The phone company recently made DSL available here in the boonies where I live. I'm on tap to be hooked up, but instead of picking up a DSL modem from Qwest @ $60, I thought I might buy one on Ebay.

3 Questions:

1. Is a DSL modem specific to a carrier (i.e. Qwest, verizon, etc.)?
2. Is any particular type preferable to another?
3. Anything else a newbie should watch out for?

Thanks. 'Preciate any advice you could give.

It depends on the standards that the modem supports and that the provider uses. I think the most common are G.DMT (G.992.1) and G.LITE (G.992.2) or something like that. I am not very familiar with those, but when I googled when I got mine, it's what a checked for. I was lucky to get an Alcatel Speedtouch ethernet DSL modem which the company I work for threw away and I picked up.

But one thing is shure, get an ethernet DSL modem, NOT a USB DSL modem, these are crap and not linux or other non-Windows OS compatible.

If you call Qwest and let them know that you're the squeaky wheel who needs some grease, they will give you the modem for free.
