OK, well for one, I am interested in trying the "polling" function on the new forum. And two, I have always wondered what the real percent is of Regular to Goofy riders?

So place your vote and lets find out.....

Oh, and with the right diet I am pretty much regular.

Regular, and I'm left-handed.

Ever wonder if there's a correlation between which foot a person puts in front and which hand they write with?

Or is it just me?

Goofy.
Looks like the expected 75/25 split so far.

Funny anecdote: I remember back a number of years ago, taking either a L1 or L2 PSIA snowboard exam. As one of the verbal "technical" questions at the end of the exam, the examiner asked why the split wasn't closer to 50/50. He felt the reason was because outside of the structured and accepted teaching environment,(where most people learned to snowboard at the time) friends taught friends to snowboard. These untrained teachers, were mostly regular footed and taught their goofy footed friends to ride regular as the "right" way to snowboard. I don't think he had much exposure to board sports or even knew that goofy footed was taken from surfing, long before snowboarding came to be.

Regular, but I did try goofy for a day or two in the beginning 'cause it felt natural riding switch. It never worked out so I went back to regular. Now if I could just figure out carving switch.......

Right handed, right foot in front.

So it's normal to be goofy!:p

I am with Nate W.. regular and left handed----- but I golf and bat right handed, throw left handed, volleyball left handed, tennis both, computer mouse right but write left, sure sounds goofy to me but I am not.:D

Goofy, guffi, right-ft-forward, whatever ya wanna call it. I just dunno how anyone can ride "regular" in comfort, and I've always wondered why the correct stance is called Goofy!:p

BTW, I'm right-handed too (notice that the word "gauche" comes from the French for "left.").

Boring: regular and right handed. Sometimes I eat cereal with my left, but that's as wacky as I get.

Anybody else notice that the percentage of goofy riders in women snowboarders is higher? Or is that just a fluke due to my woefully small sample size?

I have always ridden a 'regular' setup, but one of these days I am going to experiment with goofy. Should be entertaining for others, in any case.

Goofy is as Goofy does! If I wrote/batted/golfed, I'd be lefty! But I'm too stupid to write, not talented enough to play baseball and not pompous or bored enough to play golf!

I'm right-handed (and right-footed) in every sport I've ever played, with one small exception - ten-pin bowling. I'm actually right-handed at that too, but I discovered one day that I can do it left-handed just as well as right-handed. Weird, because I am usually completely uncoordinated when it comes to using my left hand.

Anyway, the goofies seem to be catching up in the poll. I think it's rigged.

Left foot forwards for me (and I'm regular, right-handed).

A couple years ago it was really windy at where I ride so only one lift was open and it was the beginner area so being a employee I get free lessons so I got me free rental and set it up goofy and took a lesson and tried to play it off like I could not ride damn I could ride somewhat but things like skating and getting off the lift goofy that sucked so on our second run (on the lift!) I went to my regular stance and put in some mini treches the the guy teaching was like WHAT THE HELL and shortly after I told him what the deal was
I do have to say that was funnest days I had riding that season but very humbleing

eddie
November 8th, 2003, 07:24 PM
I usually ride regular but half way into last season I started to ride switch a lot. I thought it would be funny to switch my bindings around to goofy for a few days. I am not that good at it yet, but my friends that could not ride well were able to keep up with me.

I chanced upon teaching one fellow a few years back who Surfed in the 40's and 50's.He said that all the Locals in Cali then pretty much rode left-foot forward.A few(like him)rode "the other way,right-foot forward. The popular Comicbook Movies of the day were Disney stuff. Those showed the dog,Goofy, surfing with his left paw forward.Hence, the majority of Surfers started calling the right-footers "GOOFY",and the name stuck. I can't say if that origins of it or not,but I haven't found any mention of "Regular" or "Goofy" prior to the 50's.

In the very old days I remember (backhill board time) Burton thought that it was 90/10 regular to goofy.

Maybe that's why they can't make money on race boards ?

I just used the "sliding in socks" test on my daughter, but it was completely inconclusive. She basically alternated between regular and goofy, and seemed equally adept at both.

She had a great time sliding down the hallway though. I finally broke down and told her the point of the test, and she slid a few more times either way, and declared that she didn't care which foot went in front.

Maybe I'll toss a coin.

Baka Dasai, I coast my bike with the pedals level with each other, yet with the left pedal forward. however, I ride goofy, since that's the way I've ridden skateboards all my life, and it only seemed natural to continue that.

Anyone know the origin of "Goofy"? Who coined that word for the right foot stance? Why not, "Right footed" or "Left footed" as compared to "Right handed" and "Left handed"?

Goofy is an old surfing term thought to come from the Disney character Goofy in "Hawaiian Holiday". I grew up surfing and was always 'goofy', but I don't remember ever questioning the term at the time - but then, a mind is a terrible thing to lose if you ever had one...

Regular!

I came from a surfing background - did surfing as a sport at High School and lived near the beach - so I tend more to long sweeping turns than skateboard style/halfpipe.

My wife had never ridden any sort of board (surf/snow or skate) and spent a miserable first day trying to ride regular because "that is what the instructor said to do". With a bit of screwdriver work she enjoyed day two goofy and has not looked back since.

Is it possible to post 2 more options to the poll in another thread>?

Regular rider, Left handed
Goofy rider, Right handed

and also

Goofy rider , Left handed
Regular rider, Right handed.

I'd be curious to see those results.

Surf, skate, snowboard all goofy and I've seen an increasing number of goofy footers in lessons.

plus everyone i've surfed and ridden with are regular so when they get jealous looking at a nice left and know they can't ride it as nice as a right I just go out catch a good one and make them feel even worse. of course when we find a nice peeling right they do the same to me.

Goofy snowboard, righthanded, goofy skateboard...

When I was into karate as the kid, I had left forward fighting guard.

I also noticed slight increase in goofy students at the lessons.

Goofy and right-handed

Goofy Snowboard, Wakeboard, Wakesurf, Skateboard (when I've tried it)

Though after riding switch alot last season I'm starting to think it just doesn't make a difference.

always wondered why the correct foot forward was called goofy

I tried left forward once 25yrs ago on a borrowed board, it was the most awkward struggle down the hill I've ever had. Ended up trying to ride fakie which is tough on old skool "stand on the tail" boards.

Now that I'm proficient switch, I've been considering going wrong foot forward so the board isn't hanging from my MCLless knee on the lift rides.
As I age the soreness from wrapping my front knee around a tree 20yrs ago
is getting worse, so I may convert and join the masses.

How on earth does a duckfooter know which way to go:confused:

And now, filling in for Bobdea until he sees that Dave ESPI has posted here...

Dave you ignorant slut. It is stupid to ask for other options in this poll, and so I'm not surprised it is you asking. Also, you are not 'regular' at anything so stop trying to pass yourself off as such. blah blah blah... yada yada yada.

In previous polls and discussions of regular/ goofy correlations, eye sight and occupations have come up as possible indicators of stance preference. It would be interesting to compare our poll, to one a softboot forum. I'm guessing we have more goofy riders than in snowboarding generally. If that's the case, it would interesting to find the mental, physical, or lifestyle factor that might have influence on stance preference.

I think it depends on your job, for instance Rodney Mullen spent the last 2 years training himself to have no "stance" removing all favoritism from how he skates. as if he needed something else to show the world he is a god among men.

I'm a regular footed skater/surfer/snowboarder but I started life as a lefty and ride a bicycle and roller blade/skate as a goofy (right foot forward).

Right-handed, regular for skating and snowboarding. But for my first season or two on modern equipment, riding switch often felt more natural. I never rode a skateboard switch except for fakies in a halfpipe, so I don't know where this came from.

My daughter is right-handed and goofy. Maybe I should cast a vote for her, too?
