JOHN GILMOUR (WILD RIDE)
ATTN Ethan Jerome and those concerned:
About JOHN GILMOUR and his wild ride:
Just back from the hospital in Worcester where our dear friend John has landed himself with a plateau fracture of the right tibia by the knee + torn medial collateral ligament - left lateral collateral ligament + possible right ACL + possible torn rotator cuff + sprained hip (other injuries are pending). This all after taking fourth in the World Championships at Wachusetts riding a telemark snowboard (teleboard). He had just started this newish brand of carving a few days ago. As is the usual case with these sort of things, he was on his "last run," lost lateral stability at a very high speed and turn rate with the resulting potential for centrifugal tree-ward motion - he had some huge Tony Hawk type pads on, so one can only imagine the force of impact.
Wendy Chao and I assisted poor Dawn with the details of installing our fallen comrade through the night. He is, as we write this, at UMass Worcester Medical Center + trust that he will be heading home in a day or so in preparation for multiple surgeries. Good thoughts are appreciated, and offers for babysitting detail will be welcome.
Kind regards,
Alex Scott

John's going to be laid up for a long while.Let's set up something to organize a cool gift from the Carving Community. JG loves high tech toys. Any ideas? Maybe a video edit package since he'll be spending ALOT more time on his computer while rehabbing. The guy is a true champion and has contributed so much to the sport we all love.;) Bob Lawliss and I are riding Wachoo tomorrow and will prob swing by the hospital after the sesh.

So I haven't really quite figured out why people like to telemark ski, it makes sense for x-c, but if you are only going downhill... why is it cool? Similarly why would you want a teleboard? Like what are the drawing points?

First and foremost -
John-
we've never met, but Everything I read and heard is right on. Wishing you the best of luck with surgeries and rehabs, and hope to meet you on the slopes next year...
second:
teleboards:
This is what happens when two get drunk and stoned and say "I'll bet you can't mount tele bindings on a snowboard and ride it"...we all know where that goes. All in all, unlike tele, which evolved from x-c, there is no good reason for it, other than it can be done. It is a great all mountain carving toy, as good in the bumpos and trees as it leaving trenches on groomers. and if you want lift line questions...nothing compares. I've been riding one for about 5 years now, and love it as an alternative toy. this is the first serious injury I've heard of on one. I'm sure that the Fey brothers will be very upset to hear of it...

John, best of luck and speedy recovery pal. We'll miss you at the ECES.
Let's not turn this into a teleboard bashing thread, lest we forget the way we were bashed when snowboards hit the slopes. There's no practical use for a snowboard either.

I have known Gilmour for the better half of 15 years... he is responisble for turning me onto the sport and taught me (and just about anyone withing ear shot) a tremendous amount about the technical side of snowboarding. He has always been a proficient rider (understatement)and a good friend.
John has gotten in wrecks that would ruin a youngerman (should be taken as a hint re: his age)...and lived to tell about it. He is a testament to the words "physical therapy".
John, I am really sorry to hear about your accident. I wish you a full and speedy recovery. Sorry I can not make it to the hospital... I am in Dubai, on my way to the Maldives...
Wish you were here...

John,
Man, so sorry to hear about the injury. Always a drag. My mind races with the thought of John Gilour now in bed with a pen and paper coming up with some crazy ideas on a better skate truck or snowboard or who knows :D
John, get better man and hope to make turns with you soon. It has been way too long.
