I wish I had photos of myself. Somehow whenever I go boardin with my friends, nobody wants to take a run or two off to man the camera. The only pic I have is this one.

Ooooh, what a day!:D

I know it's not carving and I know it's not even an action shot, but still that is one of my favorite pictures.

My buddy, who took the picture, was on groom. It only took me about 20 minutes to get the 20 feet that I was away from the groom/hardpack. Totally worth it though.

Spil,

The trench backdrop was totally by chance. I was trying to get a heel side right in front of my better half (she's great with a camera). So, to get situated for that, I put down a toe side that would get me aiming right at her (probably pretty dumb actually). As it would turn out the angle of her shot, capture the trench.

Thanks for the email.

Kurt,

Thanks buddy. I think Tara and I will need to make Canada next year, or we can meet somewhere half way (SES....).

Beer? I use it when I brush my teeth.

but nothing beats a work in progress... WCS ladies, as of 2 seasons ago i was closer to taming the beast, even on a bad day. i've worked on ceasing to flap my arms and continued the separation of "ze knees." goal on recentering has been helping my riding a lot. also finally succumbing to repairing my knee has allowed for improvement as well. looking forward to a much more productive season this year. winter where are you??

Boardski, AGREE totaly man!

I look through it and I say to myself " a bunch of jaggofds snowboarding (more like jibbing) in places they should not be, and usualy doing stuff that is "NOT RECCOMENDED" for anyone, and it tends to be "pass pulling" sort of antics on any mountain by ski-patrol.

Not to mention they must have a colorblind ghey ape working for the clothing design department for most of these companies..... SERIOUSLY . WHO WEARS THIS S H I T ! >?

gappers?

must be, because atleast in this thread here on BOL, we all look like we know W.T.F. we are doing, and have some corridnated fashion sense!

I only got the subscription (by default) with my USASA membership.

the Mag also "pisses me off" too. I think I'll cancel, and ask for my "refund". Just not sure of the "three dollar value" connotation that they card says........ if all I get is a crappy magazine for 12 months, or 3.00, I think I'll take the 12 months of fire starting material to burn at the lodge fireplace ;)

There are always other options, but just about any solution that's actually good will probably end up being a big time sink. I can only imagine what will be done about the gear reviews section.

two people do euro carves one circle inside the other at the same time. The outside guy holds onto the snowboard of inside guy's, off snow edge.....
be careful when the outside guy holding the edge pushes off the inside guys board to get back up, he will most definitely screw the inside guy real quick, but what a photo it would be. Bill Enos was the inside guy he almost hit a lift tower (very close)... I could never get him to do again for that photo...... <O:p</O:p

Scrutton? It looks more like a nose fold... I wander what happened right after that shot?
Below is our local "boardbender", Dave. Photo by Rod Dorras.

Bro, besides me, there was Dave, Rod and Tony "Cousin", then later Jeff joined in, too.

Yup, I could take your 177 for a spin, but what I'm going to find out that I don't know already? I rode Prior metals 183/19.5 custom, 173/19.5, and 177/23 FatJack - they are all great. I know that 177 is bang on flex for you, as it is a tad stiffer then 173 and you are a tad heavier then me. However, recover soon, then you can take both 173 and 177 for a spin, yourself!

Kimo
February 14th, 2009, 11:39 PM
I was thinking nose fold too. Either that or a catapult.

scrutton
February 15th, 2009, 03:50 AM
Testing my memory now, but yeah as I recall. the nose did fold, then sprung back, and I managed to ride it out. Think I was loading it up quite a bit for that photo.

The nose bend - is that a common phenomenon?

The board was fine, and I still ride it - its my main carving stick.

Second question - now that I have three alpine boards, I just made the discovery yesterday, that the progression in length is directly proportional to the decrease in width. ie. my 190cm board is the skinniest, and my 166cm board is the widest. The Prior (175cm) shown in the photos is bang in the middle.

Is this just a function of getting the similar performance out of a board, you have to have a certain amount of physical material to work with, in terms of providing stiffness and response, or is it perhaps due to short slalom boards working at lower speeds, that maybe you can get away with a fatter board; easier to ride at lower speeds? ie. everything is moving at slower speeds, so you have time to make the wider edge to edge transition.

KingCrimson
February 15th, 2009, 09:25 AM
I think it's ultimately down to the flex pattern and where you are in the turn. If you're in the middle of your hard "drive" through the fall line, that's probably when it will be kinked the most.

Look at Swoards- they almost all kink in the nose.

There's a picture of Jack on a big Donek FC (?) where the nose is WAY up.

There's definitely something aesthetically pleasing about that Prior under Dave's feet. Perfect radial flex.

Really really nice pictures!

Backside edge... I was never able to figure that one out. Don't get me wrong, I can carve on the frontside edge no problem (lay flat on the ground), but to lean really far on the backside edge (lay flat on the ground) while carving, well, no. Maybe someone could give me a couple of hints... And the board I ride is PJ 5.4 (which IMO is capable of doing so, the problem is the test pilot).

The best place to learn EC technique on-line:
http://www.extremecarving.com/index.html

I'm not an expert, but few key words are:
- commitment
- rotation
- timing of flexion/extension

Also, the boards have come long way since your PJ... Although, PJ is probably better choice then some of the supper stiff narrow boards of the area that followed the PJs.
Metal made it easier for everyone, EC included.

Thanks for the tips! Now let's see..

Don't set more than 55 degrees on the front foot. Check!

Set the rear foot 5 to 8 degrees less than the front one. Check!

Set enough stance between the feet and place them in the middle of the contact length. Check!

Avoid any canting pad (set your bindings flat on the board), WRONG! because it harms significantly the correct body movement and edge control. The pad under the heel of the rear foot pushes the chest in counter-rotation position (facing the nose) and reduces the frontside edge grip under this foot (the nose will bite the snow, which causes a beautiful frontside flip!). The lateral canting pads put the knees together and reduce the backside edge grip under the rear foot (the tail will sideslip) and also reduce the movement ability.

So getting rid of the cant plate is needed and is the first step! And all these years I tought the little plastic device was helping me.Furthermore, the board bending during the laid turns already induces a canting under both feet.
Set the same calf canting to both of your boots .

BlueB
February 16th, 2009, 02:56 PM
Well, you need to go by the width of the board and size of your boots, really. I those pics I ride 19.5 wide Prior metal, which dictated 60/55 angles.
Also, I ride 6deg heel lift back and 3deg toe lift forward - this is highly individual.

We better start an EC tips tread before we totally highjacked this tread...
Can one of the mods copy-paste the last few posts into the new tread in the main forum?

I dont wanna thread jack , but what helmet cam do you have? I have been shopping but do onnt know what to go with.

The FCII seems cools becuase its self contained.

Cool pic by the way.

Chubz, it's the GoPro 5 wide. 5mp camera, with a fisheye lens. I got mine at REI with the 20% off coupon. It's $190, so I got it for $152. They're all over ebay for about that price too.

I used the archos 605 in the past, and I'm very stoked on the GoPro. The Archos was way finnicky, and the GoPro just works. I just posted a vid too... check it out. For the money it's a way cool device. It can also be set up to shoot stills every two seconds.

One more with the GoPro, this time on the tail. from behind. It's a screen capture from the video, so it's limited to 368x494, unfortunately.

Bugz.

Can't say I like the way the look, and it seems that the only folks with them down here are MAJOR ski snobs.

Might try a change of solution or contacts even. I have o2 Optix, never have a problem with any drying out of sorts, whether I'm biking, running, skiing, or none of the above!

Huh...maybe it's my contacts. I have Dailies. I've had them dry out sprinting the 100m and had my left one fall out once. Also once when I was on the slopes. I always carry eye drops to moisten them up once or twice a day on the mtn. I'll look into it, thanks King.

KingCrimson is correct, they are made by "BUGZ".
I've always worn glasses and surprisingly, these fit better over my Oakley Square Wire frames than any others I tried, which is the main reason I chose them. They're also lightweight, and don't fog up or scratch easily. They do let some air in at high speeds, but that's mainly due to the frames of my glasses not allowing them to seal perfectly on the sides. You might want to give them a try... :biggthump

Guess I shouldn't have made the snobs down here statement, you're in the OC!

I've found the most useful part of goggles is they catch your contacts when you slam your face into the ground so hard they pop out.

No worries KC, I haven't ridden any SoCal resorts in over 10 years! Just way too crowded now. I'll gladly drive the 5 hours for wide open terrain... :biggthump

You might want to work on that whole 'slamming your face into the ground' problem...
It could be the root-cause of all your contact issues! ;)

I found a pic that I thought was lost to all time !

this is from 2006 and was the first time I had ever really learned how to use the carves technique for racing purposes. I took 3rd place @ Loon MDVC finals that year in softboots ( and 3 strap bindings :p )

I still can't find the best pic to date when I wasnt working for Jiminy one day and was on a borrowed board an a pair of Yellow Head stratos boots. I really would like to find that pic again :( Im always the one behind the camera it seems.

this is what happens when a juvenile (read: a young inkaholic) encounters drifts along the side of a groomer. while he's technically not carving, he is on an alpine board.

http://bomber.smugmug.com/Carving/Freecarve-Gallery-II/carve70/4513874_3dfGJ-S.jpg

while the old inkaholic hasn't done a backflip on plates in a while (notice I only said plates), we still get to see 360's on a near weekly basis.
