View Full Version : Diablo Composites on Order

To all you OES people and others I ordered my Diablo Composites board. It will be the 188 BX but stiffer than the one everyone liked so much at OES, but softer than the stiff one that I rode. The board should be in my hands in about three weeks.

I look forward to giving a report on the new ride, which I would consider will be my all mountain board.

Are you talking about revamping the old Nitro Diablo? Or is this a completly different thing?

and their boards are all mountain rippers that allow you to carve through a variety of conditions with as much aggression as you care to put into it.A bunch of us rode their demos at OES and we were very impressed.

According to Google, "diablo composites" does not exist (other than a couple messages at Bomber).

Clearly you are making this all up. :)

Seeing Abel ride it with softies and those bindings might make you want to go back to straps:)

Abel RIPS!! Big Boy style!! (Abel / in the photos is like 6'-2" or 3?)

Knows his boards, knows his bindings.

The bindings are the old Burton "Torques" which although old are still one of the best "3 Strap" bindings ever made. Power to the toe-side.

That being said. Abel adjust quickly to anything he rides and milks the most out of it.

You might remember the short clip on "FineLineClub" on You Tube. Looks like they have been pulled for some reason. It was Abel cranking on a Sims 197cm Burner at last years OES.

FYI> Abel did post last year with "Diablo Composites" and because he used my laptop the moderators pulled the id. Something about IP addresses being the same as mine violating the "Multiple Id Rules". No worries. Looks like they have got it back.

I don't know how to change the profile. Computers and forums are not my thing. I just learned how to post a picture when I sold a pair of boots. I looked around the other day on how to change profile with no success. That is the gear I first had when I got back into it 2 winters ago, I guess my equipment has progressed somewhat.

Any suggestions please let me know.

I think the only reason that Abel rides softies sometimes is so that he only charges twice as hard as everyone else.

Bob, I think you might have been complimenting the board, rather than dissing on the softies? I know you tear it up on both setups.

For those who are wondering, the 188 got killer reviews from a few boys on plates (Steve P, Shane, Furi, G Quentin, Tool Can), some of which are here (http://www.bomberonline.com/VBulletin/showthread.php?t=20390). There may be a couple more on the OES thread?

yes bryan, I knew exactly what they are. it amazes me how anyone can still ride those and not have them crack and break. Those bindings and most other burton softboot stuff up until the locking back customs would often have the heel hoop break under the load of a large rider on a big board.

I've seen people rip on fritschi, rat traps, vari plates, preston baseless and so on, it does not mean any of them are great bindings

To change your profile:
1. Click on the "User CP" link in the blue menu bar near the top.
2. Click on "Edit Profile" in the "Settings & Options" menu on the left.
3. Scroll down the "Additional Information" box.
4. Hit "Save" button at the bottom.
5. Bingo!

Good to see you on BOL Ab & Eric/ Diablo Composites.
Will check in or give me a call when there is a 188 BX/Am as tested please.You have my info.

Impressions of 188 Diablo BX/AM off slope at first glance are. That is a Big Wide Board!
Mounting up the F2 Intec Ti's and backing off the angles to 50-ish 40-ish and having no Boot over hang with my M29s is good for sure.

Conversation on the ride up between The Builder's and myself consisted of this.
Board seems kinda light for it's size on my foot man.
Reply:Good. That's really good.

No Taco Eh? Well I will probaly skid a few turns and be kinda careful.Might be a little OC so keep an eye out.

Had no need to skid a turn. The 188 was suprisingly intuitive to input imediately.Gaining some momentum and throwing Board to edge revieled a
stable an linear progression in flex.I gave The Diablo BX Creator a look coming around to heel side. Like can I? Got the Nod with a smile.
Upon that the Diablo and I diced across 3 or 4 6-8 inch mounds of, you had better be careful, heel side.Experienced no need for that caution.
The Bx has the torsional minerails (Balls) to slice threw with just enough feed back to let you know that infact it had just cut down the enemy.
Nothing to unsettle a riders Style. Transitions and feel developed into the sensation of riding a 174 w/21 waist with in 8 linked turns.
That sence was compounded and complimented by driving the Diablos edge further.Again a suprising reviel.
Snap off the tail!!! Snap generally reserved for smaller Boards in this segment. Hmmm must be Composite?!?!!?! DUH.

Permma grin had set in long before the run was done.

Guess I passed as I was able to take Diablo BX out for 2 or 3 more runs alone.Cranking down the turns to a tighter radius was not hard work.
Played with transitional edge in air with the help of the Diablo BX snap onto a Toe side and then Heel at a healthy speed that found me in some
real throw you crud.Yes,there was a tense moment there.Gently the Diablo brought me around all set up nice and damp for the next turn.
This was only more encouraging and all runs from that moment where with out question taking this rider to the next level confidently,comfortably.
And yes, that deep dish nose does help the Powder up and away from the riders sight line with ample Pow Pow float.
It is the very same board that was just cranking tight radius turns on the pack with aplume moments earlyer.

The reviews seem to be stacking up the same for the Diablo 188 BX/AM.
Carvers of varying styles and ability have had theses comments.
Big Board rides small, Torsionly correct, Linear Flex, Unshakable, Perfect balance between Damp & Snappy, Very User Friendly.
Yet some how the Diablo 188 BX/AM lets the Carver now it still has endless pools of performance left to be explored.

For your better ride.Just add Diablo.

No Performance enhancers where used for this R&D Test or Review.Nor BTS or even a Non-Fractured Fib Tib.Not a single Luxory.
No Carvers where Physicaly Hurt,mammed or otherwise miss handled during OES 08 testing.

A conversation that I overheard at the OES 2008: Abel was crediting his first alpine snowboarding experience on a race board as one that you (oldsnowboards) loaned him at Mt Hood ~ 10 years ago. Can you confirm this chance meeting?

On a related note: Abel is a crazy fast carver, WOW :eek: My words can not describe my personal awe seeing that guy speed down the mtn. :eplus2: Abel carving in softies in unreal - I have never seen that before :biggthump

Apparently he was radared at 42 mph in MID CARVE. That's about how fast I was radared while pointing it.

I'll tell you a fun story about this sometime.

I can confirm that it was at least 10 years ago. Abel was a young student whose passion for the snow may have caused him a missed a day or two of school ripping around at Timberline. His parents both worked there and I had known his father for some time.
So, maybe not so "Chance" a meeting.

It boggles my mind that sub-10-meter radius is considered acceptable for softbooters who ride fast. So it seems to me that boards like that 161 really ought to be common... But how does the average softbooter (ok, better and faster than average) feel about riding a 161 with a 13m sidecut radius? Do they "get it" or does it just confuse them?

A couple/few years ago, Lib had some sort of write-in contest looking for ideas for their new boards, and I told them to put 12-15m sidecuts on freeride boards. They didn't listen, obviously. :) But I really think that one day, the (softboot) world will realize what they've been missing.

Nate, bigger sidecut on softboot gear is touchy because unlike the average hard booter two softbooters might not tip the board all that high due to a few different things. Ride a tanker 187 in softies and you'll see what I mean.
If I tip the board high I can crank a small turn on it but in softboots unless I have the angles stupid high I boot out so all it realistically does are GS type turns. that is fine but a little unsettling for the average weekend warrior.

lib tech actually is the one company in the mainstream that's even tried to cater to those of us with the big board bug other than rad air which is a MUCH smaller company that actually benefits catering to the niche market.
Lib I have to hand it too in that their boards have gotten much better in the last few years, they have gotten away from some of the things that made them just another company into different and great boards like they were in the beginning.

I am curious to hear about the 188 BX and how it compares to a tanker in both performance and weight...and why no taper in the shape? boards look great and it is really cool to see a new board maker on the market.

lib-tech (i believe) or perhaps it was capita actually did produce freestyle decks with 10m plus side cut radii a season or two back. the idea was that it was less "hooky" on take offs and landings. i miss winter

The board is done, however I have not seen it. I told one of my buddies to ride it first because I have been too busy working to ride it. He said it looks great and rode even better. He told me it was going to be just what I wanted. More to come later.

not to completely change the subject, but while there is talk of lib Tech, I have a question I feel I have to ask, as its been bugging me for some time. I'm guessing some of you have heard of magne-traction. If not, you can go google it. It basically is an edge on the board that is wavy/serrated. Its on some of their boards and though i have never tried it, they claim it adds "more edgehold and control than ever before."

I understand it is so that one can ride a detuned board in the park and still have some control when you arent in the park, but has anyone ever tried carving a board with magne-traction? would it be possible, and maybe actually enhance carving, esp on bad conditions like east coast ice?

This post has been going for quite some time. I got the board at the end of last season and rode it a little. Now I can honestly say I have rode the board in all conditions. This is the do it all. I will say if I only had the ability to own one board to do everything the 188 BX Diablo Composites would be it.

Since the season started at Bachelor I have ridden the board in powder, groomers, crud, etc. The board has handled it all with greatness. In powder it feels like a 192 tanker with more horsepower. On the groomed it carves like most 180cm race boards, and in the crud in far exceeds what I have ridden to date. It feels stable, and the 14.5 matches so much of what I ride. My board is slightly stiffer than the board demoed at OES, but the specs are the same.

Currently Diablo is building me a 196, 20 waist, and 16.5 sidecut, and a carbon topsheet. I am excited to see what it turns out like. I will post a review of that board when it arrives in a few weeks.

I look forward to hearing reviews of others who have ordered the 188 BX.

What kinda cost are we talking about here? I've always been interested in getting a Rad Air Tanker some day down the road (almost grabbed Shred's a while ago before common sense and my bank account brought me back to earth, overcoming his persistence in sending me gorgeous photos :p), and this one definitely seems like a good alternative.

I also agree with whoever it was who commented on the Burton 3-straps. My first Burton was a '95 Amp with Torques, and when I later switched to the Jim Rippey signature I went with the old Burton Mission bindings with the highback "cups" (which gave a poor-man's 3-strap simulation in stiff boots). I'm not a big guy (5'10, 140-170 over that time), but on both bindings I first stretched and then cracked the "highback lock" mechanism in the rear binding (replaced by Burton), and then cracked the heel cups while well out of warranty. And I'm definitely not near as good as that dude in the videos, so wtf.....:D
