Anyone have any thoughts on the oxygen proton? I'm trying to acquire my first alpine setup, and any thoughts you have on this board would be appreciated.

Jim, here in Southern Cal where the runs are nice and wide the Proton works well for me. I took it up to Tahoe a few weeks ago and the runs at Northstar seemed to be a lttle narrow for the turning radius of the board. Down here in SoCal I think it is great, it holds well on hard surfaces and and feels very stable under foot. Hope this helps

Well, I currently reside in the east, with some very narrow trails nearby. I'm going to be moving to Aspen in June though, so even if I don't have much use for it this season, I'm going to get some great use out of it for the next one. I found one on Ebay for $150, guy says he's used it only a few times. Do you think I should but it, or should I wait until next season to purchase?

It would help us to know what length board you are contemplating. In the 160's the board would almost be too short for out west stuff, but perfect for the East. Low to mid (178) 70's would be an ideal board for both coasts, and still not too big to learn on. Into the 180's, well your east coast usage may be limited to early morning weekday runs.
So what length Proton are you looking at?

Well, I was thinking the 168. I only weigh 165, and I was thinking that'd be a good length to start out with. But do I really need to worry about the board being as short as it is to learn on? As it is I can lay out some nice carves on a soft setup, do I really need to worry about the length or should I just jump on in with a longer board?

Jim,
The Oxygen Proton is a great board. A 172 was my primary board for three years. It's damp, very stable and carves great. As far as length, I weigh 165lbs and recently got a Coiler SL 164 and love it. It turns fast and carves great, making it a very fun board. The shorter Oxygen should be similar. The only draw back for me is with the smaller turn radius, I make much more turns which tires me out more. I guess that's also a good thing - gotta love that

I weigh about 160lbs, ride the OP 168 GS, most of the time at "Huntah", NY.
