I am new to this sport and picked up a burton factory prime board and burton race plates. They came with two cant discs (the big, hard plastic ones). I understand the direction of the back one, but do people use them for the front foot as well? Also, do you position the front one the same way as the back one, or is the front foot cant different? Thanks!

I believe you have the circular R.E.D. cant/lift discs? If so, you can alter the slope of the whole device by rotating the two mating discs with respect to each other. Start out somewhere in the middle of the range.
It is common to use a disc under each foot. Generally speaking, the orientation of the discs on the board should have the rear disc sloping forward, and the front disc sloping back. If you are riding with high angles, like above 57 degrees, you should try setting up the discs for toe lift on the front foot and heel lift on the back foot, with no inward canting. If you are riding lower angles, a little inward canting may help. Realize that you can always experiment.
The whole point of toe/heel lift and canting is to make your stance more natural, so that you can use a wider stance comfortably and with greater mobility. This improves your balance and stability, and therefore improves your carving.
