracting every few seconds, I was happy to just rest and enjoy the oxygen and phentonal (Sp). Not having to get up to pee and pretty good food a phone call away was a real bonus. Three days latter I looked back and was so happy I had not tried to leave on the first day.

No Air Conditioning? That is not acceptable. Can we get a small one installed in your bedroom for now? Let me know if I can help get this done.

Heal fast my friend, you are being covered in well wishes and prayers.

Actually, if I'm moderately carefully with opening the windows at night and closing them during the day, I don't any need a/c.

Hey Kimo,
I am sorry to hear of your predicament and I am relieved to hear that you made it through surgery OK!

Man I would never wish a cranium invasion on anybody. Please let us know if this is milignant or not. It would be easy to understand some non-normal tissue with all the blunt head trauma one enjoys learning this sport. But with brain tumors in the news lately it's a good opportunity for all of us to be thankful, and reflective, for the opportunities we have had, and to donate generously to the American Cancer Society who does help cure Cancer everyday. In any case stay strong and determined, we are all pulling for you!! You are on a deadline remember, you have just about 33 weeks to complete a full recovery, but I'd bet you won't need more than a couple.

I haven't updated in awhile so here goes. Officially, the worst thing that's happened in the past week is my computer going on the fritz. It was always a piece of crap, but it's very rapidly giving up the ghost. I can do limited web browsing, oddly enough, but little else works for me which is immensely frustrating considering how much of my life I run by computer. I've got a new one on order so never fear, I'll get back into the Bomber boards more regularly in a week or so.

They still say no snowboarding so I guess the end of the season is here for me. I feel physically able to ride, but I'm not allowed contact sports. Some business about there still being a hole in my head. Everybody has lots of holes in their heads. I think they're being a little to cautious maybe.

I've been debating whether or not to share with you all the what the pathology report said. Not because I don't want anybody to know, but rather because I think it's important to keep in mind that it doesn't necessarily guarantee one outcome or another. With that said, I will share that it's a

oligoastrocytoma with anaplastic regions grade III.

Boulder happens to have an amazing, nationally recognized neurosurgeon, Dr. Alan Villavincensio, who did my tumor resection. He got most of it, but because part of the tumor was in my speech area, he left did some small amount. I've found a neuro oncologist in Denver, Dr. Ed Arenson, that I feel really good about managing my radiation and, what for it... wait for it... CHEMOtherapy. I should start both in a about a week. Apparently, the drugs and radiation for what I have tend to have very low side effects too so I won't be sick as dog thru the whole process. I'll also get to do most of my treatment in Boulder.

The really bright side is that there is practically no reason to worry about missing SES 09. Maybe by that time I'll even be talking regular too, although the speech is coming back very quickly anyways.

Thor: I'm driving up to Snow Mountain Ranch tomorrow (well, I'm not the one driving) for a wedding. We're coming back Monday. If you're crazy enough to be home and not at the Basin, maybe it work to do lunch Monday or something. email me.

Sorry to be jumping in here so late. However, been watching the post and keeping track of your progress. VERY glad to see all is going well and you are now moving a round. Your attitude during all of this is an example of your strength.

If you are up in the county come on by and pet the dogs and jab with us a bit. Things are slow and we would love to see you.

Kimo, It's been a while since I've been on the site so it was a pretty big shock to hear about your surgery. Great to hear that your surgery went well and life is slowly returning to some sort of normality. Keep healing, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Tom

Are you frick'n kidding me? I just got this message from Kimo...

Hey Stan,
I just got cleared by my surgeon to ride (with a helmet). I intend to be there for the day. Would you please make sure the snow is good.

Just when I thought the season was over and the hibernation begins- I read this!

This is more exciting than a new Kessler on the classifieds.

Kimo (chemo?) Ride strong and ride well, you have no idea how many lurkers are pulling for you!

I try to keep my signal-to-noise ratio in check here but I just can't contain myself this time.

Way to go :biggthump

This is not a test. I really will be there Sunday unless something stupid happens, like my car wheel falling off.

As a side note, I do have 2 pictures of my brain, or what's left of it, that I could post to this thread for any people who didn't believe I had one to begin with. I was just worried that some people wouldn't want to see it. If you do, say so.

cya on the hill.

Bryan - I'll try to get the camera in the hands of someone more "responsible"

Kimo - Funny! The last time we tried to ride together your wheel falling off was a big deal which quickly became a meaningless side-point.
Let's see the brain pics!!

Way to go Kimo! Getting to finish out the season on a good note makes things feel more normal. Have fun and keep it safe with all the goons that will be out this Sunday.

Kimo, RIGHT ON! I rest assured that Stan can show you a good time. Just don't pick up the DT custom from Dustin. Stan seems to disappear when that monster board shows up. He was ducking it at SES 08.
We all know it's harder than you let on, but getting another piece of your life back has to feel really good.
Smoke the hill for us Bro.

Funny story, I just ran into Dustin in Boulder today while I was out doing errands. He said he and Mario were too good to show up at the Basin for the last day. Apparently, they're going mountain biking instead. WTF? I thought these guys were die hard carvers. Somebody needs to :smashfrea into these guys. :D

I have two pics of that general shot, but they pretty much look same. I also asked if they would save a piece of what they took out for my so I could keep in a jar of Scotch just so I could say to people, "This is my brain on Scotch!" They said no to that request so I just have the pictures.

Hi Kimo ....

Well I got to meet your insides ..
before I got to meet your outsides ...

I'm finally up in Hood River for the month of June ..
and trying to improve my Basic Snow Boarding Skills and of course my Carving.... I'll be at Timberline MOST days this month, then hopefully permanently back in Hood River from September onwards. Feel free to come and visit (belated Honeymoon?) anytime after that and stay a night or three or more. (but don't feel too special... as that invite will be open to other carvers as well, once I get back to HR).

Looking forward to meeting you in person and to get to ride with you next season. Hope all is back to normal with your brain soon.

Gavin

Nice brain, Kimo. Too bad they wouldn't let you keep the extra piece. I would have complained more; it's your brain, after all.

I agree.
Still, good to see it's basically in one piece.

I have to tell when I looked at the pic, my six yr old came and peaked over my shoulder.

Immediately she says - Is that someone's brain? Why did they put all those letters in there? What are they spelling in there dad?

Then when I explained a bit. " Oh that's cool. I am glad he is going to be alright." I mentioned the bit about you snowboarding over the weekend.

Hope everything keeps going on the recovery trail.

Now my daughter is rooting for you too.

Kimo

Yes. I had the surgeon put a skylight in instead of the original piece of skull bone. :D

pebu
June 10th, 2008, 08:46 AM
So do you have to put sunscreen on the skylight when you go out on a bright day? I mean, you wouldn't want your brain getting sunburnt.

Kimo
June 10th, 2008, 08:57 AM
Well, that's the real reason my surgeon insisted I wear a helmet... sun protection.

NateW
June 10th, 2008, 09:29 PM
My girlfriend's best friend's brother had a section of skull removed, about the size of a silver dollar. I've forgotten what the operation was about... but anyway, they actually gave him the bone piece to take home. GF said he looked really weird with this section missing from his head.

Punch line: the doctors later put the piece of bone back in.

That is just the weirdest most bizarre thing. It's not surprising to me that they let him have it, but it blows me away that they'd put it back in after letting him (any patient, really) have custody of it. Seems like a recipe for infection?!? I'm told he's doing fine though.

Can you just pour beer directly on it now? Pipe the camelback into your helmet?

Kimo
June 11th, 2008, 09:57 AM
You could, but that would mean I wouldn't get to taste it. I suppose that's an advantage for regular old crap beer, but for the finer beers, such as that superb and outstanding long time favorite of mine, Miller Lite, I require (nay, demand) passage over my tastebuds en route to the old lump of neurons up stairs. Then it's on to the Scotch...

Aspen is open for the weekend... but now that the lifts stopped turning in these parts it really needs to stop snowing. Hopefully we'll be back at it in October.
