however, i've been out on my HBs and plates a few times this season, and i now know what everyone is talking about.

I had some amazing cord porn this morning, and I was the partner :1luvu: . My camera won't be back for about another week or so though. I'll be participating in more cord pornography tomorrow, thursday, and friday as well. I may borrow someone elses camera for a day or two so I can post pictures. I know I know, I'm being cruel.

We're actually quite light here as well, but the ski area has done a great job of grooming the few 8-10" dumps we had and temperatures have cooperated. Monarch base is around 10,200' I think, which helps.

Attitash is closed. Today was supposed to be free day up there...and they had no snow. Seriously, like Gecko said, last week looked sooooo promising, and this week was a huge letdown. I was up on top of the Kanc last night watching the Aroura...on December 14th...in a sweater. And I wasn't cold. I think it's because we abandoned Ullr this week to go skiing. He is the god of snow afterall. If he's not happy, then it won't snow  . Or something like that anyway. I got some Northern Lights porn if you want to see that.

They're gonna be glowing even better tonight than last night, but it's TOTALLY overcast. Oh, and I came back down to southern NH earlier today so I won't be able to see **** through the city glow that is everywhere. Oh how I hate it here :barf: . I'll scan some of the pictures from last night later and throw them up here. We're getting them retouched as we speak (NEVER trust your photos to RiteAid), so when we get them back tomorrow they should look MUCH better.
Justin A.
December 15th, 2006, 02:40 PM
One of my money shots from last night. It looks awful, I know. Our scanner face is all scratched and this is raw, unprocessed from RiteAid . When we get the processed ones back from the lab tomorrow I'll put some of those up.
It's also awful because it was my first ever attempt at shooting the Aurora, and I was doing it with 800 speed film (I was planning on shooting some riding during the day, but the snow sucked) on a 1970s vintage Yashika 35mm. Ahhh, the glory of highspeed film in low light. Next time I think I'll break out that can of KodaChrome 64 I've been saving :biggthump .

Yeah, I hate to stick it to the East-coast people, but one downside of all the snow we're getting is that a lot of runs are too soft and/or get chopped up far too easily.
I went to Marmot Basin in Jasper this past Friday with only my Prior WCR and it was frankly the wrong move. They'd had 36 cm in the past 4 days or something, but I guess their groomers weren't keeping up too well – I had to stick to about 4 runs, because the rest of the groomed stuff up top was just too soft to be any fun. After a few embarrassing times submarining halfway into the cord, I gave up and stayed with the tried-and-true.
Of course, then I somehow how broke the board, which Prior is partly charging me for...but that's another story. :angryfire

Dave, the snow grooming machines lay down a nice 1-1.5" from valley to peak. The corduroy is also spec'd to have no more than a 45* angle to it. There is a guy measuring with a protractor, if you get there early enough you can see him out on the slopes. We are particular about our corduroy out here, being that there are so many carvers located out here in SoCal.
Jack, yes there is definitely room for a 205 or longer on this run, this is the last pitch before you jump back on the lifts, it is called Widowmaker. The entire run is known as Miracle Mile. It is located at Snow Summit in the San Bernardino Mountains. Above that first ridge is plenty of wide open carving runs, you just have to watch for the straightliners.

can't wait till my skills catch up to my gear and get up to par.
then i'll bust out the donek FCI 171. you're definitely welcome to try it out aaron. i have a feeling it'll be a bit stiff for me for a while, some of the guys here are 200 lbs and riding on that thing - by comparison, i'm only 150. hehe
yeah, next year is definitely a season pass to snow summit. i think i'll be spending a lot of the rest of the season at summit too. i only needed 5 days at mt. high to break even, and i'm at 7 days there - 9 total for the season so far. bar any more injuries, i should be able to hit my 30+ day mark assuming the season lasts into mid april and i get to make a few "big" trips.

Sorry but in that first picture in lower right I can see where the groomer picked up the tiller and towards the middle of the picture is an ugly seam that must be an inch higher than the groom on either side.
And you call that grooming????

Hate to belly ach, but I would silly with giddiness :biggthump to ride cord like that.
At Blue Mountain in PA, its not uncommon to see 3-5" ridges the entire length of the run and that is a ridge at each width of the groomer. It is especially entertaining when you throw in what I have deemed "groomer pockets" (voids of snow) where the groomer just simply didnt fill in the slope. So you go from ridge to pocket. Since the mountain faces north, no sun until mid morning, so you are riding Grasshopper style. Can't see a thing.
Been trying to get pics to show what I mean but the lack of light doesnt afford the opportunity. I think I am going to borrow some pics from this thread and start mailing them to mountain Manager and the groomer shack.
Once in a while they get a good day of cord in, but they bat about .200
Enjoy that stuff, because it makes me grin just looking at it.

Only place I can find cord late in the day is the turrain park. It's the best kept secret on the mountain for us boarders to be able to play in since most skiers have no interest in getting a special pass to go "hit rails and jumps"..... but they for get about all that great open area where the jumps and stuff is not at...... I'm like a kid in a toystore playing with the things that everyone else ignores because theya re not "bells and whistles".... :1luvu:
