View Full Version : Wax question - little shiny patches?

Hi everyone,

It's my first try at waxing (and my first post here), and I'm confused about something.

I got a brand new Donek Pilot (my first alpine board), put 3-4 coats of universal wax on it (didn't have any special base prep wax), scraping after about 40min each. Then I put on inch-wide strips of cold temp wax at the edges, scraped that, put on warm temp wax all over, left it for a day, and then scraped, brushed (nylon and brass) and buffed with scotchbrite.

Now it looks good, except for some finger-sized patches that are shinier than other parts, as if they are oil smears. The cross-hatch structure is also less visible on these patches, but they won't go away with any more scraping, aggressive brushing or buffing.

I'm wondering if this is normal, or whether it will affect the ride (the patches are asymmetrical). Or is this an indication that the rest of the board needs more wax? Any ideas?

Thanks,

I tried that hard wax on the edges thing, but it's not worth dealing with the -10 wax. It hardens like plastic. I've thrown the stuff out after picking up the hard wax by mistake and waxing a whole board with it. Thank God I only waxed one board. What a pain to scrap the c**p off and even then I had to keep blending in softer waxes to dilute it.
The practice (or try new ideas) on an old board advise is very sound

do you have a brush? after scraping all the wax off the surface you need to brush the board to get the remaining wax out from the base structure. Tognar or any good snowboard shop sells them. Get the nylon brush for finish work. The brass bristled brush is good for before you wax to clean out any surface dirt and prepare the base to accept wax better.

read all about it: http://www.tognar.com

This happenned to me once.
The issue was that the deck was not "hotscraped" prior
to waxing.
After a deck is structured, it is polluted with the dirty water, base material, and anything else that may be in the solution used to cut your structure.

If Waxed, the imputities are contained in the base and will show thru
you wax.

It is always a good idea to do several hotscrapes prior to waxing a newly ground base.

I was told that shiny patches like that are usually caused by the structure closing up. The wax doesn't absorb into it and this is what causes the shine. But on a new board, that seems pretty unlikely?

I'd try riding it and redoing the wax after a good day on the hill, and seeing if that fixes the problem... (always go with the cheap/easy option first :) ) If not, the next option is a light base grind to reopen the structure.

You could talk to Sean ... I would have thought the factory tune would have taken care of this
