View Full Version : Oes 2008!

Dates are set for OES 2008!
March 6 - 9, that's Thursday thru Sunday.
I should mention that these dates overlap with the tentative ECES dates. Jack's cool with it. We've never had the same person attend both sessions (at least in the same year) so no big deal. Kinda cool to have two sessions going on at the same time on opposite sides of the country!

Now I know what I'm doing the week of my birthday!(Mar 4) It's cool that two of these shindigs(+Big Mtn in Jan) are within reasonable driving distance in 08. I have dreams about riding that soon-to-be-mine Coiler at these mountains.Hard to believe it's only two months 'til ridable snow!

Early March sounds good, my birthday (March 8th) gives me good reason to join the carving fun.
I just need to get time off approved at work and home...

The OES website (http://www.oregones.com) has been updated with info for 2008. There's a new "news" section. The tentative evening schedule is posted. New this year - a happy hour the evening before the event starts and also one at the end of the event.

Anybody from the SF bay area going? I'm thinking carpool. My explorer would hold 1 more with gear inside. My 184 just fits, hoping I don't have to put the burner on the roof. Actually 2 might fit, depends on how much gear. I have done 3 to Tahoe with all gear inside.

Can any of the locals give us an idea of where to get reasonable lodging. I'm really not looking for expensive resorts, just a comfortable place to hang, hopefully with a hot tub.
Mike T
September 9th, 2007, 12:47 PM
We used to stay at the Riverhouse before we moved here. In addition to a hot tub and reasonable rates, they allow dogs which was the clincher for us. If you are a carnivore their restaurant is supposedly one of the best places to get a steak in town - I'm a seafood and chicken kind of guy so I couldn't tell you.
One thing to be careful of - they seem to have a history of fouling up multi-day tickets when you get them through their discount program. Ask them what happens if your multi-day ticket doesn't work, or if they can issue you a separate ticket each morning.
If you want something close to the mountain, Inn of the 7th mountain is the place to be. A little more expensive though.
Check Bachelor's site as the season gets closer, they always have a list of hotels that have lodging / ticket deals.
Out-of-towners typically get their tickets through a lodging deal or partner program (Costco, GI Joes) since all the locals have season passes and the minimum group discount size is 20... and the partner programs generally give you a ticket for about the same price as the group rate anyway.

+1 for the Riverhouse or the Shilo Inn right next door. Shilo's deal that includes "tickets" isn't as good as it sounds.
Inn of the Seventh Mountain is also a great place to stay too, and a few minutes closer.
I've stayed at all three. 7th Mtn may be a bit nicer, but not all that noticeable. The time savings in the morning is maybe 10 minutes (probably more like 7) over staying at the other two.
I may be able to go this year. We'll see. Not sure if I'd drive up from Bay Area or fly. Depends on a bunch of factors.

The City of Bend has a ton of small motels that are quite reasonable. Between 35-45$ is common. Most are less than a half hour from the mountain.
Easy drive too!!

Just thought I'd mention that OES is most definitely a spouse / significant other-friendly event. The core group includes several carving couples, and there's nothing wrong with bringing someone who skis, rides softies, etc. Can't promise we won't try to get 'em hooked though.
Of course if you're tryin' to get away for a long weekend on your own, it'll be plenty of fun for you as well.

If I can find a SO by then, I'll consider bringing her. In the meantime, Its actually looking like I might be able to do this. Its on the calendar and I currently have no conflicts.
Bend is sort of my limit for how far I'll drive, but driving is probably the best option in terms of bringing the quiver. Plus its not easy to fly into anyplace close.
Jim & Hugh, should we plan to carpool? If I put the roofbox on, we should be able to fit everything. We could get a small suite at the Riverhouse or Shilo Inn and share the costs.

We've set up OES as an Amazon affiliate in order to raise some $ for OES. The money will be put towards the costs of organizing and running the event, including but not limited to
-web site hosting costs
-printed material - business cards, postcards, banners
For those not familiar with e-store affiliate program, it's simple: we put links to Amazon on the OES website, and when someone clicks through from the OES website to Amazon and then buy something, OES gets a small percentage of the purchase as a "referral fee". The buyer pays the same as they would pay if they had navigated directly to Amazon.
So, if you're going to buy something at Amazon anyway, please help the OES cause and go to the OES Amazon affiliate page first:
http://www.oregones.com/amazon.php
Then click through to Amazon from there and go shopping.
All proceeds will be used for OES, if we collect more than we anticipate from the referral program we *will* find a way to use it to enhance the event. We can always reserve a private run!
Thanks :)

For those coming from out of town - you can get 5 tickets for $229 (that's $45.80 a day) from Joe's (formerly GI Joe's).
Linky: http://www.mtbachelor.com/winter/tickets/Joes.html
Daily tickets at Bachelor are $56. We'll do a group rate if we have enough people who are *willing to put down money up front* but in the past there has been almost nobody interested in that... the non-passholders have generally used similar promotions to this one, or gotten a lodging + lift deal. I don't anticipate we'll be able to do a group rate this season either.

I thought this deserved a bump since it's that time of year to be spending money online. I just placed an order at Amazon to help the cause.

Thanks Randy :biggthump
It's about 30 minutes from "in town" to the hill, in good weather, driving conservatively. I'm 5 minutes out of town towards Bachelor and it usually takes me 22 minutes driving "locals speed" (know the road well, and where the cops hang out).
www.oldsnowboards.com
December 12th, 2007, 01:13 PM
Randy, it is a short half hour going the speed limit. It is an easy drive from town, no steep grades or sharp turns to speak off. Getting a room towards the south side of town puts you at around 20 minutes or so.
There are some other handy tid-bits we will meter out soon too. Like where to get "Slopeside" parking and save the hike up to the base area.
Motels I have stayed at are perhaps not as nice as what Steve mentioned but are around 40$ or even less. Don't be afraid to say, "Hey, if I stay 3 nights can you give me a break?" or " What is your COMMERCIAL rate?" and then show them a buiness card you picked up a year ago from a friend :biggthump
I have been fortunate the last few years to stay with generous friends, however, I have been in more than a few seedy motels in Bend over the years:eplus2:

Most of Highway 97 from Weed, CA to Bend is two lane. I've done the drive between Mtn View and Bend twice, and I tend to speed somewhat but not gratuitously, took me 9 hours both times.
Flying from the bay area - there is a direct flight from SFO to Bend (RDM - the airport is actually in Redmond). It's a two hour flight on a 30-seat turbo prop.
Please call ahead to make sure your uber-long Tankers and Tinklers will be accepted as checked baggage, and realize that you do need a car to get around the area and to the mountain.

Ryan,
I absolutely loved my setup. The Axxess was way beyond any of my expectations. I also tinkered with my stance. I changed my width from 20.5 to 19.5, and went from 58F/55R to 58F/50R. I might go back to the 58/55 though and see how it feels. 50 degrees on my rear boot seems to give a little drag.
The 700's couldn't be more comftable, and the TD2 ti si are perfect. What really made my first day though, was having Buell, Rebecca, Etsu and Don there. They are all incredible riders that gave great advice. Don is an amazing instructor. The guy can carve backwards better than most can forwards. I would love to be able to ride like him one day. He taught me the fundamentals I needed to carve, and how to eliminate my bad habits. I will be taking many lessons from him in the future.
Again, let me know when we can get together. You must be excited to get on the Prior. If I don't see you before Mon. have a merry christmas,

There's now a thread over on TahoeCarvers (http://www.tahoecarvers.com/riders/forum/read_TC.php?f=1&i=7489&t=7489) that someone started about ride sharing from California to OES. Probably not a bad idea to coordinate efforts.

23 inches over the past two days, three more feet predicted through the end of the week. Now that's what I'm talking about - time to bring out the good gear! (OK, I did that last Sunday.... but I know where the rocks are...)
This storm should establish the base, all this bodes well for a good OES. Of course if it snows TOO much then my favorite banked turns will be gone!

Hi Mike,
I know you’re stuck at work so I’ll try not to rub it in but...
Woo hooo! Ripped up deep powder yesterday and today! No problem taking out the nice boards now unless you follow me into the trees (remember our joke? Skilled and Stupid = better have your rock board and no fear).
We’re going up again tomorrow and it also sounds like Buell and Rebecca will be there.
Ok, relax and remember... just 3 more days till your extended vacation starts.

Bachelor has gotten 6 feet of snow in the past week. Plenty of base! Think sun and cold for OES which is less than two months away!
Those who have stayed at places other than the Riverhouse, Inn of the 7th mountain, and Shilo Inn, please post your reviews - out-of-towners need tips on where to stay :biggthump

Woohoo! Bachelor will be a whole new mountain when we get back!
The Days Inn (http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=15567&brandInfo=DI) on 97 is pretty much exactly what you'd expect - reasonably clean, quiet, no frills. Their major perks for us were wireless internet and reasonable pet fees. When we stayed there (sometime last season) the cost for a 2 person room was about $55.
Randy T.
January 11th, 2008, 08:40 AM
Okay I went ahead and got a room at the Riverhouse. It's not the cheapest place but it sounds like a good deal for a nice bed, hot tub, indoor and outdoor heated pools and free DSL. Plus I'm splitting the cost with my buddy Russell.
We will be leaving from Reno on Wed. the 5th, riding on Thur, Fri and Sat and then driving home on Sunday.

Folks,
Could I ask everyone who is planning to come to OES to please RSVP for the evening events. The sooner I can get a rough count, the better - so please RSVP sooner rather than later even if your plans are still tentative - for every person that bails, there's usually another who wants in at the last minute.
The tentative schedule is as follows:
Thursday March 6: Cascade Lakes Brewery, banquet room. We need to put down a deposit. Price is expected to be $20-25 a person which covers food and tip, drinks extra, money would be due a week or two in advance via check or paypal.
Friday March 7: Chan's. Price is expected to be about $16 a person which covers food and tip - please bring ***CASH*** the night of. Drinks extra.
Saturday MArch 8: Pizza party at "Chez Mike T." $8 a head should cover it, BYOBooze. If a large number of people RSVP we may change the location.
Sunday March 9: whoever hasn't gone home yet, we're planning to meet up at Deschiutes brewpub.
Please let me know how many are planning to attend which nights by emailing info@oregones.com.

As of today, yes. As of March for the OES, probably not. Rad-Air is sold out of sizes 167, 172, 177 on a global scale. Just sold my last of the NOS 172s and I have one of the 07/08 172s in stock, and if it makes it to then I will definitely push it into the demo fleet. Rad-Air just did inventory so I may be getting some good news if they found some more old boards I can let go of cheap.
I'm hoping to also have a few glimpses of what the future may hold for us....

You shouldn't need 4wd, the road to the mountain is given equal treatment to Hwy 97 which is the main drag through central Oregon... even on weekdays.
I've been glad I have an Outback in cases where it dumps all day and I need to get out of my parking spot quickly but that's about it. Oh, and also those times when I skip shoveling my driveway to get da freshies...
... but you shouldn't need it for OES. Just keep an eye on the forecast and if it looks like 4 days of deep powder you can always change the reservation.

Cascade Lakes brewery doesn't need a deposit, so no need to put down any money in advance. We will have no trouble whatsoever meeting the $300 group minimum even if a bunch of people don't show up.
Snow is holding up well despite the warm temps. This morning was in fact somewhere between firm and bulletproof on the NW and Outback runs as well as Leeway, the groom was still holding up really well when I left at 1:00. (I didn't go over to Skyliner/Sunrise/Summit/Rainbow since that catches early sun and I figured it would slush up...)

Are their going to be people there that are willing to take a free moment to critique riding skills (or lack of) and share info concerning technique and equipment?
Will there be any manufacturers' rep's with boards to demo?

Oh, I suspect with this many hardbooters on the hill, talking shop about technique will be common. There will be at least two real, live instructors among our ranks, and several more of us have been known to toss out a useful hint now and again.
Will there be any manufacturers' rep's with boards to demo?
RJ from ExoticBoards is planning to bring some Tankers (http://www.bomberonline.com/VBulletin/showpost.php?p=179838&postcount=106). 1) Ski check at Sunrise - $2/day.

I'd love to do some racing - obtaining timing equipment, gates and permission to set a course is about a 1 million to 1 longshot at this juncture.
If people don't mind a short walk, they often groom Leeway all the way down to the Red chair even when it is not running. I've seen people set treebranch courses from where Midway and Leeway split to the bottom of Leeway. Sorry, it's the best idea I've got.

Uh oh. C5, I think Timinor has you on age, and he just had best time on course in *4* USASA events this past weekend at Mt Hood Meadows. (Try as I did, he bested me in 4 heats of GS and 4 heats of SL!) Now you HAVE to race!!!!!

Looks like I got the news just in time for the chest thumping and chicken dance taunting.
No reason to go into a race without the top secret prototypes for next season!
So here is what the lineup will be for SGSnowboards:
RACE PRO TEAM 178, Titanal
RACE 185, Titanal
SG JUNIOR RACE 140
SPEED 162
SPEED 173
ALLMOUNTAIN 169
Full RACE 185 Proto
SBX pro team 169 Proto
For those of you looking to drive the Cult, I have a limited edition All-Mountain that was only distributed on the other side of the pond. Same everything except different name and graphics.
I'll be pulling these out of the wrapper at OES so they'll be ready to rock and roll!

Sinecure, I'm not really keen about breaking the prototypes out unless there is a serious racer or enthusiast interested. As you know they're titanal, schtub nose, and double secret probation:cool:, but still only your first born is necessary:biggthump. Especially once I teach him/her how to ship boards.
When I talked with Sigi about last season's run they only reported 1% issue and all were delam or edge issues, not dynamic breaks like titanal boards have been known to do. I'm fine with TD2s on these boards, they have a full topsheet of protection before you get to the metal.
If you're seriously looking, the plastic is coming off!

It's almost time to rock and roll at Mt Bachelor!
First, thanks to all who have RSVP'd for the evening events. This handy dandy Quick Reference (http://www.oregones.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/oes08quickref.pdf) (Thanks Rebecca!) will show you where everything is. Everything, except the Saturday night pizza party at my place - I will distribute directions during the day on Saturday, in order to avoid having to post directions to a party at my place on the Internet for anyone to find :-)
For each of the dinners please bring cash. The guesstimate on cost for each evening for food only:
Thursday - $18 / person
Friday - $16 / person
Saturday - $8 / person
This doesn't include drinks and it could come out to slightly more or less depending on how much we eat.
What about the weather? (http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=pdt&smap=1&textField1=43.977083333333&textField2=-121.69375)
You may be thinking "gee those temps look a little warm". Yep, looks like spring conditions. Please bear in mind that the high temperature doesn't happen till 1 or 2 in the afternoon, the carving in the morning should be excellent. The trend over the past month has been for more sun than is forecast... so please make sure you've got some high-SPF sunscreen. Otherwise you'll wind up with a raccoon-eye tan like I have. You may also look at this: "Saturday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42." and wonder if it's going to rain. It could happen, but I'm certainly not counting on it... Mt Bachelor often gets snow with temps well above freezing... as is common in drier areas when the temperature a few hundred feet off the surface is cooler than at the surface. And remember, the daily high temp usually happens just after your legs are done for the day!
Other logistical notes:
The groomed runs on the east side of the mountain, which is where we meet up every morning, almost never get icy even in freeze/thaw cycles, since the grooming is done right before opening. The runs on the west side of the mountain, particularly those off of the Outback and Northwest chairs, will most likely be quite firm.
For sunny afternoons (which could be all of them - like I said, we've seen a lot of sun even when NWS says clouds) please bring something that you feel comfortable freeriding off-piste in spring conditions. We've seen some good corn snow off the east side of the summit, and chances are there will be some hiking to the cirque going on as well.
It sounds like there will be a number of riders out for "Day Zero" - Wednesday the 5th. I'll be at Sunrise early to greet anyone who wants to start a day in advance. The weather looks like it will be great!
For intra-day meetups, just meet near the big trail map sign in the Sunrise base area. Chances are anyone you see with plate bindings is participating in OES.
I've requested that Flying Dutchman and Boomerang be slotted high in the grooming rotation, so check out those runs. Boomerang probably the steepest pitch that gets groomed wide on the hill, and is off the Outback chair. It will probably be quite firm, so bring those metal decks and Madds! Flying Dutchman is off the Rainbow chair, and is the best bet for small groups that want to hook up and form large groups around mid-day.
Bonnie and I will be doing some videography, most likely on:
Beverly Hills if groomed well (Summit chair)
Upper Chipper (Skyliner)
Upper Carnival (Rainbow)
Flying Dutchman (Rainbow)
For videography, it helps keep things moving if people form small groups and spread out.
I will try to get to the mountain about half hour before opening each day. For those who don't know me, I'm easy to spot: black helmet, jacket and snowpants, white Deeluxe "disco shoes", or find me early at my red Outback XT in the Sunrise lot.
Have fun and be safe - see you soon!

I betcha we see at least some sun on all 4 days. The NWS forecast tends to show wetter predictions than actually happen for Bachelor. The Weather Channel forecast for Bachelor is completely worthless. Don't even bother looking at it!
Those who attended last year will remember the forecast looking pretty rotten - rain all 4 days. We wound up with late-afternoon rain the 1st two days, then mostly sunny for day 3 and 4. Only those who were still riding at 2:30 on day 1 and 2 had to deal with crappy weather. (Those riding late on day 4 were riding in Tshirts... it got WARM!)
This year's forecast looks MUCH better!

Another stellar quote:" Even better than I hoped for!"
Great start to an excellent session.

PS, I heard the "Surf Talk" was big today on the chair's, know doubt another positive side effect of the "Southern Brotherhoods" influence on this years SES.

Idea.:smashfrea Perhaps a few alpine riders could meet in front of one of the webcams (sunrise lodge looks to be handy) and give BOL "Watchers" a "Salute" ??
Just a thought.
Just give us a rough time frame, cam updates every 5 minutes. Call me and I can "Capture" the frame for those who can't be online.

Thanks to the large number of carvers who showed up for Unofficial Day Zero! There were some soft spots to be sure and some amusing nearly-painful wipeouts, including one by Yours Truly which may show up on the vidoes, but all I saw at lunchtime was smiling faces. The stoke from last year seems to have carried over!
Looking forward to Official Day One! Keeping doin' the sun dances!

alright a single pic :) that's all I have Zoom! I was too busy riding my new baby :1luvu:
We are going through the video Allen took right now. Some of it looks amazing...i'll see if I can't post a teaser here in a few mins.
What a great first day! GQuentin and I stayed till 2:30+ today....we just couldn't wipe the stupid grins off our faces and kept looking at each other and saying "just one more?".
It was great seeing everybody today, we had quite a crew. The weather was amazing, the snow was good, and ear to ear grins all day on every face I saw.
Ouch - sorry to hear about the ticket Randy :( You'll have to ask Allen about his tonight over a beer - we got tagged last night as well with one

Awesome pic - thanks! It's fun to run into a dozen hardbooters at the top of the lift.... Hard to believe the session hasn't even started yet!
Get fired up, folks - more blue skies and fresh groom tomorrow!

Looks like another bluebird day!
There's an inversion layer meaning temps are higher at the top of the lifts than at the bottom. Lot's o' grooming, including Boomerang and Downunder off the Outback chair - good places to check out if the east side is too soft.
If you're looking for OESer's on the mountain, please keep the organizers cell phone numbers handy as we've had some technical difficulties with FRS radios. (Numbers avaialable on zoom's Quick Reference sheet which you can print out)
Cascade Lakes Brewery, 6:30 PM, upstairs - please bring cash!!!!

Furi that was a sweet video. The two guys parallel carving together was righteous. Sure wish I was there.
Ya'll be careful over there now ya hear. No more injuries at ESss anywhere.

Thanks to all who carved, drank and ate today!
We have some leftovers from the Cascade Lakes dinner... visit the 2nd floor of the Sunrise lodge tomorrow around lunch time and help yourself to lunch meats and cheese. Time TBD... whenever people feel like eating... probably depends on the weather and how the snow turns out.
Forecast for tomorrow: repeat of today, maybe a bit warmer. Hopefully any clouds stay nice and high so that Summit is open again.
For those interested in seeing the rest of the mountain - we've been pretty concentrated on Sunrise/Rainwbow/Summit - I will lead a tour of the west side of the mountain tomorrow morning. Meet at Sunrise chair as usual and we'll go from there.
Woooohooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

Edit: Logistical issues - I don't have enough ice to keep it all from going bad. These goodies will be avaialble for your munching pleasure on Saturday evening.

Glad to hear you guys have good conditions. I had to cancel due to work. After the week in tahoe and the week at SES (three weeks apart) I was sort of pushing it if I took more time off work. I'll plan a little better next year so I can get up there. After experiencing the stoke at SES, I want to make ALL the ESes.
Hey Bryan, hope you are healing well. Do you still want those torque bindings? If so I will mail them to you and take you up on the lift ticket next year.
RIDE ON Buddies, carve some trenches for me.

Grumble grumble grumble. I hate you all. Have a great time this weekend.

Yet another incredible day. The high overcast kept the runs in good condition, I came off the slopes at 3:20 and there were folks STILL taking laps on Sunrise.
6:30 at Chan's tonite - I will hand out directions to the shindig tomorrow nite there, and have some handy on-hill tomorrow.
Kudos to everyone who helped utterly destroy Thunderbird in *two runs* this morning and then shredded Downunder and Ed's Garden like they've never been shredded before.
Allee, they do have margaritas in the Sunrise bar - I'm sure they don't measure up to Aspen margs but you'll have to come and try them next year anyway :)

Believe me guys, I looked up the cost of the plane fare down there for the weekend ... if I'd known my tax refund was going to be as good as it was, I'd have jumped on a flight. Oh well, such is life.
Quentin, I remember that you ride better after 2 margaritas at lunch :-). Your bully is SOOO cute! Mike, it was a real shame to miss you in Aspen, hopefully we'll cross trenches next season. I'm always a starter for riding at a new hill.
Furi, you can laugh at Quentin, he carves in his sleep (and don't ask how I know that ...)
Y'all are so sweet to me ...:1luvu: Have a trenchin' time tomorrow!!

Pics! Need some Pics! Gangs of hardbooters, trenched out groom. It helps us unfortunate ones feel like we're sort of there. I've still got SES playing in my mind. First time I've seen more than two other carvers. ES stoke cannot be described. It's like being an orphan, then finding out you have a full family thats been looking for you.

Allee - oh no doubt! Quentin is my hero :) I've been following him like he had donuts in his pockets since Wednesday.
And yah he totally carves better after 2 pitchers for lunch
Personally I think its the grilled cheese, but im sure the brew helps :p

Ahhhh! Thanks Zoom, I needed that. Up at Tahoe this weekend doing the "Lone rider" thing again. Actually I ride with Gretchen, but she skis. I'm bummed out about missing OES. I was going to drive so I could bring the quivver. Flying to SES with just two boards, plus skis, plus all the crap was a real pain. But, it won't stop me from doing it next year. Hmm? Maybe box em up and ship them to Stan? He could just throw them in his rack box. Case of PBR for his efforts? Oh, I got the start of a plan here.
Rip some turns for me Rebecca, oh, and pound a couple pints as well.
