View Full Version : Stance width

I tried the search function but to no avail. I was wondering how tall people are compared to their stance width.
I am 6'4 and run around 20.25 inches.
I am thinking widening it a bit might help in bumps and trees.
any insight?

i might widen it a bit that seems pretty narrow for your height

I go by the formula of
inseam x .6
My stance width is 19 to 19.5 inches. I'm 5.10, 32" inseam.

I guess I am 21.6 inches.
How did you come up with that formula skategoat?

I go wider with ALOT of heel lift, 34" inseam im using 21.5" which is maxed out on many boards (to 22.5" on a wider freecarve board, that had the inserts to allow it)

5'10", 31" inseam
Carving decks - 19.25 - 19.5", flat or 3 degree toe lift on front, 3 degree heel lift on back, negligible canting
Soft boots - 20 - 21"
Hard boots on powder decks - 20 - 21", 3 degree toe lift in front, flat on back
I tweak my stances as necessary to accomodate for changes in my body and gear.

I think it came from rcrobar, who posts on here occasionally. It seems to work for me and makes a lot more sense than judging stance width on height.

Try more heel lift and a wider stance

If I remember right, he originally posted it with more digits, like 0.612345 or something. :) But a bunch of people (myself included) checked our jeans and our stances, divided, and came up with figures that were all right around 0.6, so there you have it. That's the one true figure, and all who deviate are heathens.

I am 6ft and I typicaly ride a 20.5" stance. I narrow this up to about 20" if the board is on the stiffer side. Adapting the stance slightly due to the caracterisics of the board has been helpful for me.

5ft 9 inches - stance varies from 18.5 inches to 19.5 inches, depending on nthe board and the application.

Same height as you and same stance too. You could widen it with cants if you want...or not. Not sure you have to change anything

I do have Cateks so changing the cants is no problem. I think I might go wider to 21-21.25 or so and check it out.
I see a lot of softbooters with really wide stances and was wondering if it works for them in the park, it should work in the powder and trees.

5'11' 32" inseem,
I like a 22" center center stance , flat flat, and 5-8* of splay, I will go as low as 21" stance if thats all I can get from the inserts.
I ride alot off piste and trees, I find the wider stance helps a great deal.
I have lots of body mass so no problem bending boards,
I do get made fun of by some with my "caveman stance"
I dont care it works for me.

Dave, your post sums up my 22" stance word for word. I am 5'11" - 6' with a 32" inseam. A wider stance has helped my riding with both hard and soft boots, on and off piste.

I'm sure I scooped the .6 guideline for someone on the EC forum, a few guys had different guidelines to help narrow (or widen) things out. Another stance width ratio is your height divided by 3.5.
Here is a link to the 3.5 ratio:

Nothing beats on hill experimenting!

I'm just short of 6', 32" inseam, ride about 19" on plates with 5-10 deg of splay.
Over 20" my game falls appart, especially heel side turns. However, last week I increased my softie setup to over 20" and I improved...
~6.2 proportion you'll find in the Golden Rule, Leonardo's drawings of ideal human proportions, Vitruvio's cannons, etc.
I don't think the height has too much to do with it, more the inseam length and hips width, and shape of your legs/knees. The only height implication is higher CG that might require bigger base to balance.
However, nothing beats the experimenting.

I used to be in the 19's but as I got better I went wider.
One thing...how does it feel landing jumps?

You know you need the big stance when you are a bit light for the board, you know to help bend it.

So after reading this post I widened my stance from 17 to 19.5 inches and wow. I thought I had it pretty good before, but It was so much easier to lay it out on the heel side with the wider stance...I even got taken out by one of my own trenches:biggthump

I went up to 21.25 inches and I loved it today. I kept the same canting but I felt like I wasnt going to fall down all the time. I ate up the wind blown powder in the trees like it was going out of style. I am tempted to go even wider to like 22 and see what it is like.

Ever notice on Burton Factory Primes, they put the inserts at something like 17"? I wonder how many riders have been messed up Burton's idea of stance width.

Yes, that's what I've been riding for at least 10 years, centered on the Burton inserts. That was 16" on my 156 UP and 17" on my 156 Alp. This year I got a Prior 4WD and a Madd 158 and tried up to 19" widths, but I'm still not comfortable with much more than 18". Perhaps I could go wider with some more cant/lift.

What do I get for winning? And to post something actually on topic ( I'll try it once or twice!) I'm about 6'3" 235, and ride about 20ish.
And for the record the little grom has his tools out to "fix daddy's bindings" any time he sees a board, and yes he does climb up there by himself!

I've been slowly widening my stance over the course of the season, as I used to ride an insanely narrow stance. Yesterday I took my biggest jump (not sure how big as I didn't have a tape measure handy and my board is at the office right now), but I definitely felt more stable at speed with the wider stance and it made it easier to correct the tightness/looseness of my turns mid-maneuver. I think I probably went from 17.5 to 19.5. The wider stance definitely feels good. Didn't have to change heel/toe lift/cant settings, though I may add a tiny bit of heel lift. I'm 5'9"

Good info for a guy who learned and stayed at 17.5 on Burton Speed. Will slowly push it out to 19.5 as that would seem good for me at 5'8". Anyone's thoughts on front to back centering as you push out the stance or simply keep it centered on past comfortable offset I've used.
